I build a very similar system for only $1100 including tax... you might want to build your own by shopping at ncix.com or directcanada.com

Can you give me recommendations then on the parts you bought? This is the first machine I've ever built and would honestly just want a list of parts that I know will work together. If you have a similar one for $1100 bucks, and could list links to parts that would be a major help.

If I know everything I'm ordering is designed to work together, I doubt I'll have too many problems putting it together.

just for fun i built a similar computer using parts from my favourite local store, came out to 1150.

Did you look at the machine I just posted from Newegg? I seems like a helluva good deal for $1000.

Spending 1000$ on a desktop and getting an 8600 is not a helluva good deal. Helluva grifting maybe.

8600?

images_do_not_want-741689.jpg

So can you guys then link me to the parts on newegg that I should buy? It seems I can build a helluva good machine for a grand. I just need some finger pointing to the parts.

Here's the system I just put together for $700 CDN:

Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 @ 2.4GHz
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 RAM
ASUS PK5 P35 SATA2 PCI-e x16 mobo
EVGA GeForce 8800GT @ 512MB
Western Digital Caviar SATA2 250GB hard drive
Thermalright Ultima-90 heatsink
Panaflo 92mm fan (for heatsink)
Windows XP Home OEM

Granted, I already have my case and disc drive, but those shouldn't be more than another $100 or so. Custom build is what I'd suggest. You get to put in exactly what you want, and oftentimes it's cheaper.

I just built a similar system for a bit over $1k at mwave. The major difference would be i went with a 2600XT instead of the 8800GTS and Windows Vista instead of XP.

They have a service where for $80 they will do assembly and test and blah blah, for those of us that are too lazy to do it on our own.

that's the part that nubs always fail to realize. you don't even have the to build the thing yourself. just buy the parts and take it to your local home computer store.

i know a place that assembles computers for 40 bucks. that's a time saved.

you may want to wait a couple of weeks until the new GTS is out.
Yes, the 8800GT can run crysis, but it is on the edge.
The new GTS is suposed to be faster than the GTX and will be a better card.
The new GTS might be called 8900.

What am I missing here? Don't I need a power supply and maybe a heatsink for the cpu? I have the 8600GT just as a placeholder until the 8800GT is back in stock at Newegg. Any other ideas or recommedations ??

The Sonata III comes with a 500W PS. Remember to add the cost of XP Pro/Home or Vista. Also, if you don't plan on OC too much, the standard heat sink that comes with the proc will do.

So if I add Vista OEM there is absolutely nothing else I would need? Oh crap...Vista Home OEM is $329??? Maybe I should just find my old XP disc.

Edit: My mistake. I was looking at a three pack.

I've added:

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM

Not that I can think of, well nothing that you would need to put inside the case at least. You might want to buy a keyboard + mouse + monitor if you don't have those 3 items. Also you might want MS Office Standard, but you can always get OpenOffice instead which is free.

Should I add another 2gig of ram and push it 4gig?

I just realized that is only 1 gig in my order list.

What do you think about this ram?

OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail $119.99

I need some ram recommedations for my system described in the OP!!!

I plan to start out with this, then upgrade:

Mach Speed P4MST-890 Motherboard - Qty: 1 $59.99
Crucial 1024MB DDR2 - Qty: 2 $49.98
Intel PD 925 3.0GHz OEM - Qty: 1 $79.99
Maxtor DiamondMax 21 200GB Hard Drive - Qty: 1 $59.99
Power Up Mid-T w/450-Watt PSU - Qty: 1 $39.99

- $50 Instant Savings + $40 MIR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

= $199.99 w/ rebates or $239.99 w/o rebates.

Add a video card, cooling fan, DVD drive, and *in the money*.

I totally missed the HDD part, but yes get a HDD. You should get a 2gig kit (1gig x 2), so you can upgrade in the future, or just get 2 x 2gig kit (for 4 gigs now) if you have the spare change.

It's a good system, I have a very similar setup and it's running really well, albeit the video card isn't a 8800GT it runs a lot of the newer games without much problem.

I actually bought a sonata III last week, it looks ok, but the build quality is really shoddy. The rubber foots are glued, and they are using some really crappy glue, so everytime I drag my case around (lets say I want to switch to my headphones or want to plug in some usb thing), the foots comes off. I'm going to have to buy myself some decent glue.

The hd racks inside are fine, but eh, it's a really C grade case. Had I known about this beforehand, I wouldnt had bought it.

Wow, that's a pretty damning account of it. Do you have one you'd rather buy now or a different recommedation?

Aw screw it. If I'm going to do the 64 bit OS, I might as well just go with the 4gigs of ram. :D

Now the only problem with my current list of parts is that I can't get the new 8800GT yet. Newegg appears to be outta stock.

If you're going with a 8800 series card, I'd get a better psu than 500w... What's the rail voltage on that psu?

Just get the 8800GT 512mb Super Clocked from eVGA as well when in stock again... eVGA's warranty/replacement/upgrade program is basically the best in the business I think...

I'm kicking the tires on a few computer setups right now, and the big question I have is about RAM. What should I be looking at...

4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 4DIMMs
or
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs

This is an example, but quite often it's usually about the same price and I'm not sure which I should be looking at. Is the faster speed of the 800mhz ram enough of an advantage that it's preferable to double the amount of 667mhz ram? I'm looking at getting a fairly good Core 2 Duo over a slower Quad Core which is also usually the same price if that impacts anything.

I just put it on my wish list and for me to be notified. You really don't think 500w is enough power for everything? I don't want to have to start from the ground up with a new case and bigger power supply.

Also, anyone have feelings on whether I really should bother with the 4gig of ram for now? Or, is it a total waste?

I would imagine you're better off with the slower 4GB than the faster 2GB. However, why not just get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145034

It's 2GB @ 800MHz and you can just buy two of em. That's what I'm thinking of doing.

If you doubt 4gb just grab 2gb now and then 2gb later. 2gb should be fine for now unless you feel like running a bunch of stuff in the background while you are gaming. PC parts get cheaper so I would just leave room for expansion.

Can you be more specific? I dont even know what youre talking about

He's talking about your motherboard... I never tried the brand you're looking into, ASUS is well known, but their boards are sometimes more costly than equal boards from a different company... I actually use a MSI in my machine, works and runs beautifully...

500w can be a little limiting based on what you want to run... I'd suggest something a bit higher... Do it right the first time so you don't have to worry about this part again I think... Look into the OCZ power supplies, and try to score something in a 600-700w range just to be safe...

Also, I noticed you want to run Vista... More than 2Gb is needed if you're going to do any sort of gaming, media, or graphical work on it... Vista really hammers your mem resources... I'd go with 4Gb... And never go with 512 sticks if you decide to go with 2gb because when you upgrade down the road, you can easily have space to keep in the 2 1gb sticks and add in 2 more 1gb sticks, as opposed to shuffling through slots with the 512 sticks...
