A story about Trump asking both of them to publicly deny there was collusion came out a couple weeks back. This new story goes a bit further regarding what Trump requested.

Might be a reason to that. To this day we talk about Watergate, books about it, movies. Maybe Trump is wanting that spotlight. Its apparent he has no clue what he is doing as President. Its all about the $$$$ to Trump.

The part about Trump asking Rogers to push back against the FBI investigation was reported by mainstream outlets days earlier. The Observer even directly links to those reports. That's not why people had problems with that article.

It was a very carefully worded statement. Now we know that this info was leaked by someone who wanted to force Coats hand at his hearing tomorrow. I'm sure Coats is quite pissed.

No man of Coats' age and experience in Washington will lie under oath. He might duck the question in some artful way but he won't deny it categorically.
It works because maybe 10% of the people hearing it can decipher the lawyer talk.

All we know on this angle, per WaPo, is that Coats and Pompeo were asked to stay in the room with Trump privately, and in that private meeting Coats was asked to interfere with Comey's investigation, which Coats refused. Given the nature of the meeting and the two parties specifically asked to stay for it, and also that NSA Director Rogers was asked to do the same thing around this time, we can pretty safely surmise that Pompeo was asked to do what Coats and Rogers were asked to do, but the CIA's not disclosing its end. A "no comment" here doesn't necessarily suggest whether Pompeo agreed or refused, and if Coats wasn't playing ball in that meeting then Pompeo would effectively be incriminating himself in front of Coats if he had agreed.
It seems like a huge strategic blunder to call them both into that room together. So, par for the course.
