I'll check these books out as well,

I dont know much about any of warhammer stuff...The only thing I know is people play a tabletop game that has kick ass miniature figures that everyone paints up to look badass. So im just kind of looking for a starting pointing.
Get the first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus, The Founding. Make that one of your first purchases. Fantastic set of novels that you can get on Amazon for 10 bucks. A nice insight into the general Imperial Guard. It's the first thing I've ever read when it comes to 40K and I'm enjoying it immensely.

Actually I was just looking at that. Thanks!

So my shopping list looks like this

Horus Rising
False Gods
Galaxy In Flames
Path of the Warrior
Path of the Seer
Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding

Will keep you going for a while. I tend to buy mine from a wonderful little specialist SF/Crime bookstore. I can't help but grab new 40k fiction every time I walk in.

Still preferring the chainsword to the power axe. The speed matters.

Buy the Inquisitor Draco books. They are much, much better than all the other books.

Especially the first book is magnificent.

Added Extermiantus info to the OT. Man, my hype is reaching critical levels now.

Grinds my gears that they are still holding back info about it.

But hey. Psyched to wreck some orks' shit. I figure the Chaos Marines will show up roughly halfway through.

The setting and the author are not touched in any later work of fiction. It is the REAL wh40k.

I would buy one and then decide if you like them. Do not buy them all at once (if that is what you intended to do).

I, for example, didn't like Horus Rising and I'm not a fan of this author.

edit
I just noticed that only horus Rising if from Dan Abnett of your list.

There seem to be some "Pro" Orks in the screenshots. They have glowing eyes and weapons. But whatever, I would love to see a walkthrough video or something like that.

I've forgotten the name of the place, but is that particular bookshop in Fortitude Valley? I might be getting my stores mixed up. At least, towards the Valley? I moved from Brisbane five years ago, forgive my piss-poor memory.

Pulp Fiction, in the little Anzac Square shopping spot near Central Station.

Polite, helpful, up to date, enthusiastic; so good that I don't mind if I can get it cheaper anywhere else.

Went into a local retailer here in Aus and they had these "Hand Books" available for the taking. I grabbed one and assumed it was just some promotional trash, but it's actually a pretty quality booklet considering it was free..

It's about 21 pages, full colour and it's quite robust with info. Considerably better than an instruction manual you'd normally get with the game I think.

THAT'S IT! Yeah. I got my geography mixed up. Had visited it a few times. IIRC it had a terrific array of sci-fi concept art compendiums.

Best not derail, lest I be crushed beneath the righteous boot of the Emperor's Finest.

I got the Official Guide when I when to pre-order. I must say I was glad to see the amount of Chapters in the game.

Sorry to hear that. :( I've been playing the demo and the first thing that strikes me about it is how fun I find the combat. Blasting Orc's feels great but I like that it plays like an action game as much as a shooter. I can dart around and tear them bitches up with my chainsaw as I occasionally dish out some pain on distant enemies with my bolters, the flow of combat seems great.
Shooting isn't bad. Its responsive enough, but it also feels like its secondary to the melee system.

The melee system is where I had problems at. The controls didn't feel like they matched the combat. Its odd to explain, but it felt sloppy. The enemies didn't responded enough to your blows, nor did you respond enough to their's. Going into this part with a bit more detail. For how aggressive and meatbag-like enemies/and you are. The controls should have gave me more precision over my character. Neither you or them seem very responsive to getting attacked. A dozen slowly hack away at you, while you slowly hack away at the dozen. You have the tools to push back the lot or to kite them. They did give me what I needed to play the game. But they didn't give me what I need to feel like I'm playing it well. This is where my dilemma comes in. I can't pin point exactly where the problem is... it just feels off to me. Like it wants to be something deeper than a hack and slash, but not really giving you the tools to execute anything deeper than it.

I had other problems too, like I did not think the execution system to regen HP. Being forced to stun an enemy and get locked into an action, while others can still attack. It never sits well with me. I understand how its supposed to be balanced around strafing the outside groups and funneling them, or using your combos to execute right after you cleared some distance. But Its was such an annoying design decision.

Maybe it just didn't click with me like it is doing with all the others. But the title just didn't have the finesse in mechanics I expect from action titles. I'll probably give it another try later.

How does one, someone who used to play Eldar master race in 40K back when he was a kid in England, get caught up on the various Space Marine factions/history?

My mind is literally bursting trying to figure out who all these different coloured factions are. I briefly remember something about a Dark Angel faction being introduced last time I went near this shit. Does that even exist?

Yes, Dark Angels are dark green with white robes.

The lexicanum is a good place to start, it has a pictorial list of all chapters here and here

I keep playing the demo. This game really snuck up on me, but I'm pretty excited right now.

ps - It has one of the best title screens in a long time.

Which key do I push to detonate the sticky bombs? It's odd that you can't view or change the key bindings.

Is there a demo yet for people who didn't pre-order? It's so stupid how they do that shit. I'm not buying it without trying it. Your loss, THQ.

I've also noticed a few people have been pretty negative towards this games because of the name. There have been billboards and ads on tv for this and everytime I've been with someone who's not a warhammer fan(kind of everyone I know then) they all groan and go "It's called space marine? Really? uh". The game looks cool but they probably could have picked a better name...

I know you can download it on XBL and PSN without a pre-order. I thought Steam was the same?

Should have went with "Bald Space Marine."

On one hand, I'm having more fun here than I ever did with God of War. On the other hand, the different melee weapons feel like model swaps. The combat engine could use a little extra loving. My purchase is completely dependent on the quality of the multiplayer at this point.

I guess they could have called it
Warhammer 40k: Adeptus Astartes
but then instead of groaning at the name, all the mindless sheep would just be confused.

Space Marine is fine, but I can see why people who are not familiar with the lore or other 40k games do not recognize it. I hope that this game is boosting the brand in the video game world a bit.

I also want to use this thread to point out that everyone needs to read the Ciaphas Cain books. So good. Hilarious but also shows a different side of the Imperium.

Is it just like well known first and second founding or is it deep, deep like Exorcists and Mentors, if you wanted?

I actually started the first omnibus this morning. I can see myself really enjoying it.

I am quite sure he is talking about there being a nice number of levels in the game ^^ chapters as in game chapters, not SM chapters

I completely understand this. Those not familiar with WH40k will look at this game as nothing more than a copy cat of God and Gears of War. When in fact a lot of the imaginary, especially in Gears case, were taken from 40k IMO. I like to think of this game as 40k 101: An introduction to the Warhammer 40000 universe.

Indeed, that was I meant ( a nice number of levels in the Single Player), but I can see why he was confused. Thank you.
