Honestly, people are definitely dumber. They just keep passing stuff around. Nobody fact-checks anything anymore — I mean, that’s how Trump got elected. He just said whatever he wanted, and people believed everything, and when the things he said turned out not to be true, people didn’t care because they’d already accepted it. It’s real scary. I’ve never seen anything like it.

My sites were picked up by Trump supporters all the time. I think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything. His campaign manager posted my story about a protester getting paid $3,500 as fact. Like, I made that up. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist.

Rare for someone to come out and admit to this, especially so soon after an election. I'm sure Trump supporters won't believe this story though, because it doesn't align with their existing views.

Believe in fake news if old.

This is already a well known phenomenom. It doesn't matter if they admit to it, nor if the stories are concretely and thoroughly debunked. By then they've already served their purpose which is pretty much unilateraly to whip people up into a hateful frenzy.

Sigh

The GOP has monopolized misinformation.

Russia mastered it and are merely passing it on to their disciples.

He's the symptom not the cause. The cause is the methodical destruction of primary and secondary educational infrastructure in the US. Largely thanks to the GOP at lower levels.

Why we acting like this is new? This is the same pay and hell, the same man, who convinced tens of millions of people that our president was a Muslim from Kenya.

These people have never been concerned with Facts.

So that's where all the "professional protesters!!!!!" shit came from.

Funnily enough, I remember reading an ancient text with a prophecy that said people would be so stupid they would not even care that they were stupid.

This guy acts like he was a satirist but he is full of shit. He wrote stories he knew would get shared to hell because that's how he made money.

Disgusting interview. What a greedy, amoral shithead.

Keep telling yourself you're a satirist if it helps you sleep at night I guess

yeah. people are stupid

My trump voting family members literally posted a screenshot of that Craigslist ad recently...

Also Zuclerburg sucks. Not admitting that Facebook players a large part of this.

MGS2 fucking called it man

All this MGS2 mention, I really need to go back and fucking play MGS2 I haven't played since it was released so I don't remember much, just being angry at using Raiden all the time.

OT: Yeah, Trump won backed by fake news, this is going to be a norm come next election, hopefully people are less stupid that time around.

Anecdotal evidence:

Remember that faked Trump quote, where Trump allegdly said he would be a Republican candidate, because Republicans are so dumb?

A friend believes the quote is real.

But about democrats.

This dude is/was making $120k a year by just making shit up?

That can't be real.

*Looks at Trump*

I believe it

This might have had a real impact on blind conservative news-sharing habits if he had pulled the veil off before the election. After the fact, it's fucking infuriating that he was aware he was playing a useful idiot for Trump's campaign and just kept right on going with it.

Has anything good ever come from acting against peoples' interests "for the lulz"? It's such a ridiculous, cancerous motivation.

A Trump voter friend of my mom's posted that. I didn't know the context about it at the time, but it smelled fishy, so I asked her why they had time to take a screenshot but not enough time to archive the link to the ad.

She deleted the post five minutes later.

Sorry Gaf, but if this guy is making six figures writing fake news story and is profiting from idiots, I think I'm about to do the same. I'll worry about the implications later.

Breitfart, here I come.

Uhh I get that he's got part of the responsibility, and he admits as much, but it's definitely far more the fault of the idiots who so utterly lack in critical thinking that they'd click and share without a thought.

Again, the voters are to blame. They are adults who should know better. This is not the fault of a single dude, the problem runs far, far deeper.

it's not unheard of if your stuff is visited and shared by enough people. That's the facebook effect at work: everything that is successful is far more successful than it ought to be because people influence each other's consumer habits, including information consumption.

The bigger issue is that this hypocrisy of Google on who gets Adsense and why has been ancient at this point. Where its rules clearly specify original, self-made content (and thereby what you would expect obviously either explicit parody or true, but not without any statement to which. Google did not have a rule on that), the average place using it can be easily seen to be in violation of those rules. Video game streaming is of those (it's not your content), but better example are Tumblr pages of cat pics that just collect other people's pictures on the internet and put them on their site, commenting on other videos on youtube and calling it 'your own work', downright stealing and / or plagiarizing other works, and so on.

Like most Google's work the program is only human on the initial permission check for the Adsense account, some sampling (I presume), and flagged content. The rest seem automated or 'dont care' (to be fair, a human force would take forever to check on all that, so it's not as that's not necessary). But that leads to a lot of weird shenanigans, like that you can have a major messageboard, like say neogaf here, start replacing old posts deep in the system with porn images, and then report said images to Google for content violations meaning Evilore suddenly has to contest foul play. This is not a random example, because this scenario played out a few years ago on a major Dutch board. But then that board is basically near-4chan compared to neogaf's moderation. If you like posting here, you should probably not go all 'oh man, imma do that'.

But the point here is that Google's "rules" on Adsense seem to apply only as much as your traffic versus conversion is (conversion being traffic leading to actual sales, usually something like 1% or slightly more, but less than the roughly 10% you get in physical retail). Get lots of traffic and conversion on stolen content? It's gold, Jerry! Get lots of traffic but no conversion on original content? Get fucked, motherfucker!

So the idea that they would fuck up on allowing fake 'news' to run amok is unsurprising on how little overview on real rules Adsense has, thereby promoting people to take advantage of such an easy to game and profitable system. The wild growth of SEO Adsense sites has already led to Google having to adjust (again and again) it's ranking algorithm. The rise of 'Web search evaluators' (which is basically Google's program through other "crowdsource" platforms) is a part of that as they need human intelligence to decide whether the content is any good. The pay is laughable, so people don't invest more time in it than absolute necessary, so they will choose the first hit for a name anyway, leading to results like searching for Peyton List on Google giving you only the child actress/ singer and not the 30-year old actress currently on the show Frequency. Test it if you don't believe me.

edit: also real quality negation by our dumbass 'entrepreneur' here. "hey it's my income, I need that, despite my bullshit probably getting someone elected who's going to crash the economy and ruin everybody's life". See, this is the brand of 'new rich' in the vein of Timothy Ferris that I can't stand. The kind that will say their shit is not immoral when it's clear as daylight that it is.

Thats cute.

Isn't it though? I guess I could have just joined the mental masturbation circle-jerk here as we all pretend to be intellectual paragons in comparison those dumb ass conservatives who still think the earth is flat... But, my ego isn't in need of stroking.

Continue on, it's entertaining. Tell us how superior you are in other ways. Go on, I'm sure the list is long.
