What could Microsoft show at E3 to finally get you to buy an Xbox One?

They'd need to do three things:

1. Pay for every game that uses GFWL to get it patched out or commit to run the authentication servers for ten more years.
2. Introduce a Kinect and HDMI passtrough-less SKU that is smaller and cheaper and has a 1TB HDD.
3. (The most important) Games that cater to my tastes. The best would be a true AAA 3D platformer. Easier and cheaper would be to fund the next Zero Escape. Japanese support in general would help a lot for me. No shooters, no MP service games. I'm more than done with both of those game templates.

It's because indie games don't count. And PS4/PC games don't count, only X1/PC games are "exclusive". Also Knack is barely a game so that doesn't count. MLB is on PS3 so that doesn't count. Who even plays KZ so let's take that out. So yea, PS4 literally only has inFamous.

Anyways I agree with others, a good apology will go a long way. And none of that "consumers don't understand" BS

boo hoo cry more, why do you always bring this console war bullshit into threads it has nothing to do with ?

nice attempt at staying ontopic though

I see a lot of people in this thread still hold a grudge against Microsoft for DRM-gate, 'power of the cloud' bullshit, focus on non-gaming, and then maybe worst of all blaming customers for not getting it.

Which is good, because I still hold that grudge too. Xbox 360 was the first of the last gen consoles I bought but I won't be buying an Xbox One.

I can't imagine why anyone would need to have both an xbone and a ps4 so they've got no shot with me. Maybe at the end of the decade I'll pick one up to play the couple exclusives I missed. So I guess they'd have to show some time travel to get me on board.

At least he'd finally be in a Kart game like he was going to be!

No more complaining. :)

I already own an XBO so they already got me. But there are some things they definitely should do.

-lower the price to $400. I'm going to go against popular opinion and say they should absolutely keep Kinect included. It is the one thing that truly differentiates them from the competition. Remove that and all you have left is a less powerful PS4

-Remove the paywall. Stop making it a selling point for Live and make it one for your console instead. Maybe it diminishes the value of Live slightly, but it adds value to the console itself.

-Games. I really want to see more 1st party games. Money hatting is only ever a temporary solution. And time delayed content does nothing for me because all my third party games are purchased on my PS4. Put that money into your own studio's. Sony doesn't have huge blockbusters but they do have a lot of unique titles that sell well and appeal to a wide range of people.

-image. At E3, they need to get up on stage, humbled and admit they made mistakes much like I remember Tretton doing a few years ago after the PS3's disastrous start. And then start showing some goodwill towards their supporters. If Sony can comeback from where they were, I think MS can too.

I know I didn't add much new, but those are what I feel are the most important things they can do right now. Long term obviously there is more but that is a good start anyway.

That seems really odd to me. The company specialises in cloud processing, has less than ten employees, and of those ten employees that are on LinkedIn – none of them are designers/artists.

edit: OK, I'm now in full GAF detective mode. Just looked up some of their employees' twitter accounts. They're all following TONS of accounts held by Microsoft Studios and Epic Games employees – and pretty much nothing else. Are we looking at Crackdown 3 running in Unreal Engine 4 potentially?

edit 2: oh, and a bunch of their employees are from Realtime Worlds, original developers of Crackdown. This is very, very interesting...

Very interesting. Nice finds.

EDIT: I had my doubts about that being legit, but damn if you didn't just pretty much confirm that he was telling the truth.

Actually, I think you should start a thread on this. It is good stuff.

...Whoa.

I concur. Somebody make a thread.

This ... Minus currently owning an X1

Probably nothing since I'd much rather have better versions of the best 3rd party games then some overrated 1st party titles. Those best versions will almost always be found on PS4. I really don't care about Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, MediaMolecule, Sucker Punch, or Santa Monica. Give me The Witcher 3 in its best non-PC form.

I know right. Just look at all their games for the first 6 months, all Fable, Halo, Gears, and Forza.

You joke, but so far there's been a new Halo, Gears, and Fable announced, Forza launched with the console, and we're anticipating another Halo and Forza to be announced at E3.

It's really not difficult to see why MS has this reputation.

Absolutely nothing, MS burned it's bridges with me between last years TVTVTV anouncement, polices, kinect, weaker hardware at a higher price and lost me as a customer.

I went with Sony's PS4 this gen as in my opinion it is a proper games console first and has the best console versions of multiplatform games, Ps plus is miles ahead of Live and better value. I am planning on getting a Wii U this summer.

Honestly, MS needs to stop using damn middleware (particularly UE4) in the first party development. It comes across as lazy and of their having low standards for their first party content. I get that middleware is awesome for third party developers but I kind of feel that first parties should be building their own platform-tailored engines.

Your opinion, but 399 without kinect is still a weaker console for the same price of the ps4. Imo it should be 349 or 299 without kinect. That would be fair.

It should be $400 WITH Kinect if you ask me. Suck it up and take the loss on each console. If they remove the Kinect, meaning that when Universal Apps become a thing on the console, we lose a load because they can't translate well from touchscreen/gyro to joypad, then MS has fucked up imho.

Simple:
-Kinectless version at about 300 euros, plus
-Exclusive Virtua Fighter 6 or Dead or Alive 6

That would make me 'jump in'. Won't happen, though.

Nothing!
After what they have tried with the XBone.... they're dead to me.
It's PlayStation/Nintendo for me all the way. Don't need more.

* Don't talk about TV or other types of entertainment on a game convention. Keep it strictly games.
* Introduce a kincetless SKU, and drop the price down for it to $349
* When signing up for Gold, let the first month be free of charge.
* Introduce a spectacular lineup of games. This need to be killer.
* Don't let Yusuf Mehdi up on stage. No mentions of the word TV.

This will improve Xbone's chances immensely.

As a recent/current owner of the system, this is in line with my stance on the system.

Bully 2, Red Dead 3 exclusivity
Virtua Fighter 6

Would basically have to force my hand but Halo will always be a system seller for me.

Nothing as I'm sticking with one platform as I don't game enough to justify more than that these days.

I'm gonna go with this.

They might get my interest if they buy exclusivity out of a shit ton of good third parties and big franchises, but if they do that, they'll just cement in my mind that they're an unimpressive company wanting to hoarde all the third parties onto their inferior console. Which will just make me less interested in buying the system in the end.

Nothing. Most games on the xbone are available on PC. Furthermore, I already have enough games to play on my Playstation and PC.

It wouldn't be worth investing in an xbone.

Nothing. But it's not their fault.

As I get older, I have more responsabilities and less time to game.
Because of that, I decided to go 1 console only and already made the choice and bought a PS4 (no regrets, btw).

So neither Xbox nor Ninty will se my money anytime soon.

That said, near the end of the gen, if the WiiU or Xbone price hit PS3/360 levels, I would bite just to play the best game available for each plataform.

Ditch Kinect, drop the price to 349 and I'm in to play some Halo 2 anniversary because atm my console MP life barely exists. (I have PS4, paitently waiting and enjoying Infamous though)

The drop won't happen. Which is sad. H2 had the best mp in the series.

People saying "Nothing" are either weird ideologues or are not being honest.

In this thread you can make up your own hypothetical scenario where Microsoft funds exclusive sequels to your 3 favorite third-party games of all time. Or makes the dream game that you have always wanted, but never seemed commercially feasible. Or creates a cross-buy program with the PC. Or purchases your favorite developer. Or announces a full-body VR suit. None of those things would be enough to buy an XB1? Nothing would be enough?

Look, I understand the indignation over restricted used game sales and requiring internet connections for single player. I'm glad the community pushed back. But ultimately there comes a point where content trumps politics for me. The content is why I am in this hobby to begin with. If Microsoft shows off this generation's equivalent of Mario 64, they could put ten Kinects in the box, change all the system icons to NFL team logos, and replace the boot up screen with a personal insult directed at my mother, and I would still be lining up for it.

I'm gonna call bullshit on people saying absolutely nothing will get them to buy an Xbone. My post was obviously unrealistic, but tell me any of you honestly wouldn't bite if my entire list came true. I mean, come on! $99 to see Mehdi and Penello apologizing to the world and GAF on stage, in their underwear! Oh, and you'd get all the other stuff I listed, too.

Seriously, though, the question is, "What could MS show at E3 to get you to buy an Xbone?" It's not, "What could MS realistically show at E3 to get you to buy an Xbone?" Use your imaginations.

Okay, I'll start you off with a single sure-fire winner instead of a long list.

  • Every Xbone sold between E3 until the end of the year comes with a $1000 Amazon gift card.

edit: *Bro fist* Tokkun

It may remain a tough sell for me for a while, as is PS4 to a lesser extent. Ditch Kinect, lower the price (for current config and additionally so for a Kinect-less model), get some exclusives that really grab my attention like a Lost Odyssey 2 to go along with Halo.

I tend to be into handhelds nowadays, even for extended play sessions (leaving the TVs free for other things). And regardless, 360/etc haven't suddenly stopped being excellent systems.

  • $99
  • New Mother game by Itoi
  • Mehdi and Penello doing the bow of apology on stage in their underwear, with Penello specifically addressing GAF. Some points they'd apologize for are insisting the DRM backlash was due to poor messaging and not because it fucking sucked, attempts to confuse/fool customers into thinking Xbone is on par performance-wise with PS4, generally using FUD to deceive customers, Power of the Cloud, etc..
  • Fortaleza Glasses are real and actually work as well as their fake demos would have you believe. They're also bundled with Xbone at the $99 price above.
  • New slim model with built-in power supply, full BC with 360 games, user-replaceable 1TB SSD, and full compatibility with previous gen peripherals including Logitech G27 and arcade sticks. And all for $99 of course.
  • Drop paywall for everything except Xbox TV programming, since I don't give a shit about that.
  • Various other things I'm certainly forgetting
Of course, I could probably be swayed by much less than my unrealistic list. But if MS actually did all of the above at E3, then they would definitely get a sale from me! I definitely wouldn't be like some other people who would inevitably move goal posts and say, "Not gonna buy one until it's $49!" Nope. I'd definitely stick to my word if they met all the points in my list. Honestly. I'm not Penelloing you.

This. Exactly

There's nothing wrong with using middleware. AAA game development is costly enough as it is.
Why add on significant money and time cost when using existing software would work just fine?

Of course some franchises/studios are big enough to warrant a custom engine, but it's not always necessary.
Calling it 'lazy' or saying it sets 'low standards' is kinda ridiculous...

People saying "Nothing" are either weird ideologues or are not being honest.
Some people are fine with access to a couple exclusives and the multiplatform games
Some people are just fanboys

Doesn't really matter either way, I just tend to read the more thoughtful posts

A "Tales of" game as good as Tales of Vesperia as an exclusive. I don't think Microsoft is money-hatting Japanese developers this time around though. They've probably given up on winning over Japan to their consoles that way.

Putting aside discussions about whether the OP intended for the wishlists to be realistic, quasi-realistic, or completely in the realms of fantasy, I don't think it's inconceivable that some people were so badly put off the Xbox brand by all the crap that they tried to pull last year that they will not buy an Xbox on principle regardless of what they do.

I personally agree that content trumps politics eventually, but for me that's not something that they can fix with a single decent E3 showing. I want to be convinced that MS are good for gaming before I fork over cash, and at the moment with both the way they treated the 360 post-2009 and the launch of the Xbone I'm not convinced.

So, no, there really is nothing that MS could do at this E3, as far as I'm concerned, that could get me to buy an Xbone that is within the realms of plausibility, even within the realms of extreme plausibility. At least, nothing that would have that effect immediately; a clear change of direction from MS would be a good start but I still wouldn't buy one for another 4-5 years even if they hammered that consistently.
