I had a similar situation last year with someone drunk and shouting outside my house late at night accusing me of hitting my gf (despite the fact I've been single for 5 years). He kept banging and pulling at my front door despite me shouting at him to go away. I eventually opened it and as he tried to get into my house I wrestled with him and managed to throw him on his arse in to the middle of the street where he stayed until the police showed up and took him home. Moral of the story is: ain't no fucker getting into my house if I don't want them to. Drunk or not drunk.
At the very least OP knows not to open the door. I don't even answer my phone if it's not from someone I know, if it's important they can leave a message.

This is one of those weird things that everyone should have a plan for even if it isn't terribly likely to actually happen to you. It's really hard to turn away a stranger at your door in apparent need, especially if you don't have your common sense hat on because it's the middle of the night. When I was around 21, my then-girlfriend and I were awakened in the middle of the night by two kids in their mid-teens who claimed they were stuck away from home and needed to use a phone (this was 2001 so it was not unreasonable to claim you didn't have your own phone). They used the phone and left, they were never a threat, but it wasn't long after that I thought to myself, "man, if they'd had a weapon or a bigger guy hiding next to the door when I opened it, they could have done whatever they wanted and I wouldn't have been able to stop them. Heck I could have placed the call for them without even letting them in." If only I'd had that thought BEFORE I opened the door. Lesson learned, thankfully without any harm to anyone, and that seems to be the case for the op. I'm glad it ended well.

Glad you and yours are safe OP. You have a kind heart to not act belligerently in such an obviously dangerous situation. Yeah, don't open the door in the future in a situation like this, but, I think that's the only reflection that has to be made about the experience. If that guy can pull himself together, he'll be incredibly thankful to you in the future.

I probably would not have opened the door but i think you handled the remaining situation pretty well. You evaluated his demenaor and formed a plan based on it. You remained calm and de-escalated the situation without any major incidents. There would probably be a few less unneccesary deaths happening in the world if more people had your attitude. Im glad theres still people like you out there that are willing to give a helping hand to thier fellow man. One day i may need some real help and i hope there is someone like you around to assist me instead of immediatly shooting me in the face.

i've very drunkenly gone into two of my other flatmate's rooms thinking they were mine before. in both cases my flatmates were woken up because i was super loud and the first time it happened my flatmate freaked out because she thought i was an intruder. apparently in both cases in realising i was in the wrong room i was super apologetic before stumbling off to my own room. i have no recollection of either time 😬

You can rotate it which gives it a bit more room for the door to open a crack. So you can either slot it in snug or slot it the other way around and it haves a bit more of a gap when the door opens. Not much but enough to chat through the crack.
PS: I'm not living that one down, am I?
