For me it's Portal , I also love that a game that's focused on gameplay & taking advantage of controller features like Astro Bot is getting high praise . I'm happy that a MR headset is finally mainstream thanks to Quest 3 even if it will be some more years before it's great . I'm happy that Sega is looking into cloud gaming because I feel they will use it like the Arcade era & actually make games for the cloud that are not playable at home yet.


Happy that we're moving closer to the Digital Locker era but I worry about the hit the industry will take in the transition

My two forver games are at a very good spot right now.

Gt7 has been doing brilliantly since the last year or two and is evergreen. The gameplay is so good, each car feels distinct and has its own characteristics. The maps are super accurate to real life, the physics are excellent and the game is just fun to play. Not to mention how excellently they have rendered each car and all the small details they have.

The latest expansion to Helldivers 2 added everything I needed to the game. Illuminati are a joy to play against. It boggles me how one single game has 3 different factions that are completely distinct with their own advantages and disadvantages, require the player to play differently( strategy, loadout and playstyle included) and are still fun to play against. It's like having 3 different games in one.

Honestly have been enjoying this two so much that besides astrobot, I haven't really completed or played much of any other game recently. Have also started Indiana Jones( reach vatican, which caused my laptop to crash, haven't returned to it since) which seems to be good but I haven't played enough to really form an opinion.

Finally, excited for next year as well. There are a lot of games I am interested in releasing next year and honestly I doubt I will have enough time to play all the games I am interested in

Main thing in gaming that I'm happy about is VR gaming. I'm also extremely happy about the rise of Chinese and Korean developers in the industry because I love the type of games they are making. Way better than the trash we keep getting from most Western devs nowadays.

Astrobot has also made me a very happy gamer this year. I love the fact it won GOTY and showed Sony that they need to get back to their Japanese roots in gaming.

Sometimes, I'll randomly pick up the DS and play something and feel like all is right in the world. I'm happy I have a pretty good collection of older games, because man - the design mentality behind this stuff is worlds apart from what tends to release now. It's good stuff.
 
Im just happy I got to play Cyberpunk 2077 5 times and it was and is my number 1 game of all time. Now Im waiting for the sequel and not really that much else that excites me in the upcoming games, never was really a fan of gta games and Witcher 4 aint with my man Geralt so eh.
 
I am super grateful that even with all that is going on with other companies/devs, that we still have so many devs that care for what gaming represents and still pump great games one after the other, I am currently playing Unicorn Overlord and it has been amazing til now

God bless Vanillaware and all they have done over the years

I finally got around to playing the Castlevania "Metroidvanias". SOTN truly was worth the hype. I just started Circle of the Moon and it's a worthy successor. I love the little nods to previous games while still being a new thing.

I've still got 2 more Castlevania Advance games I haven't played yet, so I'm set for awhile.
 
I'm happy someone did such a great thread 😀. Happy to see my kids smile full of wonder playing Astrobot. Happy that VR modding is letting me play all best games. Happy that at 50, after 45 years of gaming, I still enjoy and love the medium
 
I like the fact that so many games these days are so fucking stupid that I no longer desire to play them and have more money for other hobbies.
 
VR/MR/AR or whatever they call it now. I've had my headset for around 4 months and I still use it a lot. I think the only flatscreen game that I've played regularly since I got it is Helldivers 2 and even then I play it projected to my headset. Also Cyberpunk 2077 in VR. I can't wait until GPUs are actually powerful enough to play CP2077 in VR completely maxed. It's still a looker without raytracing but it's something I'm looking forward to in the future. Maybe in 3 more GPU generations or so. I'm also looking forward to the next gen of handheld PCs. I might actually consider a GPD device as 2025's big tech purchase since I only allow myself one thing to splurge on each year.

And I can't wait for Monster Hunter Wilds.

Jokes aside, I'm really glad MachineGames kicked it with Indiana Jones, they have been such a good studio full of talented people for the longest time and they deserve every success that comes their way. Not that some of us needed reminding since the times of Escape From Butcher Bay.

I'm happy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 finally released, albeit not completely spanking shiny...but WHO THE FUCK CARES! :nougat_gfwse: It's part of the Stalker experience.

Really happy The Zone came back in it's current irradiated form, it's breaking the bank, people are loving it.

Happy GSC kicked it out of the park, these people deserved it. They've been working through a genocidal war of destruction, even losing devs KIA, and somehow managed and still manage to kick it in the balls.

Hell, happy even the Russian FSB, former KGB, took STALKER 2 success as such insolence and danger they mounted an operation to review bomb it. :goog_grinning_sweat:

I am really enjoying my steam deck that I got in the summer, playing games that are gameplay focussed like vampire survivors and Balatro and Hades has been awesome
 
I'm happy for all the controversies in the industry because that's almost the only thing I find interesting with gaming nowadays.
 
Personally, I'm having a lot of fun with my backlog. We can get a lot of great game with huge discount that are holding up really well.
 
Just good games.

This year i got to play Stellar Blade, Yakuza 8, FF7 Rebirth and Astrobot.

Next year i'm looking forward to Pirate Yakuza, Ghost of Yotei and DS2.

Also, funny to see grown ass men in their 40's losing their shit over Astrobot winning GOTY.

Just happy about all the great games out there. Just started Ys 8. First time trying the series out and already loving it. So much to play and I just have no time.

I know this is tongue-in-cheek but legitimately I am glad GAF allows dissent and disagreement. If you've spent ANY time over at the _other_ place, merely mentioning the name of certain games will get you banned. Dissent from the accepted points-of-view will get you banned. Pointing out any hypocrisy will get you banned. GAF just lets us argue about this dumb shit til the sun comes up.

Anyway, 2024 was kind of a rough year overall but finished pretty strong. Having a ton of fun with STALKER 2, Indy and PoE2 right now.

Sounds like too many emotional, pathetic and weak people run the "other place".

And to stay on topic, I'm thankful I experienced PS3/360 era and below. It's only been downhill since then.
 
I have been gaming since Atari 2600, I have owned majority of consoles since then I can say that gaming these days is in a really good spot (not perfect).

I like that games are generally run really great vs 5th gen and 7th gen and I would say it runs way better than 8th gen also.

We are spoiled for choice, so once you know what types of games you enjoy you can find plenty of options to choose from.

As you mentioned OP, I love Portal and Dualsense and they have been major highlight in this gen for me.. really amazing.

Also I feel 3D audio is not appreciated enough, Returnal, Silent Hill uses are really fantastic and I can't simply go back to stereo audio.

I've been playing Enderal. It's a massive full conversion Skyrim mod with a standalone release on Steam, and I'm over 100 hours in now. It's really good.
Soon I'd like to try Entropy: Zero, a pair of Half-Life 2 mods. The second one's apparently rather acclaimed.

Mostly agree. But modern platforms have also given us Destiny 2, BG 3 and RDR2, which are some of the greatest games I've ever played. The PS2 era was peak creativity and output from the industry overall though. We got 7 games from Rockstar proper (developed, not just published) that gen. Now we get 1 game per gen.
 
Played some great games this year, mostly indie games and even some AA(A) games. I'm happy with my PS5, with my PC and Steam Deck.

love this hobby. So many brilliant games.
 
I almost never buy games on release, but in 2025 I'm happy there might be 2-3 games which will make do so: Tempest Rising, Assetto Corsa Evo and GTAVI.
 
Lately, I have been super into retro gaming and emulation. As in, I am still working my way through FFVII Integrade and Indy and Stalker 2, but they share equal - if not lesser - space with retro stuff that I'm doing.

Retroachievements is the website of the gods. It breathes new life into old games. It makes them feel fresh and fun and alive again. Achievement hunting in THPS-THPS4 has been like a perfect, blissful gaming elixir. I can sit and maniacally grind through achievement lists in the arcade version of Burger Time, or Symphony Of The Night, or Radiant Silvergun. I can play Pokemon Emerald with a whole new set of priorities and objectives. It plugs perfectly into Retroarch, or PCSX2, or Duckstation,and you get notifications, bells, and a brilliant community.

Twin Galaxies also exists for those times when Retroachievements is not enough. That's a place I go when I want to know how shit I am at video games, and it's extremely fun. Voting on people's record attempts, viewing people's attempts to be etched into the annals of history as immortal gaming warriors, and getting a real score-based indication on how I stack up against the world record holders. Do I want to know if I compare to the rest of the world in the Commodore 64 version of Yie Ar Kung Fu? Yes, I very much do.

Fightcade is another retro gaming app which lets me know just how shit I am at video games, this time by allowing full multiplayer access to a broad range of fighting games - both arcade and console - and allowing me to compete for ELO by having my brains kicked in by the most autistic members of the FGC. Insanely fun.

Speedrun is where I go to find out just what the autistic mind is capable of when truly released from the suffocating shackles of polite society. I spent three hours the other day trying to beat the speedrunning record for the Commodore 64 version of Ghostbusters. I failed. It was unbelievably fun. More fun than Concord. More fun than Genshin Impact. More fun than whatever AAA slop Phil Spencer is shitting in my direction.

Launchbox is a frontend for your emulated retrogaming library, but one of the lesser known features is the arcade score leaderboards. It's simple, but effective. There are all time, yearly, and monthly leaderboards for a few hundred games, and you compete to be the best. No frills, no badges, just you putting in your three letter name on the high score table and waiting to be immortalised in the halls of the digitally gifted. Do I really want to spend three hours trying to beat some random's score in Bomb Jack? Fuck yeah, I do.

So, since modern gaming sucks so much horse cock, retro gaming is no longer just a novel side project for me to play around with when I'm feeling bored and nostalgic. No, it is on the same level as the rest of my gaming diet, often exceeding modern gaming and is driven by a whole range of platforms, services, and communities which take video games that I loved - from the era before gaming became a microtransaction and battle pass infested scam - and turns them into new, compelling, and unbelievably fun experiences.

Highly recommended. That's what I'm happy about in gaming right now, OP.
 
Genuinely had an amazing year playing games this year. A lot of variation and Japanese games have blown me away across all platforms.

Then an awesome end to the year with a surprise in indiana jones.

Then, I appreciate GAF. Everyones awesome.

Looking forward to 2025 and the switch 2 as Nintendo is and has always been there for me as an incredible palate cleanser and they always deliver on gameplay that I enjoy.

Also, looking forward to seeing more of games like ghost of yotei, avowed hopefully a release date for fable. Loads more tbh. I think there's a lot to look forward to.
 
Happy? Marvel Rivals is the most fun ive had in a MP game in years, im having more fun than i did with helldivers 2....just insanely fun.

OW is so boring to me now lol

Hard times for some western devs but as a consumer I'm happy that there's still good videogames coming out.

And this year in particular has been great. Many cool JRPGs, got to finally play Dragon's Dogma 2, and Path of Exile 2 has been a surprise for me and has given me many hours of fun.

A toast, for hot chicks and fun videogames.
 
I'm happy that more Resident evil games that are on the way! from the leaks for Re9 its going back to Re4 style gameplay (not re7 or Re8 1st person) hopefully
 
Many amazing new dev teams keeping the fires going while many Western AAA lost their talent, chasing dumb as fuck trends, and are fossilizing showing all its cracks.,

Seriously the future of the industry and the hobby is fine with the talent going around in the indie space, eastern teams, and some AAs

I am down for old titans falling and new studios rising.The moment you look past the shit going on in AAA in the west and see the rest of the hobby, there is a lot to be excited and optimistic for.
