Watch_Dogs |OT| PS4 would probably melt trying to do this

I Wanna Be The Guy

U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
You kinda can in the game. Yesterday the debs were streaming the game. They were able to distract a guard who wanted to be an adult film star by pretending to be a porn producer.

I take it that was just a scripted thing during a mission? I'm talking about that kind of thing in a more open and free way for just random people in the world. But that does sound cool nevertheless.

I'd also like to know this and see just how different it is. Quite a few things are different general gameplay wise there anyway. For example in that demo basic hacking of the traffic lights was on the wheel instead of just a press of the square button. It doesn't look like rescuing people trapped in their cars during a firefight is in the full game either?
I've seen people say on other forums that being able to rescue people stuck in cars is in the game.

It's a side mission apparently according to Morin.
Awesome, good to hear. Looking forward to seeing what's different about it.

There was a post in this thread that said its still in there.

I managed to grab the game at a local mom and pop store. Funnily enough they wouldn't give me the slip cover and booklet until Tuesday...but whatever.

The game itself is interesting. I enjoy the hacking quite a bit, it seems very varied. I'm not a huge fan of the driving though. Some cars are better than others, but for the most part I never quite feel in enough control. It's a little twitchy. I'm super early in on the game, literally popped it in an hr or so ago. Heading into the mission after "Big Brother".

As far as graphics are concerned, much has been made about the downgrade, rightfully so in my opinion. The game still looks good, but it's not mind blowing. It shines at night during the rain showers, but it doesn't really pop overall. Not particularly interesting to look at.

The lighting and reflections is nowhere close

Thats how it looks in motion, but obviously sharper because the E3 trailer is compressed to hell, don't know how some was claiming it had better textures when it was too compressed to tell.

I don't think I've ever seen talk of piracy less subtle than this. By the way my friend just got his copy - interested to see how it runs for him.

I cannot get over how bad the lighting is during the daytime.

I think this game looks really nice even in the day time, especially in motion. I'd say it's probably the best looking open world game behind Second Son, but I think the world definitely feels more dense and detailed than Infamous did. More alive I guess, though I hate to use that word. But I don't really notice graphical problems in games unless people point them out to me. Animations are far more important to my immersion, I think. That said I really do like the visuals. I dare you not to feel dirty walking down an alley in the middle of the night. Combined with the density, the ability to listen to music on foot, and the profiler, this is one of the first open world games where walking down the street doesn't get boring after like a minute. There is just a ton going on.

Also I'd like to give my two cents on the driving, since I've had time to get used to it. I don't see many problems with it, and I even like it. I think it'll be a matter of taste just like any other openworld game, and it does take some getting used to. Some people will love the more arcadey feel, others won't. Arcadey doesn't mean weightless in this regard, as the cars smash and drift around satisfactorily. In this respect, it mostly just means that the cars take a bit more punishment. J turns are fairly easy depending on the cars your driving, you can overturn and spin out, some cars handle better than other cars, etc. You definitely have to brake before turns or you will end up crashing into shit and missing your turn. Generally I'd say that it's similar to Driver: San Fran. Way better than Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row driving, but I still like GTA 4 and 5's driving the best. This comes with one caveat though; motorcycles in this game are amazing and better than in every open world game I've played, and are pretty much all I drive. It's the perfect vigilante. You can cut through traffic easily and without fear of murdering a bunch of pedestrians while you're at it. You can cut through raised bollards as the cops get wrecked right behind you, etc. They are very maneuverable and just feel right, I guess.

Blackouts are awesome, and the hacking is fun, but I do wish there were more types of hacks. Maybe WD2. Though when given the option to hack into an enemy compound or sneak in, I am always heading inside with my silenced pistol.

Now a few of my gripes with this game has to do with the police system. For the most part, it's great- the police chases are thrilling and sometimes challenging, the hiding and detection mechanics are awesome (think the first scene in Drive), the phone system is cool- but there are some glaring issues. In Chicago, the town is full of cameras that are supposed to try to stop crime right? Well how come the only time the cops ever come is when someone calls? Shouldn't they see me on camera murdering tons of people, or getting in an explosive gang battle? For instance, people in cars do not call 911. So, on the highway, you can literally walk down the lanes headshotting people out of their cars to your hearts content, and the cops will almost never show up. In addition, there are very few patrolling cops. Though once you actually get into a chase, they're a blast. Except for the badass sniper helicopters. Fuck you helicopters.

Another thing I want to rant about is the smallish range the game gives you when chasing people. A few times I could still see (though he was far away) and was actively chasing a criminal and the game failed the crime detection mission (which isn't really a big deal). It's just funny because I can eventually catch up with him after the mission failed and kill him. It's the same type thing with car chases. I think the range is too short. Luckily there is none of that bullshit where you can't blow up a car you're following because the game has decided it's not time yet.

Aiden's animation and movement feel and look great. This game sort of expands on the freerunnning that Sleeping Dogs did, and chasing a criminal through a suburb full of back yards is just really cool to play. This game just does animation really well and I'm not sure it's something I can describe in an acceptable way. You just have to feel it I guess.

Stealth is great as well. The enemies are a bit dumb but I think they strike a nice balance between fun and difficult. It's pretty standard Splinter Cell stuff, with the addition of hacking. There's usually a nice open playground to mess around in and it's fun to hack all the cameras before you strike to determine the best course of action. The takedown animations are awesome, and the animations that Aiden has while in stealth mode are so cool. Though, sometimes it's fun to just rig a bunch of IEDs to a van and drive through the front door, guns blazing.

Which brings me to the shooting, which I especially like, and would probably go so far to say it's the best shooting in an open world game that I've played. The combination of Aiden's ease of movement and tight aiming definitely place it a cut above GTA V's shooting. I never lost a gun fight because of my aim-usually because I was out flanked. A problem I kept having (I'm playing on Realistic mode) was that, for the criminal convoy missions for example, I would try to start a gun fight in the middle of the street. This is fine at first, but the enemies are really good at flanking you and shooting you in the sides, not to mention the reinforcements that arrive. I had to think more strategically. I learned to lure enemies into dense alleys and sidestreets with lots of cover and avenues of flanking them.

My favorite and most recent example was this convoy assault mission where I had to incapacitate the leader, not kill him. There goes my typical "rig up explosives and destroy them with a grenade launcher" idea. For this particular one, there were 5 cars and the leader was in the second car. Their course set them to go over a raiseable bridge(the kind that elevated the whole bridge, not the one that splits the bridge in two), so I set up. I place a bunch of explosives on the bridge so that anyone on the bridge would be toast, then I waited. When the convoy came, I let the first 2 cars clear the bridge, and then I hacked it so it raised. The 3 cars behind were stranded, and I detonated the bridge explosives to take care of most of the leader's guards. I quickly grenade launched the lead guard car, took out the driver of the VIP's car with a headshot, and then took the leader down a baton swing to the throat. It was awesome, and I think that's a great example of this game being a "you get what you put into it" type of game.

I'm not too far into the story but so far it's fine. At first I didn't really like Aiden and his stupid face, but after some new clothes, a haircut, and some more time with him, he kind of grows on you. He can be badass sometimes (in cutscenes, when I'm controlling him he is always badass ;) ) and has some good one liners, and I like his dynamic with Clara. His sister and his nephew I could care less about, and that's unfortunate, because I think the game really wants me to care about him haha. The missions are pretty cool most of the time (Ubisoft stop making me tail people pls :( ) and have decent variety., and the soundtrack (not the licensed stuff, which is meh) is pretty awesome, reminiscent of Drive, Mass Effect, GTAV, and maybe some Hotline Miami for good measure. There are some really awesome moments accompanied by some cool music that I won't spoil, but they made me smile.

This is a great vigilante/realistic super hero simulator. I take my games slow, walking around, looking at everything, planning all my moves, and I think that has added to my enjoyment of the game. I'm not too far in though, due to my playstyle, and it could nosedive pretty soon. But the core mechanics work nicely, and ultimately the game is fun to play. Take heed though that this is all the opinion of someone still in the honeymoon stage with this game, so it's underlying flaws may not be exposed yet, but I think I've relayed all the flaws I can currently think of. Now back to playing. Hope the rest of you get to play soon, but it's worth the wait, in my opinion. Thanks for reading.

Nice write up Gaz, can't wait until Tues or whenever it turns up!

Does anyone have any multiplayer impressions?
I'm looking forward to that part too.

1) I love this though. The thing I absolutely despise about open world games is that when you do something wrong, the cops are instantly on you. Here you are given a chance to stop them from coming.

2) Is it as bad as AC4's amount of tailing missions?

3) Nice. Love that type of music.

The depth of field is mostly gone, or at least turned down, and that was part of what made the game look so awesome, I think. Though it now looks more colorful and the image looks a little cleaner. Idk. Some of the things actually look better in the bottom pic.

2) Not at all. So far there has only been one, and it was short and you had to sneak and take out enemies along the way.

So how does changing the jacket etc work? Can you only do that if you pre-order a certain version of the game. Or is there customization in the base game?

What happened to the game?

The PS4 reveal wasn't even PS4... it was PC. The animation director said they didn't get the specs for the PS4 until the reveal, and they were showing what they hoped the PS4 could do. E3 2013 was running on a PS4 dev kit

Also... those custom messages you can put on billboards....

Can't wait to screw with people using that in the 1 v 1 hacking stuff.

It's the lighting and lack of shadows which makes the second pic look like shit.

Well to be fair, I think they those pics were taken at different times of day. The second pic looks to be overcast, even. But yes, the game was downgraded, I'm not really one to argue any differently. As for why it happened, I think that's fairly obvious.

You only get one extra jacket for preordering, I think.

There is a large amount of different jacket, sweater, hat, and hood combinations, in all sorts of colors. The combinations are premade, but there is a ton. And they all keep the same basic look.

Rescuing people is in the game.

I was in a firefight with police and they let me rescue people trapped in cars

Regardless of how it all played out, the game just doesn't look as good as it should IMO. I'm straight up serious when I say the lighting in GTA5 looks better on drastically weaker hardware.

I miss the dof. I don't even know why they removed the parallax mapping, even PDZ had it when the Xbox 360 launched. It is a very cheap feature (cheap on the hardware). Bizarre decisions by ubi.

lighting took the biggest hit though.

Hope to see more posts like Gaz's instead of the tired downgrade talk (yes, I know it looks worse now - no, I don't still care).

I don't want to armchair moderate, but would it be possible to have downgrade talk separated into a different thread?

I use OTs to gauge quality, find out more about the game and get impressions from other users but it's been largely impossible in this one because there's such a blatant vested interest from some to guide the discussion towards negativity. It just isn't useful for anyone.

The downgrade is in every watch dogs thread. Hopefully when the game comes out, we will be talking more about it and its content, and not just its visuals.

Game really does remind me of sleeping dogs in many ways, mostly the visual style and how parcour the protag is. the open world bits is kinda meh, and like far cry 3, the gang/outposts are the best parts of the game imo. tons of ways to approach from stealth shooting to using traps and what not.

Once you get past the visuals its a fine enough game,

7ish to 8ish out of 10 so far Part 1 finish.

Has the turning online off wipes all your stats thing been clarified? Is that still actually the case? I'd like to take part in the hacking other players/getting hacked, but I know there are going to be times I'm just going to want to play the game and be left alone.

People are comparing a really bad video capture with a direct screen cap. They might look exactly the same except for the missing tesselation/bricks.

Gaz, one point that might be why the camera system doesn't work in bringing the cops to you, is that Aiden doesn't really show up to them. Whenever you see yourself through the camera, you get an ID error. Could be why a camera system won't bring the cops after you(guesswork, it's probably an oversight on ubi's part).
