Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

People are in a state where automatically will take a path to bury "Watch Dogs" and another one to justify "Second Son". It's not a bad way, but is not the objective way.

Okay, I agree with that. 'One looks great, the other looks crap is not a helpful mentality'. However, objective judging aesthetics is not easy in an objective sense unless there is direct comparability (ie same game different platforms). I think visuals are more than just the sum of their parts. I think if you look at the recent footage of boths games, it is easy to see which one looks more impressive. I don't think Watchdogs looks terrible, I just don't think it looks very impressive. It very much looks like something that can be well approximated on last gen, just with higher obect density, greater draw distance etc. Modelling won't change much. It looks like it is in the same bracket as Ground Zeroes to me, although lighting in that game is probably better.

Endless made a gif just for you Kitty :)

Don't worry, there is not much difference between the two.

If you can't see any difference well your either not sitting close to your monitor or are colorblind because it is a huge difference for sure.

This thread and situation proves why publishers are afraid to try anything different/new.

On the whole, the gaming community today is a big mess. Full of entitled people who don't know shit about what goes on in terms of developing a game. There are people out there who have slaved away on this product for the last few years only to end up with a reaction like this, and the game isn't even out yet. It's unfair on them to say the least.

This is why we can't have nice things.

You're so right...

Some CG artist at Free Radical probably worked hard on Haze too but it doesn't mean that people have to automatically enjoy it. Any form of media can and will be judged by the consumer as to whether it meets their standard of a good value.

As usual, the whole derivative-ass entitlement spiel holds absolutely no water at all.

I've never been into Watch Dogs, but it's certainly tougher selling games these days compared to the past. One small slip up on the internet will spread like wildfire, and can cost you mind share bigtime.

Good thing no one ever makes short-sighted decisions based on limited evidence!

Me too. Until then, I think is a huge amount of overreaction going on. Plenty of people are still coming into this thread and taking one look at the very misleading gif in the OP and making up their minds there and then.

There are even elements of the recent footage that look like an upgrade rather than a downgrade.

This thread is ridiculous.

please specify which elements you are talking about. I have specified the clearly downgraded elements I am talking about.

Every shot in the 2012 reveal whether it's day/night/raining or not is filled with detail and life in the environment like in that gif. Every shot in the story trailer does not have any such details. Other games are stuffed full of the kind of atmospheric effects the original reveal had in spades. It's what blew me away at the reveal.

Shadow Fall and Tomb Raider are full of such things. Footage of Infamous is full of such things. I'm sure other next gen games have such touches. AC4 has more (though not many) of that type of thing.

Even just footage of someone walking down an alley in the first reveal had more life in the environment than ANY of the footage in the story trailer.

Other things look great in the footage. I presume lighting is dynamic (because hacking). The environment is nicely detailed. Characters and textures are good. Particle effects while maybe a step down, are still decent on explosions, tire smoke, car crashes and that type of thing.

But all the environmental effects that brought the world to life in the 2012 footage are missing completely from this footage.

If that's not a clear and apparent downgrade, I don't know what is.

But I didn't say that there wasn't a downgrade - just that his comparison gifs were badly chosen.

Maybe when more sites publish their hands on with the game we might get more of a opinion on the visual state of things. They went hands on with the PS4 version I believe.

yep, agreed... unreal honestly... the negativity and hate is a god damned shame to see. I don't blame devs from keeping shit to themselves and staying far away from twitter and boards like this anymore.

I was quoted regarding this gif:

http://i.minus.com/iAHxbvGbhY0Mz.gif[/IMG

which is what I'm describing as static in comparison to the reveal.

It just takes a little bit of comprehension. My bad.[/QUOTE]

It does look more static than the reveal, yes. But further in that video you can see a leaf and a can rolling down a road (lol, it's not much, i agree). I just think (and hope) that it's a sunny day with very little wind. But i'm all for more moving vegatation like in AC4 or TR DE.

The Bridge part however, does not look as good as it did. I can't even see those lions statues. Either it's a different bridge, the textures aren't loading or they removed a lot of detail in that scene.

The fuck is wrong with people.

I don't like Penny Arcade, but they did make the truest picture about the internet:

Yes Ubisoft and other publishers should be held accountable for trying to mislead their audience. But some people just love this whole situation and want to riot.

I would like to know if they were overly ambitious with Watch Dogs a few years ago or that it was Yves Guillemot rubbing his hands together laughing manically when they showed the first demo.

Watch Dogs, as it stands, isn't a terrible looking game. But coming down from this:

They've brought any criticism they get on themselves.

And it doesn't seem like the hardware is incapable, or that good graphics and day footage are mutually exclusive:

Watch Dogs is missing some vibrancy that just makes it look visually dull seemingly often. Certainly too many times for selected B-Roll footage.

Don't start with this...it's simple if you mislead your consumer you can expect a backlash not matter what.

I would suggest dropping the attack on the Ubisoft Pr lady. We do not want her to lose her job over this. She is making some claims that are factually incorrect. We know she is wrong. That should be good enough for most of us on GAF.
Agree. There no reason for us to push her over the edge that will make her lose her job.

And to be fair, Outlast doesn't have good graphics they're okay but that's it. But I don't agree with her about the downgrade, judging from the trailers/footage shown.

But I didn't say that there wasn't a downgrade - just that his comparison gifs were badly chosen.

my point is, that you'd struggle to find a gif missing those kinds of effects in the 2012 footage, and you can't make a gif with them in the 2014 footage, because it doesn't contain any.

every external shot had them in 2012. no external shot has them in 2014. I'm not sure which bits you want him to gif as a result. that's all I'm saying. there ISN'T footage from the 2014 version we've seen yet that contains such effects. they just aren't there at all. so no gif has them.

I really hope they're still in there, but there's no evidence yet that they are.

Let's also not forget that misleading the consumer was/is basically the Ubisoft MO. They were one of the biggest offenders with regards to bullshots.

Right, but we don't know that, because the only current-gen only title they have announced, The Division, could be complete bullshit.

It could be complete BS. But it's just as valid to say that it could turn out fine. I'm only going off of what's been shown and said about the game.

We haven't even seen recent footage where its rainy. Maybe it looks just like that?

even when it wasn't rainy, the environment was much more alive with small touches in that original footage, than in any moment in this footage. again, hopefully it's just a terrible choice of footage, but going from every shot full of atmosphere to NO shots... it's jarring as fuck.
