What do you think is the most important PlayStation game of the past 30 years?

Metal Gear Solid
Silent Hill
Gran Turismo
Final Fantasy 7
Resident Evil
Tekken
Ridge Racer

Boring answer but these are the titles that left a long lasting impression of what a PlayStation is.

Nothing can defeat ff7. The move from pixel to 3d, fmv scenes, upgraded midi soundtrack from square was revolutionary.

A very vague question, with very vague criteria, to put it bluntly. Plus the 30-year mark, during this time there were several generations of consoles and different games were released on them, in each generation there were games that had a huge impact on the industry as a whole.

To me it's something from the older gens, because later budgets and therefore marketing budgets exploded so it's hard to tell if the game was important or just the markting campaign.

I would say there is no single game, but the Gran Turismo/GTA/Meal Gear franchises on PS1/PS2 were super important for PlayStation.

Personal opionion:
Shadow of the Colossus. The game was ahead of it's time and had a special atmosphere with a mix of despair/hope/passion/oppressive feeling

Some good mentions here but I'm surprised I don't see Resident Evil up there with a lot of these lists. It spearheaded an entire genre that remains popular today.
Back in the day Resident Evil was the game everyone, even casual gamers played. It was especially popular with my girlfriends in the 90s.

I would also pick uncharted 2 with msg 4 close second. I don't think u guys remember how ps3 was failing before these two games were released. they both saved a sinking ship and pioneered the ps monopoly that we have today.

Obviously not, Hulst is very wrong. The answer is obvious.

The best IP is Gravity rush, a very beautiful game with beautiful messages, and the protagonist who is a beautiful and kind girl.

It's a beauty of IP.

As well as several games from Japan Studio.

It is the game that literally marked and left its mark on my life.

It might just have to be FF7 for me, but a lot of games that were only possible on PS1 due to being on disc should be credited. I can also see arguments to be made for MGS1 and GT too.

I do believe the most important game belongs to one of these PS1 titles as it laid the foundation for the brand, but the impact of GTA3 on the PS2 elevated the brand to new heights.

With the potential to course correct the whole division, and hopefully kick out that Hermen moron.
He already mentioned they are continuing their GAAS push. It’s nothing personal, if he doesn’t he will get replaced by someone who does.
Regarding the game - FFVII.

Probably Shadow of the Colossus, RE1 or FF VII. But I'll take any heavy hitter from their first two eras, the only time when it made sense owning a Playstation console.

Ding ding ding.

Hermen’s answer makes no sense. PlayStation cemented its success with its first two consoles, and nothing - nothing - comes close to the earthquake that was GTA3. Final Fantasy came and went in a blaze of glory. Metal Gear Solid is confined to remakes. Gran Turismo is far from the most successful games of today. GTA, though? GTA V is the best-selling video game of all time not called Minecraft, lightyears ahead of number 3 on the list. And GTA6 is the most awaited game right now, bar none. Uncharted 2 came so late to the party, giving it any merit in expanding the brand’s success is beyond laughable.

I’ll say this to the end of my days. MGS2 proved to the industry that the audience would sit through literal hours of non-playable content interspersed with playable sections, if said content was cool enough. And GTA3 spearheaded the open-world sandbox genre that is still the most requested single-player genre in the industry at the moment. Combine the two, and you get today’s AAA gaming. Nothing influenced gamers’ tastes like that PS2-first duo, and nothing contributed more to PS steamrolling the competition. The only difference between the two is that GTA still makes bank today.

why are you laughing?
What is more well known, important PS ip?
Tlou is one of very few brands known outside of playstation. My wife watched the show and she loves it.

I am not saying it's my fav or better than metal gear or ff7. But it's clearly most well knows playstation IP.
Would be spider-man but that kinda doesn't count.

My friend, you care too much about other people’s reactions.

Anyway, TLOU is a very late PS3 game. And if we’re talking games that expanded PlayStation’s audience in the last 30 years, anything later than mid-gen PS2 is automatically the wrong answer. Conflating the success of a collateral project, like a TV show, with the expansion of the PlayStation gaming audience is a fallacy. Most people who discovered TLOU via the show won’t go out and buy a video game console to play the games.

but I don't see tv shows and zeitgeist around crash bandicoot or final fantasy?
But with your criteria, the answer has to be Tomb Raider or Final Fantasy

Playstation game as from Sony or third party?

Because third party had more influence that first in all Playstation history

If I look back to the raving 90’s (not that I remember much), I’d say that Sony really hit the nail on the head with WipEout, Ridge Racer and Tekken. Those were the games that all my friends wanted to play at the time. In fact, they were playable at some of the raves that I went to, in the chill out areas. They captured the vibe of the time.

Also, because the automotive industry was so exciting back then, GT captured the imagination of millions of want-to-be car owners.

Whichever game you or anyone thinks is the most important video game for PlayStation.

Nintendo and Xbox are simple to pick but as seen already lots of people have lots of different choices for PlayStations.

The most important doesn’t mean that its importance had a positive impact. In that sense probably Concord has been their more important game. With the potential to course correct the whole division, and hopefully kick out that Hermen moron.
Whilst I agree with your general point. Herman came in long after that game was already approved to release in 2024. Think it was in development for 8 years or something stupid like that.

On the whole, GTA fundamentally reshaped the industry's approach to game design and FF7's exclusivity was a major win, but if we're talking about a single game that truly started its impact on the PlayStation, I think we have to look elsewhere—excluding Final Fantasy and even Metal Gear Solid.

My pick would be Resident Evil.

As a franchise, Resident Evil's pivotal entries, 1 through 3, not only defined a new era for survival horror but also set the standard for 3D third-person action games. Its massive success propelled Capcom to become Japan's top publisher, solidifying their status as a key partner for Sony and shaping their continued dominance in the industry.

Already covered but; Metal Gear Solid, FF7, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, GTA 3. If limited to one, then FF7

It has to be FF7. Most people expected Sony PlayStation just to be the next Phillips CDi or Panasonic 3DO, at first.

Getting what was always considered a "Nintendo game" franchise as a PlayStation exclusive was huge. The fact it was immediately recognized as one of the best videogames ever made was just as big.

More importantly, for the worse, was UC2. It kickstarted the trend of third-person movies that would eventually plague the entire PlayStation catalog

yeah I like the game but I hate the milking and casualizing of it.... and most of playstation
Yup. Exactly how I feel. I love TLOU1 (I'm mixed on 2) and mostly enjoyed the Uncharted series. But that's doesn't mean I want every video game that Sony makes to copy their homework wholesale.

It's weird having "the most important" of a console brand since sales of a game could be a reason or just influence overall with the brand itself

The original PlayStation got the adult attention that Mega Drive had before. It was a combination of things. Can't really pick one since influence and sales were very close to lots of games. People say about FF VII, but the whole RPG scene was the differential of the PSX - and a lot of people didn't finish game, so... Gran Turismo was the most sold of the console, but chances are that Ridge Racer is the most loved

PS2 got the same feel, but maybe GTA 3 could be the most of all even thou San Andreas was the most sold. I'm not really sure about that because I don't think GTA 3 would have the same impact to the industry if was a console exclusive. I really believe that modding was the real point of the franchise and this gave a domino effect, with more people talking about it, and more people getting a PS2 would have the mindset that "it needed this game, and this game, and also this game", leading to San Andreas, but didn't lead to that much people really caring about the game per se

PS3 whoever I can say Last of Us was the pinnacle of the whole generation, but I really think that was Uncharted 2 since is a PlayStation studio from the root, the real predecessor of LoU and basically every future PS Studio [over the shoulder] game from now on, and a great game first and foremost - the first Uncharted is basically a pretty looking PS2 game. Let's face it. It's rough.

PS4... we got lots of 9/10 games. Games run better and looked better than ever, but a whole bunch of PS studio games were different versions of Last of Us. We didn't have a true landmark game of the whole generation - not just PlayStation. PS5 it's going for four years and it's even worse since all games are just PS4 2.0 games
