Western Digital Apparently Confirmed The First Official SSD Compatible with PS5

What's the point of adding a led on the ssd that you can't see if you installed it?? :messenger_unamused:
You can in most PC gamer cases.
The Led is a very common feature asked by them.

Hopefully the PS5 will help their prices come down. More customers, more demand, more competition, competitive prices.

The SSD expansion for the Xbox Series X is a proprietary solution, so MS can make money from every sale. It will always be more expensive than a regular PCI-E 3.0 M.2 SSD card on the market.

Yeah that is what I meant by saying custom - it's proprietary so will always likely be the costlier option unless Microsoft decides to reduce the price.

Seems like way more hassle than the xbox option. Load ur games on, take to ur friends pop it in and play. Other manufactures to come down the line. Elgant, simple, intuitive.
Ps5 approach, "please snap off the plastic, get a screwdriver, once in it aint going nowhere. Download the games at ur friends if u want to play".
Hahahaha no

The Xbox's memory card solution is well thought out and simple, which is awesome! But why the fuck are people acting like installing a m2 is the hardest thing ever?? If my 7 year old god son can manage upgrading a ps4 hdd, I'm sure other people will manage a task that's simpler.

I scanned through entire article didn't see any mention of Sony confirming anything. This thread was made on a lie.

I agree, why would WD put PS5 on its marketing material without Sony's approval? Hopefully we get some clarification soon.

It is quite easy. But SSDs are still much to small. A quick swappable solution is better for the moment. But still much to expensive. Prices must fall under 100€ to be a real alternative.

It 8s a shame that SSDs not really get cheaper since 1tb costs around 100€ but only faster instead.
There are so man HDDs still waiting for replacement but big SSDs are way to expensive even when nand chips aren't that expensive. The controller is.

Somehow I wish Sony would have designed a dual m. 2 slot solution to get the high performance with 2 much cheaper SSDs in a kind of raid mode. Than at least the price and size wouldn't be such a big problem.
But maybe demand for fast SSDs increases so manufacturers can drop prices through even more mass production.

I can agree with that. People will pay a premium for convenience, which is why I think Microsoft's solution is dope and super easy to market! But as you said, still too expensive at the moment.

Curious to see how the PS5 market goes though. If I was a SSD manufacturer, I would be marketing myself as the goto PS5 SSD and hopefully secure tens of millions of sales. I would also assume others would be doing the same, leading to competitive prices relatively quickly, but I think we'll have to wait and see.

Why do you guys NEED an SSD right away? Are you really gonna install 700GB of games on day one? In year one, even?

In 2 years there will be a lot more options, and they'll be cheaper.

You think you're going be able to just pop your SSD into a different Xbox and the games will simply run? I doubt it will work like that.

I have a family. My sons and wife don't play the same games than me. So at least for BC games I need a big drive.
700gb is really full quit fast. I generally don't play just one game, instead I normally play this today, tomorrow another and at another time the first game.
And if I want to play a whole other game, I don't want to re-download it.
My current xb1x has a 8 tb drive with 6tb of games on the external and internal drive.

Works today, why shouldn't it work than? Games are just bound to a license. You can have it in your account or via disc. No need to re-download it.

Still seems like a lot of space to fill up that quickly, but alright. Well, you can plug in a huge external drive if you want to be able to move stuff back and forth without redownloading. PS5 has USB ports that do 10 Gbps, so should be pretty quick.

What works today? You can bring your Xbox One HDD to a friend's house and just pop it in?

Ugh still not enough and wayyyyyyyy too high a price
They will come down, the consoles are not even released yet, within 6 months they won't be these prices. They still won't be cheap but they won't be these ridiculous prices.

I'm guessing about $150 for 1TB

Exactly, but no one around here will admit it.

Im really curious but how many people play more than 5 or 6 games simultaneous?

it's definitely a pain to uninstall and re-install games but to me even 825gb is enough I haven't used 50% of my PS4 pro's 1tb

Yes. The games will work as long as there is a valid license (account that owns the game or disc)
The only thing that made problems in the past are DLCs. Really I don't know why but I had to redownload those on the other console. But that might be solved, was a few years ago.

BTW, I really don't want to use an HDD for BC games. A slow but big SSD would be awesome for this, but there is non for a good price.

Just looked it up. Cheapest 8tb SSD (Sata or USB) arround 750€. 4tb for around 450€. And that is the slow qlc memory. Those prices must drop.

How about 2tb? My 2tb on pro are full ;(

(Just noticed that there is a 2 tbsp option. Nice. I hope it will be available, unlike most of the new stuff in 2020 )

You guys can't have it both ways, say the Xbox one super expensive and useless at $229 with the same basic functionality is now "great at $229" because it's faster (in a way that likely won't substantially affect overall performance) and not proprietary. To say nothing of compatibility issues that may arise.
MS has indicated they will allow other options in their form factor, and since the ssd is "slower", for all we know they may be cheaper in the long run.

To be fair, it's really a wash, on the one hand you have an easy to grab form factor that will actually be available and approved at launch, vs something that is the same price that may or may not be approved a launch.
And a future for both that could go either way, either one could end up cheaper.

Don't know why people were so concerned about this. Cerny said months ago, that PS5 will have lots of drives available. Sony only has to ensure that the drive has some headroom over 5.5gb/s so that it doesn't slow down the performance of the 12 gated onboard I/O....

The price tho... Looks like all the 7Gb's drives that meet the PS5 requirements are 200-230$, but who knows, maybe cheaper, 6-6.5Gb/s drives will be able to pass Sony's certification as well, would be cool if Sony provided a list f compatible drives at worst on the launch day.

The only gap I see is being able to take your SSD to a buddies house to play games on it and the trade off is 2X the speed on the SSD (and likely in the future the XBOX proprietary storage will cost more per GB). Btw, it isn't very hard to do that on the PS5 as well with High Speed USB and an External HD. Yeah, you have to transfer but transfer time is twice as fast than the 5GBS USB ports on XSX

It will still be cheaper than much slower proprietary drives......That's a win because you will not only get a faster product for cheaper or the same price, but you will be able to choose from the majority of SSD brand manufacturers.....What has happened is that Sony has given the manufacturer's the spec for which they need to be compatible with PS5...It will be foolish of them to ignore that spec and not make their products viable for 100-200 million people.......On virtue of so many companies competing for your SSD dollar instead of 1....prices on compatible PS5 SSD's will be very competitive and affordable....PS5 is probably what is going to drive the prices of SSD's down even further, and of course adoption, just as PS2 did for DVD, and PS3 for bluray etc....

SSD get really hot, and maybe its not a good idea to remove when it could be mid reading or writing.

I think easy access is nice but people are going to be using them like USB sticks, and they are not, little kids fingers do play.

I am more comfortable with SSD behind a screw cover.

Can these be used as external? And how?

Yes you can. But do your due diligence before you buy both the enclosure and the M.2 Gen 4 SSD, because some enclosure will force the one from Sabrent to run at Gen 3 compatibility mode if you're using a Thunderbolt 3 external enclosure.

Thanks
What enclosure would you recommend?

Is it for sure these can be used for PS5/Next gen games, or there not sure yet and only recommended for PS4 games etc?
