What are your expectations for Horizon Zero Dawn?

the sequel to this will be amazing when they expanded melee combat options and add flying mount/aerial combat, and even more machine variety in general.

I'm content with what I see so far, my only concern is just enemy variety and while we've seen quite a bit, I hope there's much much more machine we haven't seen yet. we know there are 26 machine total, I just hope that doesn't count variation of the same type.
26 is alot. Especially how detailed those machines are.

Man don't do this to yourself.

Seems like a really solid game but the stock open world shenanigans are really bumming me out. Please don't be like Infamous or Assassins Creed or Far Cry in your open world structure.

Just wait and see then.

It would be pretty difficult for her to visually age as she has if she were an android.

Probably a Meta of 85-87
I HOPE the story is good or at least entertaining, but I could see it being a weak spot. I can also see people saying it gets a bit repetitive after a good chunk of hours.

I love these types of open-world games where there is a bunch of checkbox stuff to do (Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Batman, Etc..) so I'm pumped for it.

Do you trust reviews?

I can't remember the last time I've read a review. I take a look at preview footage or other media available and decide if I'd be interested in the game, but as far as trusting folks who get flown to events and to then write about the game....nah

Why is expanded melee needed? You're mainly fighting giant metal machines. What new combat strategies would more melee attacks actually open up?

Also 26 distinct enemies types is quite a lot for a game. Glancing online, Geometry Wars has 9 types, Destiny has around 25 (according to this), Mass Effect 3 had around 33

I think someone made a count in other horizon thread and we already see around 15 of them. if the 26 number include variation, than we might have seen most of the machines. which I hope not, but for now, that's my worst scenario for the game.

While I'm expecting it to be the typical open-world format, I'm hoping the story will be good/great enough to set it apart from the typical open-world game narrative.

As someone who hasn't played a Ubisoft game and is currently playing Witcher 3 can someone explain the difference that makes W3 GOTY but far cry average?

I dont trust GG, but am hoping to be proved wrong

Dont forget the hype for this is led by articles that showed writers from New Vegas and Witcher were on board, so people expect something like those games

I doubt it
Seems like variations would be defined by a machine's individual components, rather than having individual bestiary slots for variations

it's a western action rpg

it's going to be generic but it will look fantastic ... that's all that matters to some.

Expect lots of forced walk and chats and easy little boss fights full of cool camera cuts at the explosions.
useless skills and fetch missions
"Practical" and boring armor/outfits for those cool blog/article mentions

Brain dead combat

Aloy looks decent but Im guessing GG will be so afraid of how she is portrayed/received by the usual crowds that she will most likely end up in the bland bin of female protags like Reboot Lara, Evie Fry, and Faith from ME in terms of character dev.

Solid 83 on metacritic

Incredibly Naive
What about The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4, Ratchet, Yakuza 0, Nioh, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, Driveclub Post patch, MLB The Show, Gravity Rudy 2, Resogun, Infamous SS?

jeeez again read my responses. The original post implied that their exclusives this gen have been great so you can assume this one will be. I countered with that's not necessarily true. in fact I think sonys weakpoint this gen has easily been their first party. They had an unreal 1st party lineup for ps3, and while it's still somewhat early, they were way ahead at this point last gen. i don't want to start this debate again in this thread. It always leads to the same damn responses. Yes dev times are longer, yes games are more expensive. That being said WWS isn't a sure thing IMO. I'm still excited for this regardless.

Fair point. Yea Warhawk,Motorstorm Pacific Rift,Ratchet A crak in Time,God of War3,Uncharted2,Folklore, inFAMOUS,Killzone2,Resistance3 were some of my favorites but The Last Guardian is the best game i have ever played so yea Sony has delivered so far this generation in my eyes.

I get you're mostly kidding, but the idea that one game makes them infallible is silly.

Zelda has towers too. UBI game!
As least the ones in Horizon are moving.

It could be argued that The Wind Waker was similar to modern ubisoft open worlds.

I don't really mind towers in any game that has them, though I think most games handle them poorly. The point of Towers in Zelda or Horizon isn't really climbing the tower, that's pretty much a formality, the challenge is getting to them.
For example Zelda puts a guardian next to the tower that most people are likely to go to first after the plateau

In Horizon I hope they do something neat with the idea as well, make going to the Tallnecks into a mini challenge where you have to get past a sick huge beast or something along those lines. A Climbing challenge with the weak mechanics in that regard doesn't seem right. I think it's also hurt a bit by the fact that getting off the Tower is canned animation though. Zelda probably has a better implementation due to the hanglider which flows more naturally I feel. Plus Aloy's apparently got a Grappling hook that the player never gets to use mechanically and that bothers me more than it should.

Only for the one with a lower Metacritic

Sadly. I think both games will be great, I think Zelda is arguably more interesting for someone of my tastes because I really appreciate well executed gameplay variety centered around flexible mechanics. But Horizon makes a strong case with its combat focus.

Open world RPG with non-shitty combat. I know its basic stuff but looking at other open world RPGs released in last 5 years, apparently good combat is too much to ask.

Does it have mulitplayer co-op? Its what made Dying Light SO much fun and after a while we pretty much lost interest after finishing the main campaign and maxing out our characters.

I'm expecting a high quality RPG that will become one of the premier IP for Sony over the years.

Nah.

In the dev stream, the Tallneck the devs went to was guarding by a pack of Watchers around its route. So others might have more challenging enemies around, like this

Going by that image we can add the Corrupter, Snapjaw, Glinthawk, Sawtooth, and the bird like one that looks like a Chocobo that is in one of the video previews. Still a bunch left to discover.

EDIT: Actually Sawtooth is already on that image

the actual giant machine is not that many really. anyway, we have lots of long range option from bow, bomb, trap, ropecaster. I think it'd be nice to have more close range options than just the spear combo.

didn't know Destiny only have 25 enemies. I think 26 different type of machine is enought if it didn't include variation like Fire Bellowback and Ice Bellowback.

Review thread is gonna be brutal for both games
By en large expectations are that Zelda will be a 90+ (probably 94+) masterpiece, while most give HZ a guess between low to mid 80s, as it is a new IP with a studio that has a great technical pedigree but not much in terms of adventure and nothing for rpgs.

So, in spite of the HZD hype, the pressure is very much on BOTW to deliver it seems to me.
I can't even imagine the GAF shake up if roles ended up reversed tbh (HZD in the 90s, and BOTW in the 80s).

If that happens I probably won't visit the site for a couple of days haha

It'd probably be a nightmare. Wondering what Zelda could have done to screw up that badly that even its bias couldn't compensate for it.

This is whats wrong with this website.

Calling a score in the 80s a "Screw up". People need their goddamn heads examined.

I'm confident it'll be a good game, but the far cry-esque aspects kind of deter me. Not to mention it releases within a week of Zelda and Nier. Ugh, this year is both the best thing ever and the worst.

Well, considering it'd be the first 3D Zelda to not get a 90+ metascore, I think that's actually a reasonable question to ask. Something clearly would have went wrong to deter people from just tossing 10s at it.

It's unlikely because it looks incredibly well made in pretty much every sense. But its a possibility.

This game will never be given a fair shake on here until the reviews come out. Which is crazy considering how well it was received for both E3 showings. One short clip of Aloy hacking a Tallneck like a tower and things have completely gone to shit. I expect a lot of "I wasn't really that interested in this, but now I'm pre-ordering" once the review embargo drops. 85 minimum is my prediction.

I'm expecting two things from it. First thing I'm expecting it to have is satisfying combat (and based off the impressions, that seems to be the case). The next thing I'm expecting (moreso hoping) is for it to be a visual showcase and become THE title folks use to show off HDR. We already know about the graphics/visuals, absolutely gorgeous, I just really really want to see how this game will look in HDR. That style/color palette and what not is a perfect fit for HDR to really shine through.
