Wasteland 2 |OT| Explode 'em like a Blood Sausage

Wasteland 2 is the direct sequel to 1988’s Wasteland, the first-ever post-apocalyptic computer RPG and the inspiration behind the Fallout series. Until Wasteland, no other CRPG had ever allowed players to control and command individual party members for tactical purposes or given them the chance to make moral choices that would directly affect the world around them. Wasteland was a pioneer in multi-path problem solving, dripping in choice and consequence and eschewing the typical one-key-per-lock puzzle solving methods of its peers, in favor of putting the power into players’ hands to advance based on their own particular play style.

The Wasteland series' impressive and innovative lineage has been preserved at its very core, but modernized for the fans of today with Wasteland 2. Immerse yourself in turn-based tactical combat that will test the very limits of your strategy skills as you fight to survive a desolate world where brute strength alone isn’t enough to save you. Deck out your Ranger squad with the most devastating weaponry this side of the fallout zone and get ready for maximum destruction with the RPG-style character advancement and customization that made the first Wasteland so brutal. Save an ally from certain death or let them perish – the choice is yours, but so are the consequences.

  • One Size Does Not Fit All: Don't feel like finding the key for a door? Why not try a Rocket Launcher! Basically the same thing... right?
  • Enhanced Classic RPG Game Play: Classic RPG game play ideas updated with modern design philosophies.
  • Decision Making... with Consequences: With both short and long term reactivity to the players choices, every decision matters in the outcome of the story.
  • Huge & Customizable: Dozens of hours of game. Hundreds of characters. Thousands of variations on your Rangers' appearance. Over 150 weapons, dozens of skills, and customizable UI.

"While I have been interpreted to imply that there are no great game designers, clearly Brian Fargo is one of the best. We are thrilled with the release of Wasteland 2, this sequel is LONG overdue, and the inXile team has delivered! Now how are we going to get Shroud of the Avatar finished? Damn you, Brian!" — Richard Garriott/Lord British
"Brian and his team have managed to do the impossible, to recreate the magic that I felt playing Fallout for the first time." — Brian Hicks/Producer DayZ
"inXile can be really proud. Not only did they pave the Kickstarter road for CPRGs, they over-delivered with the end result and crafted a rich experience which will keep me busy for a long time." — Swen Vincke/Creative Director of Divinity: Original Sin
"Along with Bard's Tale, Wasteland was one of the games that made me want to make games. I was privileged that Brian gave me the opportunity to work on Fallout, and I have missed those games. Getting to play Wasteland 2 is like getting to return to your past and finding out that it is still as fun as you remember." — Feargus Urquhart/CEO Obsidian & Lead Designer Fallout 2
"The best aspect of the old school RPGs were the freedom you had to explore the world and how it reacted to your actions. With Wasteland 2, you can immediately see how inXile has brought 'old school' back in the very best way." — Rob Pardo/Lead Designer World of Warcraft

Beautiful. I am supremely excited for this. I love that release is on Friday before the weekend.

Really excited to finally play this, looking forward to the extensive dialogue tree consequences I've been reading about.

Pretty nice OT outside of the image formatting, but don't use imgur for screenshots. They look really compressed.

I can't wait to get into this. I only briefly played the beta when it was first released. They've come a long way since then.

It was a little rushed due to needing an OT asap, but it turned out acceptably. Imgur was used for the full-size for the time being as I have a batch uploader app that made the uploads faster while I was editing it.

Nice OT, subscribed.
the launch version of the game looks pretty nice, too. I'll probably buy it as soon as its out of early access, it will get cheapter then, right?

also: any tipps on party customization or classes/skill point allocation in general?

I have bought the game, but I never understood what type of game it is. Is it primarily an action oriented rpg like Diablo/Torchlight, is it a tactical game with rpg elements like Jagged Alliance/X-COM, or is it a full fledged rpg with lots of dialogue options and complex interactions like Fallout/Planescape Torment/Baldur's Gate II? Or some kind of hybrid?

Probably closest to Fallout, with even more tactical combat.

According to a Steam post the devs have said it will be reduced to USD$40 on release, which is good news for those buying at launch. As for the party customization question someone else may want to give some tips on that.

I don't like how they handled the price reduction on release in Europe. They actually increased the price of digital deluxe recently in EU/UK to make it look like the price drop on release is meaningful. In reality it's $20/5€/£0 price drop compared to what the digital deluxe used to cost in each of those three regions.

So while I already got my copy, I've been promising my friends that on release the price will drop from the 45 euros the digital deluxe used to cost. Well yeah, it will drop a total of five euros. I guess they'll be waiting for (Winter) sales because of the price hike.

Still, other than the pricing issues, tomorrow will be glorious. Hopefully the game is polished enough from start to finish so we don't have to wait for issues to be patched.

Thanks for the OT.

I started the original a few days ago and committed to beat it before staring the sequel.

I can do it!

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
I played about 5 hours of the beta (~2 of them were spent with character creation). I'm psyched for this. Can't wait. Every game that has more non-combat skills than combat focused skills is interesting to me

This one is mine, thanks! :)

EDIT. Or not. It's not transparent :p

Ah, sorry about that :p It's probably not obvious they are avatar badges that can be added to existing avatars, and that is the full-size version in case a user wants to resize it themselves. Here are pre-resized versions at a suitable size:

100pxwidth-redz1kid.png

For anyone who wants to alternatively use them as badges and lack an image editing app, the online Pixlr image editor is decent. Open both your avatar and the badge from URLs or files then Ctrl+A to select all, and copy/paste the badge on top of your avatar. Easy as anything.

Is it worth grabbing the early access version of Wastland 2 now? Or just wait for the final version coming out tomorrow?

Been waiting since middle school for this sequel. Even though they've had to make a lot of concessions to modern audiences, evolving the first game's flow to the expectations of games built in the years since, I really do hope this proves to be a worthy sequel. Not sure if it can live up to twenty-six or so years of anticipation, but I'm sure it will be a great RPG.

I went to the website (I am a Kickstarter) and it says I can get keys. I am at work, so I have not. Is this for the full release as in I can play it when I get home?

I just wanted to redeem my key on Steam but it's already in the list. I guess if you backed a lot of RPGs on kickstarter it's almost certain you have at least one copy of Wasteland 2 :p

It's going to be painful waiting on my LE big box to arrive. Luckily, I have like 3 digital copies of the game tied up over various KS', so lol I'll still be playing the final with you all tomorrow :D
How much cheaper?

OP says the reg edition will be going for $40 vs the digital delux that's been on sale since the game was up for prepurchase on steam EA.
