I remember a few years ago I had to help my little brother with his assignment. It was about animals so he ending up choosing the Rhino. I did so much research on them, like the number of species and what not, and my heart would ache every time I would get to the section that regarded their population.

I've said it before, i'll say it again. Westen Governments should just go in there and take the lot. The Elephants, Rhinos, everything. And stick them in Australia or Nevada or something.

Beyond how problematic it would be to take these animals out of their natural habitats (not just culturally, but also given the history of animal captivity): the Tasmanian Tiger was hunted to extinction here in Australia. Many poachers have the capability to travel internationally; resellers have the reach to provide incentives to turn locals into poachers pretty much everywhere too. Investment in more well-secured reserves is probably the best compromise.

I think you overestimate the barrier of obtaining weapons/joining a poacher ring. Of course with poverty comes also the lack of education. Education that could lead to people wanting to preserve these animals.
