Uhh I get that he's got part of the responsibility, and he admits as much, but it's definitely far more the fault of the idiots who so utterly lack in critical thinking that they'd click and share without a thought.

Again, the voters are to blame. They are adults who should know better. This is not the fault of a single dude, the problem runs far, far deeper.
And those adults are only so stupid because our education system has utterly failed them.

And the education system is broken because...?
Fuck Republicans

I agree with you. He's still a greedy, amoral shithead. It's not like he stopped doing this when he saw what was happening, is it?

It would be cool to have some kind of whitelist of valid news sources. As an auditor everything i do is fact checked and independently reviewed. I lose my license or can even go to jail.

Chicken little media did this to themselves. How about lobby for some regulation on how news should be defined and reported? It isnt the publics fault all major platforms are bought up and spouting bullshit. Those pillars of integrity created in the past were sacrificed for viewership.

Dr. Jimmy Rustling has won many awards for excellence in writing including fourteen Peabody awards and a handful of Pulitzer Prizes. When Jimmies are not being Rustled the kind Dr. enjoys being an amazing husband to his beautiful, soulmate; Anastasia, a Russian mail order bride of almost 2 months. Sounds legit tho

This ain't new. The GOP has been trying to gut education forever because it's easier to manipulate uneducated people.
You are correct, of course. Also don't forget the notion that universities are all about "liberal brainwashing". Anti-intellectualism is a plague.

I agree with you. He's still a greedy, amoral shithead. It's not like he stopped doing this when he saw what was happening, is it?
According to the interview, he genuinely didn't think Trump would win. Of course he should have known better but in this mistake, he's far from the only one.

I really need to start a business that takes advantage of gullible, hateful people and then donate the profits to a good cause like Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and the Sierra Club.

Isn't it though? I guess I could have just joined the mental masturbation circle-jerk here as we all pretend to be intellectual paragons in comparison those dumb ass conservatives who still think the earth is flat... But, my ego isn't in need of stroking.

Continue on, it's entertaining. Tell us how superior you are in other ways. Go on, I'm sure the list is long.

You sound salty

Grade school needs a class that helps people determine good sources from bad sources and a statistics class that explains EXACTLY what can be extrapolated from statistical examples because our society can't tell the difference between fact and fiction and misinformation is force fed to everyone through easy avenues while fact checking takes time.

It's not gonna get better. (unless a Trump Presidency is a disaster of epic proportions, which causes some self-reflection among his supporters?... FUCK)

Trying? There is no try. They have been doing it for generations, and very effectively when they need to ramp it up. It's not a plan of action. It's a policy long in effect. It's the norm.
That in itself is nothing new. Most civilizations with class structures similar do this as a foundation for separation of tasks by desirability and wealth. Also for recruitment outside of labor such as warfare, population control and taxation.

There are whole industries and specialists that study how to pass off crap as fact. These people know how to manipulate stories and headlines to say what they want and monetize it. Your average person may or may not have valid college experience which means many people's capabilities for researching papers never extended past BOOK REPORTS. They are ill prepared for combating the misinformation. Then of course the misinformation is easily accessible and reinforces their mentality which makes it easy to swallow as opposed to the truth which may be more complicated or bitter to accept. We need to prepare people.

I'm just waiting for the "gotcha" response article revealing that this fake news maker is entirely made up.

As more people see the potential for making money in fake news, it will only grow. Threat of criminal prosecution would limit its growth, but that sure isn't happening with the current state of the US government. It only takes a few unethical people to make this possible.

Maybe everyone waiting for a manufacturing job should give up and start a fake news site instead. And some other ones should start up services that filter or flag fake and real news articles and sites. Trump can create whole new economies supporting this. Trump-supporters may not all be up to speed on the machine learning techniques useful for setting up such an enterprise though. The people who actually need that service won't sign up for it either. It would need to be mandated by the FCC to ISPs to force it. Unfortunately, the FCC just announced it was halting all new contentious consumer-focused initiatives. There will be many more domestic Russia Todays by next election.

The Liberal left is no better an example of that.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
My trump voting family members literally posted a screenshot of that Craigslist ad recently...

Also Zuclerburg sucks. Not admitting that Facebook players a large part of this.
Please please please share this story with them as soon as possible

It's worth remembering that one of the reasons Facebook doesn't filter out fake news yet is because it would disproportionately affect conservatives. It happens on both sides but one of them is demonstrably worse.

That guy can rot, he's a parasite profiting off misinformation.
No no no. He's writing parody's. You don't read an article about Muslims being banned from airports and think "Holy shit that's hilarious! Is this the Onion?" Its funny stuff. The best.

NPR had people on about Breitbart yesterday who all used words like "sensationalized", "parody", "overblown", etc rather than just saying the truth. Its fucking lying. These fuckers are just liars. They spent the campaign bitching about Clinton lying to people while all being the shit faced liars themselves and people bought it hook line and sinker because they desperately needed some reason to believe "Hillary's just awful".

So, playing devil's advocate here. How do we know this story is true? This seems hard to verify right?
(Legitimately curious)

I've been telling my Trump supporting friend for awhile now "nah breh, that's fake" when he sends me some dumb shit. So, I'd love to put this on his wall, but want to make sure it's not someone just taking credit.

$10k a month? Where do I sign up? I have decent photoshop skills. Some articles I'm thinking:

"Donald Trump was born under double rainbow"
"Donald Trump does not poop"
"Donald Trump invented the hamburger"

Would a law enforcing any fake news outlet to have the word "fake" or any obvious variation in their company name, brand, logo or something where it will always be associated with the brand be wrong?

This is just a rough idea but something that can always attach the brand as obviously and clearly as possible as fake and I mean something more than a disclaimer. Unless the disclaimer is size 10, bold, red, and breaks the paragraph every few lines.

Wouldn't be wrong, but would be fought tooth and nail. Much of the power of propaganda and hate speech comes from being able to lie and obfuscate truth. Clarity of information is their kryptonite.

There are days where I feel like I could make a Faustian bargain to be paid more than I do as an Engineer by spreading misinformation and hate.

But then I remember I try to not ruin society and make money while doing so.

I really dislike people who peddle fake new, even parody news sites like the Onion and the Babylon Bee.

Too many people will never fact check anything. It's the worst aspect of free speech, the ability to spread outright lies.

At the very least fake news imagineers shouldn't be partisan. For every fake Trump quote about stupid republicans, there were a million about Hillary choking out a grey in Roswell, and none about the doofus third party duo.

It has to reinforce idiotic views mixed with click bait vocabulary.

This group of Sharia loving Muslims walk into a Trump rally. What happens next? Insane!

This is so depressing. I haven't used Facebook for years, so I didn't know the propagation of fake news had gotten this bad. It used to fester on conspiracy theorist sites like Infowars, but now it's mainstream.

The cherry on top is that our new commander-in-chief believes these fake news stories over reputable sources.

Hmmm....perhaps an easier solution in that case is for Google to make an alert thats fullscreen like they do for malicious websites that say "you are about to enter a confirmed FAKE news network. All stories are fabricated and/or satyrical by nature. etc."

It would be amazing if that happened.

EDIT: Also opinion articles can be just as damaging or even more so since they can attach themselves to a reliable brand. Maybe that small yellow banner that occasionally says "we blocked a pop-up" can instead be bright red saying "this is an opinion article and is NOT by a credible/proffesional news journalist.

We clearly see on this site a lot how often the disclaimer gets overlooked by trusting its reputation. Like almost every forbes thread here is exactly that.

And Facebook needs to do something more about this too. Just as its up to the government to protect us from false information with laws and regulation we should also hold the ones who has a platform that benefits from the spreading of information equally accountable.

The other problem is that Donald Trump's base applauds the reprehensible garbage he does. Negative stories about him would just have his supporters cheering.
