Warframe devs add three new emotes. You won't believe the price.

If I can bold this, THIS IS LIKELY JUST A RANDOM UPDATE FROM THEM AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DESTINY DEBACLE.

Thursdays are update days, and sometimes they're patches, sometimes they're larger changes like this. No where does DE talk about or reference Destiny at all!

Can someone clarify to see if my memory is wonky... didn't Warframe have an investment/purchase system before it launched? Similar to Steam Early Access or like Kickstarter stuff?

You might be thinking of the Founder's Pack, which was something closer to Kickstarter, and their current iteration called Prime Access, which lets you bypass RNG for newer content if you want. The game and all game-affecting content (guns, frames, companions, etc) has always been free.

I think the Warframe devs should be the absolute last to poke fun of shitty business practices.

Have you heard about PGI? They could teach you a thing a two about shitty business practices. Like the 500$ gold skin, or the iconic game mech behind a 210$ paywall.

I haven't played warframe recently, but 18 months ago, their business model was the one I took as example for micro-tansactions done right. All the non-cosmetic items could be obtained with in-game money or grind, and the grind was reasonable.

ITT: people who don't play warframe complaining about nonexistent issues with the game's F2P model.

Can I talk shit now? Or do I need a couple hundred more hours of not playing Waframe to criticize it?

Oh god... I still weep at what PGI did with the mechwarrior brand. So fucking terrible....

Without clicking the thread I knew, let alone believe, it would be 0$. Nice of them in a market saturated with nickel-and-dime practices but let's not pretend they're the only ones ever doing this.

Yeah, Warframe doesn't get to poke fun at Destiny when their F2P scheme is disgusting

The hell? Warframe probably has one of the most honest, and fair implementations of microtransactions in a F2P game I've ever seen. It's a game that is a great example of how to do it right. If you choose to spend money on dumb things because you lack any patience to earn it then that's all on you.

I don't play it much anymore, but I've never had a moment where micros were forced on me to advance nor did they ever throw it in my face. I've put a pretty good chunk of time into the game, maxed out many Waframes and weapons/mods without having to spend a single cent. The only thing I've ever bought were more slots to carry more Weapons and Frames, and I didn't even need to do that. I only did because they (in my opinion) deserved that support from me.

Also anyone who is playing Destiny that calls Warframe a massive grind isn't wrong, but it's really like the pot calling the kettle black. Not to rag on Destiny (I know that's the hot thing to do right now), but it's definitely a bigger grind than Warframe, and I've played both a ton. In Warframe, at least all of the time I put in feels like I'm being properly rewarded for my efforts.

The Founders Pack is most likely it. Firefall was doing something similar at the time so I thought I may have been mixing things up.

My time with warframe actually had a lot less grinding than my time in Destiny, personally. Destiny also has a lot of Macrotransactions. I spent $40 on warframe to get the cores necessary to make most of the game's suits normalized; in order to get up to date with Destiny's expansions(excluding the base cost), I'd have to spend a lot more than that.
lol, wut?

This thread is making me want to install Warframe again. Has it been updated to be fully playable with gamepads? The last time I stopped playing because I had to reach for the Mouse to do a few menu things.

Yep. In my 500 hours (!!) in Warframe I haven't rushed a single build, nor bought items with platinum to skip out on the parts hunt. I've bought a bunch of platinum though - to spend on visual customizations and to support the game. DE is doing it right. Its a fair model and works for a free game. Put that stuff in a AAA $60 game and it takes on an entirely different character though.

Macro is key there - I think they mean the expansions.

100% support, and the UI is entirely different now. The updates to that game have been crazytits.

Exactly. Hell, to me most of the fun is in the hunt for Blueprints/etc. It feels nice earning that stuff and building it on your own. I won't hate on people who skip the process and buy stuff (everyone finds enjoyment in different ways), but if anyone who does this complains about it? Well, I can't say I sympathize with them.

I've spent very little on the game because I got deep into the trade market for a good while there, but I'll probably buy the full Prime Access next update to show my support.

Should be, since there's a console version of Warframe now.

its been alright the few times i tried it and more likely decent due to the console versions but i'm a keyboard and mouse person. :p

Also Warframe microtransactions are usually fair since 95% of the time you don't have to buy them to have a good time.

The nearest would be the slots for more frames and weapons but

1. The default amount for weapons is decent if you don't mind not collecting most weapons (you can level then sell them)

2. The warframe amount is ok but slightly below mainly due to the late game content where having certain frames for stuff can be of great help (eg Mesa or Mag with the Greedy Pull Augment).

3. You can trade stuff like mods, prime parts and some special weapons for platinum (real money currency) with other users and get some kind of personal market going.

Another would be "potatoes" but those are available via normal alerts, special alerts (usually on Fridays/the weekend) or special events (that lasts a week or so).

It's a shame that Warframe has all that content but then it's all janky and kinda of ugly.

It has what Destiny lacks the same way that Destiny has what Warframe lacks.

Oh well. But this is a cool PR move no doubt.

That would make it even better. Destiny charges big bucks and makes a big deal about new emotes while this is just standard stuff for Warframe.

I guess my threshold for what's reasonable is pretty low. Allowing players to get potatoes for a mere two hours a month was way below mine. So was the whole "you have to relevel your equipment all the way from the ground up if you choose to change a single mod slot" idea.

I love that BuzzFeed is starting to build a strong prescence on GAF.

That's wonderful media marketing.

More free things to make fun of Bungie tho pls devs

Define "done right". Warframe's isn't terrible but it's hardly good. Dota 2 and POE are examples of F2P "done right".

Again, target your ire at activision not bungie.

I really think this attitude is unhealthy. The same thing happened with Halo MCC, people wanted to blame companies 343 contracted for the mess it was at launch. But, ignoring that for a second, does it really matter who is at fault? At the end of the day the game (MCC) was still broken. Be angry at the game and don't support it, don't waste your time trying to deflect the anger.

If I could tell you exactly which person at Activision or Bungie decided on the pricing for Destiny's DLC, would it matter? Sure you might want to send them hatemail, but at the end of the day I will just do my best to not support those practices by not buying the DLC, regardless of if it's Bungie's fault, Activision's fault, or if some janitor snuck in and changed the prices at midnight.

I wonder how much it will cost when they add fun gameplay to Warframe

My thoughts exactly.

Well, considering it already has fun gameplay, it would total you zero dollars and zero cents.

Destiny is fun gameplay. War frame plays and feels like a free to play game and that's bad. Tried it and spent numerous hours on it when it came to ps4. It's highly over rated and gets passes for poor gameplay because it's f2p imho.

Man bungie is going to be the industrys whipping boy for a while

I don't think they will care when the numbers roll in. It's going to be hard for people to stay mad all the way until September. I bet Bungie /activision will laugh all the way to the bank with ttk and their terrible pricing.

edit to an edit: Ha... I normally automatically dock off points from gameplay if a game's free to play, so I'm not giving it a pass. It's a damn fun ninja game. But to each their own.

Warframe is top tier in F2P models. You can do EVERYTHING without spending money, and it is all realistically accomplishable.

Good thing Destiny doesn't have that!

There are no required microtransactions in Warframe. I played the game for three months and never spent a dollar. I was in endgame with everyone else, having a blast.

Totally agree with this

And yet people like myself continue to pay top dollar for Warframe goodness.... How do they do it?

Seriously, devs. THIS is how you make money. I've spent more on Warframe alone than I have on Steam in 10 years combined. Believe me, I checked. 300+ games, still spent more on Warframe. I forget the last time I checked, but I know my Warframe bill back when I did was higher than the cost of my PC.

And the best part is that it is all more or less a donation. I could easily earn all the stuff I bought. I know two other people in real life who play Warframe and one only paid $5 ever and is rank 13, and does the same high-level shit I do, and the other is a 16-17 year old kid who doesn't have a computer and still manages to keep a high rank, without buying anything but cosmetics they he can't easily earn in-game.

Warframe is the perfect F2P model and a damn good general business model.
