Wait a second... Who's buying all that DLC?

I've got no problem with DLC. I treat it like anything else, if it seems interesting I buy it. Base game with DLC already announced or day 1 DLC available? I don't give a fuck, I treat it to the exact same decision making process. Does the base game look interesting? If so I'll buy it. Worrying about chunks being "cut out" of the main game is just useless.

The same people that say "screw this DLC" are the same ones that buy it Day 1. Kinda like those kids in high school that knew they did good on a test but for some reason felt the need to lie about it. "Oh man that test was so hard. I did bad on it" They get their test back with an A. "I'm just a lucky guesser" Please.

If I had the money to justify it, I'd buy all the DLC I could for the games I have. Unfortunately I don't, so I only buy it here and there if it's worth it.

Like for Destiny, bought the season pass so I could keep playing with my best friend. That in itself made it worth it to me.

OP, you don't understand the dynamics of it on GAF (or any other enthusiast site):

The people against DLC post about it all the time.

The people who buy what they want when they want don't bother posting about it at all.

So you only see one side of the equation.

Plenty of people on GAF buy DLC.

True. The haters are always more vocal. Even as much as some would like to believe so, repetition (an old tool of propaganda) doesn't make something universally true.

Ignoring the 'GAF is a small subsection' remarks....

I buy DLC if I really liked the game and want more content for it, simple as. I tend not to spend money on cosmetic DLC though, such as costume changes etc.

Think the last DLC I bought was one of the weapon packs for Helldivers. Or episode 4 of Game of Thrones if you count that sort of thing.

Bruh. So much sense here.

I buy DLC when I think it's worth it. I also don't have an issue with DLC most if the time, but it depends on the circumstance.

I sometimes buy downloadable items/maps/characters etc, depends on how much I like the game.

- On F2P games that I enjoy playing I tend to buy stuff for the value the game gives me. Last games I spent money on were heroes of the storm, heartstone and pokemon shuffle.
- Bought Left Behind DLC for The Last Of Us on ps3
- mario kart 8 dlc
- the extra fire emblem awakenings missions/challenges

I love DLC when it's good - luckily for me there's plenty of good DLC out there. I don't see the point in brushing it all off simply because it's DLC. I mean, Artorias of the Absyss is DLC and that's better than most games of the last gen.

I just pre-ordered the expansion pass for Witcher 3. I want to support good developers and this is the second time I have ever purchased additional content before release in 20 years of playing games (Street Fighter series is the first one) It all depends....

The only DLC I've bought so far was Super Luigi U (basically a new game) and Mario Kart 8 DLC, because it is totally worth it and it was clearly made after they've finished the game.

And I always see a lot of people talking about DLC here on GAF, so clearly a lot of people here buy it.

Rather rarely, on sales, mostly just my collector spirit drives me... But there was BF4 premium which I did buy at full price, and that I did not regret.

"Who's buying the DLC?"

You ask the question as if people on here have integrity and when they complain about something it's because they dislike the concept, but really it's because they don't like the game/company involved.

When people bitch about DLC they are bitching about the game attached to the DLC not the action of making DLC.

I have bought season passes, and I don't regret it. Dark Souls 2 (PC) for example. I only buy season passes for games I love. Love, like I can't get enough of. I have closer to 500 hours played in DS2 alone, and I bought it on Xbox360, PC and then again on PC when "Scholar of the First Sin" edition came out. I have Dark Souls, and I bought PS4 for Bloodborne alone. Well, I have other games on PS4, but Bloodborne was the deciding factor. As you can see, I'm a souls-game fanatic. So I will buy any and all season passes I can get for the souls-games.

So, I will buy the DLC and season passes for games I love. But I don't love 99% of the games, I have played almost 50 hours of Witcher 3 and I will not even consider buying Season Pass before seeing what the end results will be. Witcher 3 is great, but not "I'm in love and will buy anything you put out blindly" -great.

I also buy DLC at sales, with -75% discount.

Srs question.

Loads of people here on GAF are disgusted by day1 DLC, Season Passes, and DLC in general. It's a discussion point in nearly every thread.
Even outside GAF the disgust of DLC is real, look at the Final Bosman for instance.

My question is, how many of you are actually buying it? They keep selling it so it must be working.

I myself have never bought any. Nobody I know IRL buys DLC either? (EU)
So I though maybe it's a US thing? Like pre-order bonusses @ Gamestop etc?

EDIT: always amazes me how GAF jumps so conclusions; Bold text incoming.

I am aware that GAF does not equal the entire gaming community of the world.
That's why I mentioned that even outside of GAF people have this sentiment.
Also, if most of GAF has this feeling its safe to assume that a majority on other gaming boards have the same feeling, and therefor a lot of people have the same feeling about DLC

I can.
If it's something i like which is often.

The thing I don't get is: why buy SP at launch, along with the game? There is 99% of the time no immediate benefit to it. Why not wait, and get it on sale? Major games comes at fall and spring, yet there is a huge SALE every summer and winter and even between, with a little luck just weeks after the release. To me this makes no sense at all.
Last year I got The Evil Within SP -50% few weeks after the launch, yet anything related content came out this year, starting in April...

I'm thinking of buying this too, but at 30 hours gameplay it's more of an old school Expansion to me than modern DLC.

The same reason people want to experience other kinds of entertainment day one, at a premium price. They've waited for the release for a long time, and want to have it ASAP. There's also the danger of getting the story and other details spoiled the longer you wait. It happened to me with ME1+2 and Bioshock.

EDIT: There's also the participation with the community, when you're a partaking in something right from the start. For example, my girlfriend is Adam Lambert fan, and it would be out of the question to wait for the upcoming album to go on sale. Partly because she would feel left out from the community.

I buy heaps of DLC so it's probably me.

I like to extend my enjoyment of the games I love, if there's a problem with that sue me.

I buy DLC I want for games I like enough to want more of, that I know I'll actually get some enjoyment out of and will actually play. Got a handful of games I buy/bought everything for, one to excess (LittleBigPlanet), some games I play are literally vehicles for DLC (Pinball Arcade and Zen Pinball 2), and I've paid more for the extra content on day 1 as recently as Soldner X-2 on Vita... but I just had a good feeling about that one. I don't do it with many games, though, and outside of LBP, I'm not one for costumes and skins at all.

I'll buy DLC if it's cheap enough. Well, the Phoenix Wright DLC wasn't that cheap, but I just had to get it. I also wanted to get the Mario Kart DLC, but I haven't really played the game that much, so I had to pass.

Speaking of DLC in black or white way is not a good approach.
Even DLC announced before release can be good and not possible to be included in the time frame release.

There are good and bad dlcs.
There are good way and bad way to give access to them.
All is a matter of context (and also subjective value)

You do get it, I'm talking Season Pass right? Hell I don't want to miss a long awaited game on day1, but SP that comes into play that much later (like I said weeks or even months after the game release) There is just no reason to have it, literally nothing on day1 and paying full price for it.

Oh, my bad. Somehow took the SP as single player. I agree on the season pass. No reason to pay in advance for upcoming mystery content.

Casuals for the most part. I am sure the Mortal Kombat DLC sold well, even playing a game like TLOU multiplayer you easily see how many people buy microtransaction weapons and shit (so many players have the tactical shotgun...), slowly but surely these companies make a killing from DLC.

I buy DLC pretty often but it's only is I enjoy the original game enough to want a few extras. I know I was a bit dissapointed when I got some (for The Darkness I think) and found no one playing it. i'm a bit cautious now but sometmes i get caught like the storm and enjoy the hell putnof the maps where I only found about 3 people and never met them again :/

I sometimes buy DLC when it's a decent expansion that's developped after the release of the original game AND when the price is right for what you get.

But I can't possibly understand why anyone pays €20 for the Destiny DLC, or buy a €40-50 Season Pass when you don't even know what you're gonna get and if it's any good.

Games with day 1/too much/overpriced DLC are moved to my "buy when there's a GOTY version in Steam Sales" list. I'd rather spend that €20 on a great indie game.
