Took a job last summer whilst I was off from uni. Shifts started at 6am but I had to wake up at 5am to have enough time to get ready. I agree: it completely sucks, though it seems that I literally 'wash away' my tiredness when I step into the shower. By the time it used to reach 6am, I was fresh as a daisy.

As a lecturer I was thinking about getting up at 3:30am, walk to the local gym down the road, do my thing, get back, and prepare material for the upcoming day. Go to work, finish at 5:00pm, go to bed about 8:30pm-9:00pm(?) and rinse and repeat. I tend to stay up late every evening which is not good. I also don't particularly feel energised to plan the next day's activities when I get home every evening after a long day of teaching.

I think it could work...worth a try at least. It will also make me more inclined to go to the gym, and it will be very empty.

I don't know why you think this will work. For most people, getting less than 7 hours of sleep will lead to sleep deprivation. Getting enough sleep is more important that hitting the ghm every day.

Yeah, it blows. I wake up at 4am to go to work. After work I have school so I don't get home until 9:30pm. Thankfully it's only 2 days now that one class got cancelled but it still sucks. I don't usually go to sleep until between 10:30pm and 11pm.

I go to bed at 10, 10:30, try to get up around 4:30 or so, and I can be in my office by 5, 5:30.

I don't mind it because I only go into my office three days a week, and it's nice because I leave at 2 p.m.

I have start getting up at 4:30 for the next month or so. It's not too hard as long as I'm in bed before 11 and bring 22 ounces of strong coffee with me.

I'm pretty sure chronic sleep deprivation is one of the major factors contributing to the diabetes and obesity epidemic.

You could try putting a caffeinated beverage by your alarm- focus on chugging it before you go back to sleep. If you set your alarm at 4, by 5am, you'll feel the caffeine.

Force yourself out of bed. Then go directly to the shower and then insert coffee into the mouth hole when you get out of the shower.

You should be wide awake at this point.

But does that erase the hours of pain and suffering and bitterness that follow?

I get up everyday at around 5:30 AM so I try my best to go to sleep at around 10 PM. If I stay up past 12, then I'm just a wreck come morning.

EDIT: What actually sucks most about this is that 90% of the people I know only seem to do shit late at night, and stay up till 1 or 2 in the morning regularly which means that I have to sacrifice either fun or sleep. And they STILL MANAGE TO FUNCTION EARLY IN THE MORNING. How the fuck is this possible?

I used to have to be at work at 3 AM, that was god awful. After that job it was steady 5 AM for a while. You get use to it, especially if you take advantage of the time to be productive on your days off, you'll start feeling like you wasted your day if you're not up by 8 AM. Finishing all your errands and house cleaning by 10 AM is awesome. If you're at all introverted, early mornings are for you.

Nowadays I wake up around 7AM, but I used to wake up at 5AM for 6 days in the week for a couple of years.
I had the same problem of subconsciously turning off the alarm and continue sleeping, so I had two different alarm clocks and my phone (with three extra alarms toggled itself) all turning on at different times to slowly get me to a waking state, lol

In a way it felt like I had a few extra minutes to sleep in every day :p

I wake up at 3am. Go to the gym for 2 hours
Rest for an hour.
Work from 630am to 4pm
Rest for an hour
Go to college at night.
Sleep
Repeat
Im used to it now

I wake up at 5 am almost every day, because I am so used to it.

The main tip is, as InfiniteBento said, do not go to bed after 10:30. Try to force yourself to be in bed at 10:15 each day.

10:30 pm is the sweet spot. Not too early to miss the adult
XXX
channels on cable not too late to wake up sloggy at 5:00 am.

Me and my wife have recently got into the habit of getting up at 6am and then go for a 30-45 minute run. Since we started this I've felt great all day everyday. I'm generally much more energised and don't feel like I need as much sleep anymore either. 6 hours sleep a night has generally been fine but without the run I always felt like I needed 8+ hours.

Basically, if you are getting up at the early hours of the morning I would recommend doing some cardio if possible. It very much eases the pain and allows you to have more awake hours in the day.

I don't drink coffee either FWIW, never have and I'm 28 now.

Drink about a pint of water before bed. You'll need to lower/increase the amount until you get this right. Eventually when you wake up your first reaction will be im gonna piss myself.

It worked for me in my lazy teen years.

Nowadays the prospect of getting fired gets me out of bed.

Now matter what, I have always found waking up at 5am crappy. Nothing changes the fact that you just don't want to be awake at that hour, even if you have gotten plenty of sleep. I get in bed by 9pm and I'm normally asleep by 9:15-9:30. You do get used to it, and the longer you do it the easier it is to get moving in the morning. Regardless though, still sucks for that first thirty minutes after waking up.

I always found it hard to wake up, and I needed at least 10 hours to feel somewhat rested.

A Doctor told me I was anaemic, and I also needed magneusim to help get oxygen to my body. I started to change my diet and started eating iron, copper, and magneusim rich foods, my sleep is 10 times better now.

Edit: Don't go eating vitamins at random, do a test and see what's needed for YOUR body.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I wish I was still able to wake up early. When I first started working it was great, I showed up at 8:30 every morning (about a half hour before most people show up).

Fast forward to now: I go to bed anywhere between midnight and 3 AM. I wake up at 8:30, and show up around 9:30ish. Somehow nobody seems to be bothered by this either. I'm not the only person showing up at this time though so it kind of works out I guess...

It's definitely hard but it gets easier if you get to bed early and stick to it. Bed by 9:30 and up at 5am. Prepare for a boring ass life lol

I'm up at 05:00 every weekday for work. And I'm lucky if I'm home for before 18:00.

When I was waking up at 5:30 A.M. every weekday I put my alarm on the other side of the room and used that really annoying, loud iPhone ringtone called "Alarm." I would also try to get to sleep no later than eleven.

Why not stay up later and sleep longer? That seems like a win-win in my book. Why force yourself to get up early?
