Wasteland 2 Kickstarter project by inXile entertainment [Ended, $3 Million Funded]

No? Avellone can do his Kickstarter when he's good and ready, and my money will be there for him. This isn't a rushing game. It's simple about whether you have something that people want.

Exactly and I am pretty sure I want whatever Avallone is doing as well. :)

who are you trying to fool here, you're going to spend another $30 as soon as Avallone's kickstarter goes up

I know. These kind of projects need to happen. I wonder if Avellone and Fargo concerted their kickstarter projects so not to cannibalize each other. It would be smart of them to do so.

I'm in for $15, and hopeful.

Why does the pitch video look like something Brian Fargo produced by himself out of his garage?

Haha yeah it does. I think some of the attempts at humor are also a bit... questionable. :p Or forced, rather. It's clear they're trying to take influence from Double Fine's update vids but it doesn't have quite the same flow to it. Maybe they'll get better at it.

If the game's had a year of pre-production, why are there zero details about the actual game plans aside from it being in the vein of the original?

I've only seen this stuff from the RPS interview:

Fargo said:
I think it’s important that we bridge a little bit between what was happening then and now. The first game happened in the south west, Arizona, California, Las Vegas, this part of the world, where you’re desert rangers and you’re trying to restore law and order to a society that’s been devastated by nuclear war. So I don’t want to lose that, I want to stay with that.

I think being desert rangers in this part of the wild west kind of scratches a nerve so I don’t want to lose that, but that said, we also need to take you in some completely different directions that you haven’t seen before, because with all of these games if you feel like you’ve been there, done that, you automatically don’t want to play it, so we’re very cognisant of that.

One of the things that we never really had a chance to do with Wasteland was audio, and I think with audio there’s a tremendous amount you can do to set the mood and the tone, and create trepidation. So we’re really focused on that, and I think Fallout did a great job with that, so we want to take that to the next level where I feel like there hasn’t been a lot done there. So we want to satisfy the old but we’re not going to take it into outer space or anything crazy, we want to stay with some of what was there but show them some things they’ve never seen before.

Fargo said:
We worked on it at InXile for nearly a year, and so we worked through the storyline, what the life of the ranger is, dialogue structure, social skills, party influence, character stats. We worked through quite a lot of things so we’re not starting at ground zero. We pretty much know the templates, the next step after that was to bring all the writers in, and bring the artists in, and really fill out the meat of the world. That’s the costly part and where we didn’t get anywhere.

Fargo said:
You know what’s interesting, and this was why I absolutely loved the forums that we have set up because we’ve been asking people what they like at certain tiers, and things we can do, and we talked about audio, and people said ‘don’t do any audio because we know you’re going to have to cut down on the gameplay if you start having to blow your budget’…. they’re telling us not to waste our money with recording actors’ voices. Forget cinematics, they were just worried about the audio of the voices. But they’re telling us loud and clear their priorities, so we need to hear that stuff. We’re going to have some audio, but I get their point that they don’t want to have us be hamstrung by having every encounter be audio so therefore they can’t get all those little quirky things like we were just talking about.

Dunno about anything more concrete than that though. I assume more info will be pouring out now that the Kickstarter is up and it seems to be a success.

Put Avellone, Sawyer, and Cain on the Obsidian Kickstarter project and name it PLANESCAPE TORMENT ISOMETRIC SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR, in all caps. Hire additional security guards for the Obsidian HQ for the legions of mouth-foamers storming it in an attempt to give everyone there a big hug.

I shed manly tears.

And hope that Wasteland 2 is just the first of many revived games which get a chance with KS.

Pretty sure Avellone and Obsidian are in waiting mode and checking out how this goes while discussing the possibility during company meetings.

Meanwhile, I pledged for a Collector's Edition. Hurray for turn-based WRPGs!

Haha I love that Avellone made a list of the games people most want from him in a Kickstarter project, and something Planescape-related was #1. :p

If interested in the results, the most responses concerned in order of preference (note that there’s likely bias here considering the author of the Twitter and the blog post below):

1. Planescape 2/Planescape Spiritual Successor.

2. An Isometric turn-based/pause RPGs in general.

3. The “other” category – this fell into game suggestions and mechanics and genres that were only suggested by 1 or 2 folks. I read all of these.

4. Make whatever you want, we’ll support you.

Hrm, this is a problem! I think we need three Obsidian kickstarter projects all at once to satisfy everyone ;b

Planescape 2, headed by Chris Avellone.

Baldur's Gate 3: The Black Hound, headed by JE Sawyer (again...).

Arcanum 2, headed by Tim Cain.

Where are all the people suggesting a spiritual Alpha Protocol sequel?

:(

I think people just yearn more for the oldschool style games that don't really see anymore. Notice how #2 on that list is "isometric turn-based RPG." Those are the sorts of games that are more likely to have successful Kickstarters because they tap into nostalgia.

Is there a twitter that counts how much is being made per hour on kickstarter like there was for Double Fine's Adventure??

And could someone link me to that twitter for Double Fine's Adventure..thanks!

Was he a designer on BGIII? Damn, the dude had really bad luck until New Vegas.

I don't think you can make an Alpha Protocol sequel in an old-school style game framework. I'd like to see them try, but an AP removed from voiced dialogue and cutscenes wouldn't be the same.

I'm in the 4th category, by the way. Let MCA et al. do their hearts desire with our money and just marvel at the results. Or maybe they should do a 10 million Kickstarter to buy the Fallout license off Bethesda.

I feel like even if they could do anything with Kickstarter money, they'd still go with an isometric RPG. No doubt the boys at Obsidian would love to make that sort of game again, but publishers are simply unwilling. Now they have a viable method of getting that shit done.

I've never played Wasteland, but I do love its box art.

I will pledge $15 because the idea of a hardcore CRPG in modern times is intriguing. I never got to experience them in their original glory and most have not aged too well, so this may allow me to appreciate this type of game much more.

Yeah, I've got the trust on them to make something in that direction. I'd rather they just straight out did whatever they wanted because I feel like most of Black Isle & co. games are pretty much "complete".

That's me at 12 with BG2... That game taught me English.
Can say the same with Fallout 2 for me :)

first update

WOW!!! You guys are amazing! The fans are really stepping up here with donations and spreading the word. I haven't been more excited to make a game in over a decade. It is a dream to focus all my attention on making a wonderful experience without distraction from outside forces. We will not let you down!

Я не знаю английский язык. Как мне поддержать Ваш проект?

Also for our Russian fans, our buddy Yegor at fallout-archives put together instructions for how to pledge and navigate Kickstarter. If our funding stays at this rate we will be able to localize in Russian. Thanks a ton, Yegor!

I can't wait to see what they announce.

Bad luck? The dude must have run over the only child of a witch or something to have that kind of luck.

Yeah both Baldur's Gate 3 and Fallout 3, cancelled. Pretty harsh.

Tough call. Planescape fans are more passionate; Baldur's Gate fans are more numerous. I'm not sure who it'd be better to pander to to get the most revenue.

So just pander to both. Is there any reason a Forgotten Realms title *couldn't* also link to the Planes? I mean, given the premise of the Planes...

I would like to hear what kind of a game the cancelled New Jersey was. Mitsoda was working on this too.

So Sawyer had 3 big games cancelled with him being a lead designer. Now I understand why he has such an ambivalent attitude to his projects. I remember he said that unless the game is on gold there is a possibility of it being cancelled.

I've posted this elsewhere on GAF, but here's reason #1 why I'm really excited about this:

Reason #2 is because Interplay was the first gaming company I ever worked for.

I don't think a license works with something like Kickstarter. And no, pointing to Wasteland doesn't really work since EA sold it to inXile and they probably thought it was kinda worthless by that point and that's the only reason they sold it in the first place anyway.

I would honestly be more excited about something new anyway :)

The money is not taken from you until the deadline.

Pledging money you don't currently have (or can guarantee), even if it's a month before that money would be taken (thereby giving time to acquire those funds), is a terrible idea. Take that from someone who used to have to float checks every couple of weeks just to survive.

And yes, I AM aware that he could just cancel the pledge, but that seems more of a "gotta remember" course of action, kinda like auto-subscribing porn sites.

On topic, my thought process when I saw this thread: "Nifty, another KS game project. Someone looking to cash in Double-fine style. Wasteland? Where have I heard of that... Oh, Post-apoc, so it's a Fallout clon... wait, isn't this the game Fallout was based on?" *Wikipedia!* "Oh, shit yes."

In for 50. I LOVE my post-apoc, and my Isometric strategy.

Why oh why do game box covers just suck so bad today? Compared to the 70s and 80s paintings for A2600 and computer games, they're just trash most of the time.

It's beautiful, and interplay was solid gold back in the day. i don't think a better publisher with classics to shit ratio has ever existed

Oh, I figured that. Generally, I'd also agree. But a friend of mine made plans along those lines and ended up laid off inside the week.

And that's where I'm coming from :p

I think the crowds for PS:T and BG2 are overlapping enough for this to not be a problem. Just have something for both - Fun and interesting party dialogues for the latter (with a romance or two thrown in) and a deep interesting story in an interesting setting for the latter and you've got everybody's money.
