What are some "EASY and REALISTIC" wins that gaming companies could do...but havent.

JohnnyFootball

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
There are so many easy wins for companies, but for some reason they wont do them. What are some examples? Please make them somewhat realistic

Microsoft
  1. Make a version of Windows that is 100% gaming focused, no bloat, make it so that it can be controlled with a controller. Allow access to a desktop mode. Easy access to all stores and launchers. MS is supposedly trying this, but there is no way I trust them to not infest it with ads and AI bullshit. I would legit pay a yearly subscription for this kind of OS. We have something similar with Bazzite and may have this with SteamOS
  2. Put out remastered versions of Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I cannot get over how badly MS has wasted easy wins in purchasing Bethesda.

Valve
  1. Get SteamOS onto desktop with full support from nvidia and AMD. I have far greater optimism that this will happen, but I hope that this will push the HDMI Forum to allow on HDMI 2.1 on Linux for those who want to make a SteamOS living room PC where DP isn't available.
Sony
  1. Re-release classics like Killzone, Resistance, Ratchet, Daxter, God of War in an updated package at a $50 or less price
  2. Saying things like stop focusing on GAAS is quite obvious.
nvidia
  1. Holy fuck, where do we start? I'd start with increasing the availability of their GPUs. Duh
  2. Work with Valve to make an nvidia version of SteamOS that has all the performance advantages of windows. Yes, nvidia has drivers on Linux, but they perform a full tier worse (4070 Ti Super gets 4070 Super performance) for gaming that what they do for Windows. They could easily do this, by hiring a small team of Linux users.
  3. Come back with the 6000 series and be Paschal 2.0. I have little faith that this will happen, but AI will have some sort of crash and nvidia will have a whole lot of nice making to gamers who built their company.
AMD
  1. Get FSR4 into more games. MANY more. Pay whatever it takes to get FSR123 upgraded. it really is amazing when it works.
  2. Figure out the bullshit the HDMI Forum to get HDMI 2.1 support into Linux so gamers can have the true console experience on a home theater PC. Before you say "display port"...remember TVs dont have display port.
  3. All AMD really needs to do is NOT GET GREEDY. Make sure 9000 series stays in stock and always be prepared that nvidia's gamer side could wake up at any moment and destroy your value.
GENERAL GAME PUBLISHERS
  1. Cheaper/shorter less costly games. Easy.

Spot on. So many no brainers and they keep fumbling.

But nah, let's shove in more ads, subscriptions, and AI fluff no one asked for

Do you have suggestions?

Or are you implying that everything they are doing is perfect and should stay the course?

A lot of what these companies do is not perfect.

The decisions they make are usually based on some variant of data analytics, for better or worse.

Realistically, they would have a reason (data) why they would not take your post seriously.

Transparency.

Gamers reward it every time, but they're almost always too scared to do it.

This is a great answer, because it actually is relatively easy and realistic, unlike most of the items in the OP.

Like 90% of the heat Nintendo is taking right now could have been prevented by being direct and transparent instead of creating an information vacuum that's filling with rumors and misinformation. (People would still be pissed about $80 Mario Kart though.)

Sony has the easiest guaranteed hit of all time in a PC port of Bloodborne and does nothing while emulators service their would-be audience. Fucking fools.

Right? Because companies make 100% perfect decisions all the time.
Thats why the Wii U was a massive success.
That's why the Xbox is in shambles.

Please...bro.

Capcom.

Please, just remake Dino Crisis and port over Alien vs Predator to consoles and PC.

That's it.

You think multi-billion dollar corps make decisions off emotions/feelings?

😂😂😂

Data is everything.
I don't disagree, but data analysis is far from a perfect science. And I have personally seen many of them make BAD decisions due to OVER-RELIANCE on data.

Nintendo probably had DATA that said calling the Wii U was a good move.

None of these are easy, realistic, or necessarily wins.

Microsoft isn't going to just strip out AI when they are investing tens of billions of dollars into it. It's a core focus of the company. Nvidia can't "just" increase supply of their GPUs. Nobody cares that much about Killzone and Resistance and why Sony focused on GAAS so much has been discussed endlessly on this forum. I am sure AMD would like FSR4 to be in every game but it is not - here is that word - EASY - to get everyone on board immediately. It took years before DLSS gained momentum.

That's not to say these companies are perfect, but like anything else, it is helpful to discuss the WHY about a situation as opposed to just claiming that they are idiots for doing it this way and you know the right way and they need to listen to you.

Welcome to life. Nothing is guaranteed.

It is an opinion thread. Add yours.
I gave an opinion on yours. But here's an avenue that should be explored more, I think: Invest more on games focused primarily on children. It's not easy by any means, but it also shouldn't break the bank either so go at it and keep trying, try to create new trends that kids would embrace, create new genres and even new hardware that tries to redefine gaming for the new generation (this one is hard and risky).

Data analytics is not a fool proof concept, it however is what companies use to forecast financial loss or success.

It can be wrong, most definitely.

TIL Linux has issues with HDMI. First I'm learning about this.
LInux specifically has HDMI issues with AMD GPUs. AMD GPUs are desired on Linux systems due to their open source nature. The HDMI Forum has issues with this and continues to reject AMDs ability to allow HDMI 2.1 support in Linux due to their proprietory nature. Rumor has it that these instructions have already leaked. nvidia doesn't have open source drivers so its not an issue with Linux, but nvidias linux performance is pretty bad compared to windows (I think 30% loss)

If your using a desktop PC with DP, it's a non-issue, but those of us (yes, dozens of us) who made a dedicated gaming PC on a living room PC, you are limited to 4K/120 8-bit 420 (which doesnt look as bad as you think) instead of 4K/120 444 10-bit HDR. I went back to Windows 11 LTSC because of this. FSR4 isn't yet implemented into Linux yet and won't be until the SDK is released.

Make games for their actual audience instead of the audience they wish they had.

Nintendo choosing not to make Palworld (but Pokemon) until someone else ate their lunch has to be one of the easiest wins a company passed up.

I get why this bothers you, but surely you can see why it is not a priority for these companies to fix such an edge case.

Every company has limited resources and prioritizes issues in part based on how many people they affect.

I know and thats why I got rid of Linux. I want to take full advantage of my 9070XT and Windows at the moment is the only way to do it.

I hate it, but it is what it is.

The companies that thrive are those that get ahead.

AMD has a massive opportunity to work with Valve/Steam/Linux to really promote a customizeable console like gaming PC without the crap of windows and lask of HDMI 2.1 could be a deal breaker.

Of course, maybe at some point TV makers will add a DisplayPort, since realistically speaking we are at a max as far as features for these TVs and realisticaly gaming ports are one way to increase value.

Will it happen? I'll believe it when i see it, but once TVs panels reach 240 Hz (LGs G4 is already at 165Hz), I think it could happen. let's be real HDMI 2.1 offers no benefit to movies or content consumers so gamers would benenfit the most.

Yeah, sometimes. Though many are, not all decisions are made based on data analytics. A lot of times companies make decisions based on their culture and practices that are ingrained into their DNA. Sometimes decisions are made based on hubris and a feeling that the data is wrong. At the end of the day companies are run by humans. If all decisions were based on correct analysis of factual data with no feeling involved we probably wouldn't be having discussions about what they are screwing up. Yet here we are.

The data can be wrong.

I'm now on tech forums reading about the open source issue.
If Steam OS is to have any chance on HDMI who would have to pay? Valve or AMD? BOTH? If this isn't solved then Windows will be the only good way to game.

One thing I always thought about is that console makers should have one standard game engine built for their console.

For example, Sony and all their Studios should be working on one standard game engine, were it's tweaked and updated to perfection.

This engine would be available for 1st and 2nd party studios, as well as exclusive 3rd party games.

Key Features and Functions that would be standard:
  • Asset Management: Tools for importing and managing game assets like models, textures, sounds, and animations.

  • Level/Scene Editors: Visual tools for creating and editing the game's environments and layouts.

  • Scripting and Logic: A programming language or API for implementing game logic and behavior.

  • Rendering and Graphics: Handles the process of drawing the game world on the screen, including 2D and 3D rendering.

  • Physics and Simulation: Provides tools for simulating physics, such as collisions, movement, and interactions.

  • Generative AI: Allows for real-time adaptation of gameplay based on player behavior, dynamic NPC interactions, and the generation of new content like quests, environments, and soundscapes.

Should have made a Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 already and never wasted time on Starfield

Blizzard making a Starcraft 3 and Starcraft Ghost trilogy already

More AAA Zelda back to the amazing art style of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask cause always wanted to see the art from their art books coming alive but the game engine at the time was limited at the time.

Odsidian would have made another big Fallout game using Fallout 4's engine just like what they did with NV using FO3's engine. And never wasted time on Avowed and Outer worlds.

More Resident Evil games, a Resident Evil Outbreak using the current RE Engine cause Outbreak was way ahead of it's time and would be amazing nowadays with the new gameplay and online.

Half Life 3 would have been released

Timesplitters 4 cause part 3 was massively underrated.

Would have been new Infamous and Prototype games.

Dawn of War 4, Tiberium Wars 5.

Final Fantasy Remakes of FFIV, FFV, FFVI at least.

Quake 5 cause Quake 4 was amazing

Deep Fear and Carrier getting a bunch of sequels as a rival horror series to Resident Evil and Silent Hill

More Ratchet and Clank games

etc etc etc....

AMD already pays licensing fees to the HDMI Forum. Everyone blames the issue on the HDMI Forum, but I don't completely let AMD off the hook.

Linus actually gives a fair assessment of it.

NINTENDO

1: Make Welcome Tour a free pack-in for all Switch 2 SKUs
2: State that only games coming on 64 GB Switch 2 carts may end up costing upwards $90 physical
3: Recommend kids using the new JoyCons as mice use mouse trackpads with them

SONY
1: Never announce another PC port of non-GAAS game at a SOP or Showcase ever again; PC players have to show they meaningfully contribute to PS (engagement & sales/revenue) before getting that privilege
2: Provide more straightforward way for people to back up save data to external storage (less jumping through hoops)
3: Provide easier means of using the web browser like a real browser

MICROSOFT

1: Make better commercials (stop leaning into memes, very "How do you do fellow kids?" energy)
2: Don't market the next Xbox devices running off Teraflops or being cheeky about PlayStation specs (Series S CPU faster than PS5 type BS). It will backfire immediately
3: Classify next Xbox as a computer so it can escape Trump tariffs

VALVE

1: Just keep staying several steps ahead of Microsoft on the whole "Consolefying PC gaming" strategy

SQUARE-ENIX

1: Do more games like DQ1-3 HD Remake and Romancing SaGa 2 Remake
2: Ensure Switch 2 is a Day 1 for FF IX Remake and next mainline FF game
3: Stop setting stupidly unrealistic sales expectations for games. Six million sales shouldn't be considered a failure.

SEGA-ATLUS

1: Make an OutRun 3
2: Stop prioritizing Xbox for Western games marketing; it's just screwing your games over in getting peak attention (also affects sales)
3: Make a Shining Force III Scenarios 1-3 Remake within the next 10 years

BANDAI-NAMCO

1: Get the rights from SIE to publish a Parappa & UmJammer collection (Parappa 1, Parappa 2, UmJammer w/ uncensored songs, Parappa anime episodes as bonus) for PS4/PS5, Switch 2 & Steam
2: Make an actual DBZ JRPG sometime in the next decade

I thought you couldn't back up PS5 games to an external device period except to the cloud. End of Story? Is this not the case?
