Joel is repeatedly called old, old timer and Gramps throughout the game. Yet the guy looks like he's in his mid 30s and has the strength of men in their 20s

He cleaves through men like they're nothing and Has a higher body count that drake. He pretty much looks the same as he does in the intro, other than abit of silver in his hair; which men get in their 30s anyway.

Man went through hell. Daughters dead; had to murder innocent people for 20 years just to eat.

Could this man achieve Joel's feats?

I find it comical that whereever you got that image from OP, thinks that is what an average 52 yr old looks like. I'm a few yrs away from that number and i can tell you that i am in better shape than most guys in their 30s. Why does society treat men like shit? Just a sidebar and i wont go down that rabbit hole further lol

On topic, i didn't think Joel was supposed to be 52 in the games, i figured he was a dude in his early 40s.

Did you see the fight? Paul is not a high level boxer either he's low level and Tyson had nothing for him because of age, and that's a former World Champ. An average 50 year old would be far worse regardless if he "looks after himself".

The only conclusion I can make as to why people keep bringing this up is that some guys subconsciously seem to be intimidated by a buff women’s physique. Whether or not she could take down a man was never part of the argument, yet the discussion seems to keep resolving around it.

Two completely different standards

Say what you want about both of them being embellishments, it’s a video game, but Joel maintaining his mass and strength is way more unrealistic than Abby getting buff from weightlifting for years from her mid teens

Sean Connery for the film Zardoz. 1974, so he was around 44 years old. You can look at him a decade later and he was still mostly in shape in the 80s. I can see Joel as a Sean Connery that never stopped doing hard labor and is genetically gifted. Was Joel too powerful? Probably. Too beautiful? No. But too youthful looking? Maybe. But not to the point that he was breaking immersion IMHO.

Bro, go to ur local gym and look how pathethically weak all(yes, all) women are there, they are lifting weights that 14yo boys are even ashamed to touch when they go to the gym for the first time, stop comparing abby, even on roids to anything that joel did.

TLOU2 was amazing graphically, but cared agenda, including equality, while in reality women and men are nothing but equal, especially in terms of what they can do physically, and what they can endure, both physically and mentaly.
Abby on roids would need to be under supervision and constant check ups of an endocrinologist, being on juice isnt just randomly taking something, u gotta check ur blood every few weeks and change dosages/apply other drugs, on top u need to take stuff that prevents/softens sideeffects and even with all that there is no warranty ur health wont suffer badly( u could actually say, being on roids is like taking a loan, u will have to pay it off eventually, with nasty interest).

Druckman just had that vision to show of masculine woman manhandling big guys while still having 0 sideeffects from years of roids usage, all to promote wokeness and to show "strong independend woman".

In this short clip alone abby pulled feats of strenght and endurance that brock lesnar wouldnt be ashamed of, and no- juice doesnt(shouldnt) make her tiny fragile feminine scull more durable, roids are actually making ur bones weaker, not stronger :p
She would get knocked out cold after one slap with open hand to the face normally, and here she is taking a hit to the temple with a steel gun like its nothing and right after that not even falling on the ground and spending few seconds to reccuperate but fighting with clear mind and overwhelming her oponent with pure strenght :)
Then when asked if she is allright- yeah :p

I mostly ignore Abby's criticism because TLOUS is a work of fiction, in any apocaliptic movie/game realistic everyone would be skinny and unfit because everyday food protein would be hard to come by.
I suppose it comes down to your scale for believability in fiction. I’m sure you’d agree that big bird would be out of place in TLoU universe.

Is it reasonable for Nate Drake to beat 100 men back to back in hand to hand combat? Probably not, but as he could beat 1 man we can stretch our believability. Could Nadine beat up 1 man like Nate? No. So it breaks your immersion and you see it for what it is.
 
Well, I’m sure he not eating any junkie stuff and he staying fit for being active. I seen some 50yr olds moving and looking like they in there 30’s. But once they get near 60 or mover 60. The age start really catching up for sure then
 
Amen to that, lighting and angles and a pump work wonders. In a large shirt I look fit but not very muscular.

I recently quit(early this year), it helped me when I started and I did take it off and on since '99. I have just recently started thinning(hair) so I wanted to see if stopping would have any effect. Probably not, but no harm is trying. Plus I haven't noticed much of a detrimental effect from stopping so far.

Weird I just stopped taking creatine recently also. I notice a difference but it's very little. Like if I'm benching 250 5 x 5 and it's semi-easy for me. When I stop taking creatine that last set of 5 x 5 might only be 4 instead of 5. If I do get the 5 it's very hard to pull off.

The one thing I have noticed though is I no longer wake up in the middle of the night to pee like I used to. I drink a ton of water and to not wake up in the middle of the night I had to stop drinking water at like 4pm which I would never do. Now I can drink water like an hour before bed and I'll still sleep through the rest of the night.

To be fair I don't think its just men. I am 100% in agreement with you though and in the same position at 47/48. I am fitter now than I was in my 20s, as I then smoked, drunk, took far too many narcotics and didn't look after myself at all. I hurt a lot more now but am so much fitter.

I guess the problem is unless you have sustained an injury that prevents you from putting the hard work in, nothing is stopping anyone our age from not looking like that and yet so many people give up.

1 hour a day is all it takes, be it running, strength training and on days off some good walking, stuff that the human body needs to function properly.

49 here and that sums it up perfectly lol......my 13+ years as ice hockey when i was younger too getting knocked flying all the time and knocking others flying did a number on my knees that i feel now. My main pain point daily is my hips but none of that stops me from keeping fit, especially seeing as family history isnt in my favor (Lost both parents before aged 65, and my sister at aged 42).

They’re not going for mass to the same degree men are because they want to enhance femininity, not masculinity. If you’ve been to the gym you ought know that you lift differently for different goals. Women don’t want to max out their shoulders and biceps so their weight usage reflects that. It’s why there are so comparatively few female powerlifters.

There’s also a reason that’s backed up by science, in how they are reinforced that they’re not strong so they psychologically don’t push as hard in weight lifting.

Simply telling people they were on gear increased their strength by 321%. The study shows the whole swings your performance can have based on placebo’s or nocbos. Women aren’t anywhere near as strong as men at peak for each, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t conditioned to think their cieling is much lower than it actually is. By the way, the amount of dianabol administered by way of that example was only enough to effect strength by single digits.

I go to the gym 3 times a week but I don't lift because muscles disgust me. I can run up to the 20th floor without getting out of breath though.

That's a no brainer, we're all on borrowed time, but I've been hearing this since age 30. My brother said 30 is the year bro. Then a brother in law said 35, it's all downhill and you'll have a gut like me. Then it was 38-40. Now the new one is 47. Guess I'll wait another 4 years to begin falling apart. Maybe then someone will tell me 51 is when it will happen and I'll wait some more lol.

Ha, I thought "Over the Hill" was outdated greeting card pap too, when I hit 40 and felt just fine from not smoking and living relatively active. Then one day I woke up and just was like, "What the fuck, knees! I thought i was doing you a favor by taking a desk job for two decades..."

I have a desk job but we have standing desks so I am either walking on a treadmill or using a recumbent bike my whole shift.

I will just adress this first point, which proves u got 0 clue what u talking about- even young buck, in his late teens/early tweenties with testosterone going in his veins like crazy needs years upon years to build any decent amount of musclemass naturally.
It doesnt happen overnight, those 25-30lbs(and im talking best case scenario, assuming dedication, no or very light injuries and sticking to the diet/workout rutine all the time) of lean musclemass u can build over what u start with is long process, usually 10years+, even for a healthy guy in his prime who lifts heavy.

And since women have feminine endocrine system(roughly 16-17x lower testosterone vs male, much higher estrogen lvl for females, many other differences too), and their bones/joints are not build for lifting heavy weight(from guys perspective) there is literally no way in hell they need to worry about getting bulky/too muscular, it simply cannot happen unless they stick needle with roids into their body.

As a proof here some polish female fit-tuber, she trained for years specifically for powerlifting, and competed early on in bikini fitness, then later in powerlifting competitions(as an amatour), she did participate in polish edition of "american ninja warrior" too, on one of the vids she does 10+ proper pull ups(full rom, no kiping, so they look 10x better from the ones that grandpa kennedy does).
TLDR : She isnt just some total rando who doesnt know how to workout, it was/is basically her whole life day by day for 8+years, and yet thats how she looks:

Do u understand now, why abby, or that tiny american fit influencer look out of place/unnatural? Coz they fucking are, woman can not build any big(compared to a guy) amount on muscles on their shoulders/traps/chest simply, her hormones will not allow it :)

Caring so much musclemass is terrible for his health, and especially at older age those side effects from the mountains of drugs he took must be crazy, when he started playing in movies he got bigger, much bigger vs his size durning wrestling carreer ffs :p
 
I still have no idea why the East and West divide is so huge. No one in Asia would EVER complain that the protagonist is too strong or youthful for their age. In fact it is cultural lore that the stronger you are and the more you train your body, the less you age. So the idea that someone looked younger than they are is almost assumed if it is a protagonist.

And yet in the West somehow there is a demand for "realism"?

Who is even PAYING for realism? I wouldn't. Maybe that's why Skyrim in Asia is always modded to have beautiful people. Does the West want to deny that playing games is an escape, that they want gaming to be art? In Asia everyone know gaming is MEANT to be an escape from reality. So Asia never care about realism.

You just linked some abstracts. And you didnt even understand them.

Hard facts:

Women have 60-80% less muscle mass than men on average, and they also have higher body fat.

Women don't build muscle mass as quickly as men, especially in the upper body.

Women tend to have most of their muscle mass in lower body, which plays a minor role in fighting. Men have dramatically more muscle mass in their chest, arms and shoulders, which are the most important muscle groups for fighting.

It's true that women heavily rely on IGF1 pathways for muscle growth, but that's simply because they have low T. Their T levels are too low to drive muscle protein synthesis.

Men have 10-20x higher T + IGF1. Women have super low T + IGF1. Testosteron upregulates IGF1 production. So men have a significant anabolic edge.

It is true that women have high recovery abilities for low-intensity endurance activities. But that's limited to specific phases of the menstrual cycle and doesn't play a role for strength and hypertrophy training. Men have significantly higher recovery capabilities for strength and hypertrophy training due to high T.

Women can carry and sustain life through pregnancy.

It's a true marvel if you think about it. Biomagic. And it's by far the most important feature of the human species.

This feature comes with advantages:

Women have much stronger immune systems than men due to higher estrogen. They have immune redundancy so they can keep themselves and a baby alive. They are much more resistant to infections and recover faster from sickness.

Women have the gift of longevity. On average, they have a longer livespan than men because of genetic and hormonal differences. The body of a woman can repair DNA much faster.

Women have a different brain structure with certain parts overdeveloped compared to men. They excel at communication, multitasking, and emotional intelligence.

Women are designed just fine with significant advantages over men.

There's no need to create lies in order to make woman into something that they are not.

All video game characters have a measure of embellishment. Their usually exceptional, not average. You could find dues like Joel in the real world but even then it would only take a couple young guys grouped up to take him down.

His reaction time and stamina is 100% not gonna be enough for that but that goes for most things. Nathan drake isn't taking down 10 able bodied young men either
