Way of the Samurai 4 will be released on PC in less than 2 weeks

It's always a bad decision to tie your game to the framerate. Rendering and game logic shouldn't affect each other.

It's a bad practice, definitely, but it's very easy for me to say that from the perspective of someone who has been playing PC games my whole life.

I have a little bit of sympathy for Japanese developers in the late 2000s that haven't had much exposure with PC gaming and have made games their entire careers without needing to worry about fluctuating framerates. I didn't like the suggestion that they aren't learning and adapting based on ports of old games.

Hmm... can anybody break down the combat in this to a fan of the character action game genre? Like a DMC, Bayonetta, MGR, etc. fan.

Ever played Onimusha? It's kinda like that. It's a bit floaty and goofy, but decent combos can still happen. You have "styles" which allow you to learn new moves and defensive techs. You can break guard by throwing, go for sweeps, charge attacks, do easy command throws, etc.

It's a pretty fun system. Some moves do more damage than they should (looking at you, sweep and stab), but on harder difficulties it's about learning the range of your weapon and the range of each move.

Some of the styles have a different function, like the Night Crawling Style that's linked to the minigame, so it's effectively useless, but most are pretty fun.

Don't expect DMC level depth, but it's certainly no slouch.

Nice, this is what I was looking for, thank you.

The third game is the only title where you can play at your own pace. Certain events move the story, and while some happen at certain times of day, the game doesn't progress until a key event is triggered. This allows you to do many sidequests and find partners to team up with, so long as you don't trigger an event that might hinder it.

All of the other main games are focused much more on time. You are essentially playing the games on a clock, and core events have to be done within that time frame. Essentially, to do most of what the other titles offer, you have to play the game multiple times, for you don't have the time to do it all, and this isn't even considering the branching paths in the story. 2 and 4 are especially tied to this flow of gameplay.

Samurai Western, a spin-off to the series, is literally a linear stage-to-stage game, where you can unlock bonus stages by replaying certain ones. It's a weird game, mixing Japanese and English voices between the samurai and cowboys.

Third game was my first, and so holds a special place in my heart. Love that game so much, probably even moreso because I went in with average expectations, and it surprised the hell out of me. Haven't played much of 2, but I did play a translated version of 1 on PSP. I'd probably rank the games (that I've played properly) as 3>4>1.

This is all from memory, I haven't played WotS1-3 in a good while, so I'll just post various thoughts of what I can remember, since you've played the first game you have an idea of how it goes and maybe someone else will find it useful. All the games are best summarised as a small scale samurai sandbox meets a CYOA story. The true ending for each game requires many playthroughs to understand the flow of events and manipulate the outcome toward a favourable conclusion (this generally involves getting the various factions to stop fighting each other and face the true threat).

huuuge thanks for these posts by the way!

I think it's solid, though not exceptional.

Let's start out with the bad:
  • M/KB controls are, well, there, and at least you can use the mouse in menus unlike some other ports, but really, don't play this without a gamepad.
  • Locked 30 FPS.

The good:
  • Arbitrary resolutions are supported.
  • Graphics performance is great. No, seriously, at 5k on a 970 it just uses 45% of my GPU for locked 30 FPS.
  • Frame delivery is very consistent (likely as a result of the great performance). So although it's 30 FPS, I find it playable.
  • The game is pretty interesting and unique.

Here's 2 screenshots downsampled from 5k:

Do you get an issue with a lack of bloom in the skybox? I believe the PS3 version used it to hide the ugly texture, but it seems to be toned down or missing entirely in certain scenes here.

Missing some specular effects on the skins too.

Preordered this yesterday.
Can't wait to play it!

Ross, any chance we'll see Way of the Samurai 3 get ported to steam if this does well?

It's a VERY open ended action adventure game. Players start the game as a nameless Samurai who arrives in a fictional Japanese port town in the middle of the 19th century, just as foreigners start to influence Japanese life. Upon arrival, the player can choose to align with different factions (foreign powers, Shogunate forces or rebels who want to expel the foreigners) This non linear approach also translates to the gameplay, as players are able to experiment with different fighting styles, character customization options (though the character's gender is always male) important decision making and also ten different endings.

Edit: you can also unlock a female character option if you beat the game, forgot to add that.
Sound interesting, I might have to consider getting this.

I'll even buy Samurai Western if that means we get Tenchu games
I'M IN

Pre-ordered. GAF has done me no wrong so far when it comes to games I've only bought because people here convinced me to. Excited to play this, the concept sounds neat as hell.

Hopefully it does well on PC, since someone said Akiba's Trip didn't. I didn't do my part with that one, I have to admit, the PS4 version was enough to me.

This is ironic considering how popular PC games were in the 80's and 90s in Japan.
Only into the 2000s it seemed to start decline and that is when Falcom too ran into trouble.

These days too though, there still is a market for PC games in Japan. Steam has many Japanese users.

Also I bought the game. 15$ is extremely reasonable. Unlike KOEI

Wait, they made another WoTS type game after 4?

Kinda. From what I understand, it's a new developer (Acquire was purchased by GungHo at some point in the last few years), and it's pretty much a reboot with a new name and style. Looks more anime-ish, which I'm not a fan of. They made separate versions for PS3 and Vita.

I'm glad I noticed this thread. I've had this on my wishlist since it was listed on Steam, but didn't notice it was available for preorder. $14.99 is a fantastic price too. Hopefully this does well enough for them to take a look at some of the past games.

Personally, as unlikely as it is, I'd love to see the first game released again. I love all of the games, but that one was something special. I need to see how it runs in PCSX2.

Haven't tried 1, but 2 runs very well in PCSX2, barring some visual bugs.

I would say Ghostlight did a pretty good job with the port. I had some small crashes near the end of the beta-test, but seems that was because of an old build of W10, that somehow let the game crash when I started it in Steams BPM.

The game runs really well. I can write down some more impressions later, but it was quite a journey. Ghostlight really did the best they could with this port and you can see it. It runs really well and far better on PC than on consoles (where it had big performance problems).
Ghostlight Games itself couldnt really fix some of the design decisions of the game e.g. sometimes the game feels kinda rough around the edges, but I think the PC-version is the version people should choose, since it is really the best available.

Really a good job (if you can look over the 30fps lock).

I am really glad we have publishers like Ghostlight Games that are not afraid to port titles as WotS so PC-players can enjoy it.

5 more hours!

i was starting to think the game would go into limbo and never come out after previous release dates started slipping by.

An official thread sure would be nice, I would've loved to make it, but won't be home from work any time soon. If there isn't an OT by Saturday, I will try to put one together.

If that's okay with you, I can throw something together now and when you have time you can send me any changes or additions you want.

Edit: there's only two hours to release so I went ahead and made it: Here
