Would you guys recommend assembling this kit before painting or the other way around?

I'd have to look at the kit myself to be sure, but you can probably partially assemble it and then paint. It looks like the wings overlap at certain points and so painting under that overlap would be pretty annoying.

So my wife just got me this totally unbidden gift for our anniversary:

Heldrake! This is definitely the push I needed to get into painting. I still have my little squad of Dark Angels lying around so I think I'll practice on them first. Would you guys recommend assembling this kit before painting or the other way around?

That's a nice kit. I understand it's a beast on the table too. I would think that he would be an intense first experience at modeling and painting! I have no idea how difficult the assembly is, but I haven't heard anything bad (like drop pod doors, for instance), so that's a good sign. Also, the vast majority of the kits I have put together have been pretty painless.

I would also partially assemble it, paint, then finish assembly.

Gotcha. I think I'll tackle that after I'm fairly confident in my painting skills. Until then it'll be my carrot on a stick to invest in some decent paints and brushes.

Fulgrim is infinitely better than Descent of Angels. Lion El' Jonson is such a fucking dong, the guy is stupid beyond words.

Much truth in this.

Games Workshop opened up a new shop about 20 minutes from where we live. I should curse them because we already picked up the new rulebook, piles O paint, imperial infantry handbook, few tools, skull measuring tape... etc etc it was bad. I'll be spending the weekend going through their painting classes while my wife gets a crash course in how to play.

Thanks for the link, Tacitus.

I managed to get 40 minutes into Fulgrim, I just couldnt get into it :/
Descent is way different already from the start with its slower pace, but at least I got into it faster.

It's a tough listen, I don't fault you. You're not supposed to like the expedition the Emperor's Children are on, but aside from Fulgrim everyone's voice acting was so grating (especially as they slid further and further into corruption). If I hadn't known the amazing nonsense that awaited me at the end, I too might have quit listening.

Need to do a comprehensive BL audio post one of these days...

Can you buy the audio-books digitally now? I never really want to order a disc or something (although my preference would just be to actually read it).

I really need to get all of the audio-books with Garro, last I checked it was only discs though; or maybe I was just looking in the wrong spots.

I went to myself "40 minutes....who the hell reads on a timer..." before realising you meant an audiobook :(

Yea I don't know about that format, but in book form it was brilliant.

Fulgrim takes a while to get started, I hated the beginning of it too. Once the heresy begins it really takes off and becomes hard to put down.

Descent of Angels honestly never gets going; I love the Dark Angels but I don't think I've found a book about them that's actually any good. Still, I hope you find some enjoyment in it!

Fulgrim covers the dropsite massacre in the most detail so you might want to finish it for that.

I quite enjoy the slow ass pacing of Descent so fa. The fantasy adventure with kings and knights and stuff are really interesting imo.

Is it the Isstvan III or Isstvan V event it covers? Because with both Galaxy in Flames and Eisenstein I am quite "done" with the Isstvan III event.

Not to mention the heresy orgy they have. That was beautiful.

You make strong points, I cant argue with that. Maybe I'll try again after Descent is finished...

The dropsite massacre is the battle on Isstvan V. Fulgrim and The First Heretic are the only books that really cover it in detail.

Would like some input. I thought about buying a (jump pack) Chaplain for my Ultramarines but then decided I'd try and convert my own. However, now I'm having a hard time deciding what legs to use.

MJn523q.png

The legs on the left offer more height and a more dynamic pose, but they put the model a little over the top and make him look more like a Sanguinary Guard (where the legs come from) than an Ultramarine. The legs on the right make him much shorter and more static but they fit the Chaplain look a bit better. I figure I can just give him a taller base to fix the height but before I pull the trigger I thought I'd look for input on here. Also, I'm not settled on the head. I may end up using the Chaos Space Marine skull helmet in the end.

Thoughts?

I know the primarchs are supposed to be 10-12 feet tall, but I really wish they hadn't stuck normal humans in this scene. The scale differences are just making me chuckle.

The thing is the Primarchs were never that tall originally. Neither was the Emperor. He was supposed to have been hidden amongst humanity for thousands of years - always near great events but never at the forefront.

Seen any 12 foot tall astronauts recently?

They look bloody stupid at that scale.

Meteorain

I think 10ft is pushing it for the tallest of them even (Magnus).

It only takes about 6inches or so to seemingly tower over someone.

I don't know anything about him, but Lion El'Jonson has the most hilarious name in 40k.

Doubling down on the Smurfs lately and started listening to Know No Fear, so far Abnett hasn't been insufferably Abnett--I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I guess the power and majesty of our spiritual liege can even bring him to account.

How do most Space Marines feel about regular humans? I've heard/read at best they take pity on them. At worst, and most of the time, they see them as insignificant - not worthy of the Emperor's love or attention.

Really depends on the Chapter.

Salamander, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, are some of the main ones that really see themselves as defenders of humanity. Still above mortals, of course, but that edge of superiority is quite subdued.

Varies from chapter to chapter. Space Wolves are well known for having a lot of compassion for humans.

I just completed the fourth book in Horus Heressy, "The Flight of the Eisenstein", I really enjoyed it. Intense stuff.

Loved this quote:

"My kinsmen have betrayed me. My master has turned traitor. My honour brothers are dead, and my Legion is on the path to corruption. My honour, Captain Halbrecht, is all I have left".

Played my second game set of games every, small 600 pt battles.
Did not bring my new stuff because not painted and barely assembled (found out later that it would have been fine if they were not painted) .
Was only planning on watching, but ended up getting drafted into playing to balance out the numbers. Played a Necron squad, first against Tyranids and I took them in points handily.
Second was against Chaos Marines, I opened up strong using a cloak ability that made me able to deep strike one of my troops and bullseyed it, blazed on some massive dinosaur looking thing with massive cannons and it shrugged off almost all of it.
After that it was just pretty lopsided.
Next time my Wolves will run.

I really enjoy the small point skirmish games. They are not only quick paced, but also require you to think in a different manner compared to a normal game.

Unpainted miniatures may be fielded, but they're unlucky. You should paint them before fielding them.

I can believe it :)
I have been scouring tutorials, painted my first (would post pic but it is in some little shop contest which it is going to lose terribly)
Going to start on others through the week.

My favorite moment is when Garro has to tell Rogal Dorn what happened.

Ben Counter: He's crap. Not much more to say, really.
Recommendations: Even I have my limits on money I'll spend on bad books. If anyone has any recommendations of books he's written that aren't an affront to God, though, I'll add 'em.
Well...borrowed The Grey Knights Omnibus from a friend of mine. Will see how it goes.

Yep, that was a good scene.

I totally understand why Sigismund is a Black Templar now. Dude is so fucking dour.

Dorn goes fucking nuclear on him in Crimson Fist, poor Sigi.

Groan of the day: In Know No Fear a freshly minted dreadnought is informed that he may be sullen (which for an Astartes to think worth mentioning means really dang sullen), but more importantly, that he may now experience fear. The incredulous Astartes replies to the tech priests, "but I thought you said you made me a dread-not?" ABNETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reading it currently, just finished "Grey Knights". I was pleasantly surprised given this thread's (or more specifically that one post's) chilly reception to him. All the characters are samey, as can be expected, but there's a couple twists I legitimately didn't see coming.

Abnett's the best.

It has the
Cognitae
in it, which means
Enuncia
can't be far behind! Sure am glad I read the unheralded sequel to one of his series, I would be missing out on some primo fanservice otherwise.

Also, apparently the Smurfs are the MOST secular legion in the Imperium, how does one even quantify that?
