What game are you currently playing?

When Death Stranding originally released in 2019, I platinumed it on the PS4. And just now, I platinumed the PS5 port of the Director's Cut on the Pro (took about ~200 hours). It's an awe-inspiring game experience with amazing presentation, uniquely addictive gameplay, absolutely stunning graphics, and a story with many unraveling plot twists. Can the gameplay be boring/tedious at times? Sure, but listening to podcasts/music/Youtube while traversing the absolutely-gorgeous landscapes made those situations relaxing and rather enjoyable. Also, the game's ending cutscene is, by far, the most emotional I felt in any game I played (as a full-grown man, I literally had a few tears running down my cheek).

The biggest release of 2025 (the sequel) will be coming out in a few days. So, to say that I'm highly anticipating its release would be a massive understatement. I've been on a complete media blackout (not even having viewed a single screenshot), as I feel that's the best way to initially experience any new game (or movie). I've never been a Metal Gear Series / Kojima fan, but, for some reason, the meticulously-detailed, open-world, sci-fi horror aspects of this series clicked with me.

Halfway through Cyberpunk. The mission I did yesterday elevated the game from good to great. The main story quest is very exciting and interesting.

Lunar: Silver Star Story
This is my first time playing. I couldn't get enough of JRPGS back in the day, but this one completely passed me by. I adore the anime cutscenes, which is good, because there seem to be quite a lot of them. The characters are all likeable so far, the combat is great, and the music is beautiful. Looking forward to experiencing more of the story.

Elden Ring: Nightreign
Played a couple of hours, all solo. Managed to get to that first main boss and got it to around 60%. Good fun.

Just completed the Thieves Guild in Oblivion. Best one so far. Loved how different it was compared to the Fighters and Mage Guild and that you barely even had to kill anything.

Now to the last one before I takle the main quest… The Dark Brotherhood.

I've been playing a lot of AC Shadows this past week. There are things to criticize (would it have killed them to build a few more roads through the mountains?), but overall I'm really liking it. The two lead characters are both done well, the overall story is good, and I'm enjoying the historical setting a lot. It does seem to be less bloated than Valhalla but I'd like to see them do more to cut down on that in the future (I'm 50 hours in and I'm definitely ready for it to wrap up, but I guess that's partly on me for doing a lot of side things). There's been about two too many "here's another group of 5 assholes to take out" threads.

Edit: After about another hour of playing, I opened up two more "kill this group of 5 assholes" side missions. Sigh. They just can't help themselves.

And why or why not would you recommend someone else to play it?

Please do not post unmarked spoilers.

I am currently playing Wolfenstein 2 on Xbox One X.

I would recommend playing it. It has surprised me with great storytelling and a mature but coherent plot. The visuals are stunning to me, and it is loaded with interesting personalities. Off the wall but good.

I do not recommend it if younger. The game is very mature in its themes and plots. This is definitely not a game for younger, not matured kids.
What % would that be here on GAF?

Anyway, for me Super Mario Wonder. Amazing game!

Mafia III
Finished 1, 2 + dlc Joe's Adventures and now playing 3. Want to complete before Old Country on August.
First time with this title. Story is not bad. Unfortunately they wanna be like Ubisoft Mafia game.

Getting to the end of Shadow of War... and yeah I can see how it could get rather obnoxious as to trying to get you to buy MTX :messenger_winking:

Doesn't help that the controls aren't nearly as tight as the Arkham games.

Popped in another classic while waiting for Raidou Remastered.

Asura's Wrath, X360 version. BC compatible.

They definitely don't make big games like this anymore.

Almost complete with Ori 2 - at the very final dungeon or temple so to speak. Great little game, though some aspects of it feel routine, if you will. I like both of them a lot and hunger for more 2D experiences, presently.

Lunar: Silver Star Story
Played around six hours now and really enjoying it. In fact, I haven't enjoyed a JRPG this much in quite some time. I was worried I was growing bored of the genre, but this has made me think otherwise. I think it's the simplicity and a little bit of 90s nostalgia and vibe that's doing it for me.

Star Wars Outlaws
Bought this cheap after using my reward points at The Game Collection. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan; I've seen all the movies. watched The Mandalorian, and played a couple of other Star Wars games, but that's about it. Only a few hours in, but I've enjoyed what I've played so far.

Split Fiction. It's nowhere near the fun of It Takes Two. Clunky gameplay, especially during the SF sections. And boss fights are awful. Not fun at all

Welp, finished it. Left feeling ... okay. Not exactly satisfied - the earlier parts of the game were the best. I think there is some small issue with abilities - where there clearly are some upgrades you aren't supposed to be able to reach without certain abilities, many times you can with some trickery - not that it really matters. I like that they tried to add "more" to the game systems, but in the end a lot of it felt like fluff to me. I think the exploration and experiencing of the world was better in the first game, but that could just be a bias because 2 was "more of the same" but more of the more. Still really enjoyed the games, would recommend them to anyone into that sort of thing. Still not sure what's next.

I want to play night reign, but ER and SOTE are taking up all my time. Actually, I think I need to get acclimated to the type of game NR is, which is... the mixed race offspring of an open world fantasy souls game and apex legends. I cried when I saw the guy painting in the round table hold ruins. Those are my guys...

So having finished Ori and Ori 2- I'm really thirsting for more 2D gameplay as I mentioned previously.. a few I'm considering are the following:

Tails of Iron
Ender Lillies
Prince of Persia the Lost Crown

What are some of you fellow's thoughts on which I should jump into next?

Alone in the Dark 2024. I still haven't finished it but I'm finding it quite good. It's on PSN Plus for those who haven't collected it yet.

I also just tried Aliens Dark Descent which I got on Plus earlier. It's promising so far and seems like it might be a decent Aliens thing.

I picked up this month's humble choice since they sent me a coupon for $6 and I was interested in the Soul Reaver Collection. I tried out a few of the games from the bundle today.

Nomad Survival - I like the concept of it not limiting the amount of weapons and passives you can equip, but just about everything else is subpar. Terrible music, lackluster visuals, and it never escalates as well as Vampire Survivors.
Dungeons of Hinterberg - I got a little farther in it than I did when I tried it out on game pass. I just find the combat so incredible dull and it's a game that likes to talk to much.

Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood questline is god tier. Skyrim had better gameplay but Oblivion's world was much better, and those quests are a big reason why. Enjoy it, listener.

I've started Death Stranding. I've played the first few hours, it seems like an interesting game. For sure it's unique in what it's trying to do.

Playing Borderlands 1 on Switch 2. First area. Feels like I've played a lot, but I've read that the first area is only 10-15%. The 30fps feels jarring but portability is a big plus.

Finished Chapter 12 of Rebirth, I don't understand how they filled this one just like Remake with filler chapters (namely chapters 10-11), which makes difficult to continue the game. But I'm near the end (I believe) so that's good.

How was that annoying fight? Yeah you know the one.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die - Very similar to Hades. Combat is extremely good once you get used to it. I'd say it's easily my favorite roguelike since Hades, but it seems to very intentionally mimic that game's structure. You know a combat system is extremely well designed when you get to a boss and get wrecked and feel hopeless, and then after multiple tries learning its patterns beat it without hardly getting hit. Art style is very good for the most part. The power up system is also really well done with a lot of powers to mix and match, and you have to combine them all on a game board and match colors to power them up. Highly recommended for fans of Hades. Lots of permanent progression, multiple weapons, story mixed it well.
Doom: The Dark Ages - Beat stage 17 yesterday. Game is still really cool. Noticing a lot more music tracks that deliver. Cosmic realm is neat.
Rematch - Played a few more games. Extremely addicting and fun.
FBC - Didn't play the last few days, but I honestly really like it. Coop objectives are pretty intricate.

Job Simulator
WTF, almost unplayable.
VR2 seems to absolutely require 2x2m playspace, which I just don't have right now. Even though it definitely does not need that much. An arms length around you is all you should need.
VR1 starts without any BS requirements but tracking is barely working, no matter if I move the camera on top or under the TV. Everything requires me to move out of range of the camera, because i have to stand way too close where the viewing angle of the camera is very limited. I managed to finish it but with a lot of frustration. A game that is very basic and only delivers a few mediocre jokes.

Remnant II
I guess not having played the first one hurts the immersion a bit because it just starts in the middle, not much introduction at all to anything. Only played the first segment so far. Felt okay, but having enemies that attack you melee style in a shooter was a mismatch in Rage imho and this immediately reminds me of that.

Vampire Swansong
It is kinda like The Council, which wasn't great but rather unique. Like Remnant it misses a bit lore, kinda requires that you already know World of Darkness / Masquerade a bit. Other than Vampire in the title it does not explain much, although maybe a lot in text form. Which is just terribly small. Would need to test it but this via remote on Portal or a rather small tablet or phone would be unreadable. The story starts kinda meh so far but maybe a bit better than the Coteries of NY thing that was very boring and kinda going nowhere with its story.

Finished AC Shadows. My overall thoughts are the same as I posted a few days ago: great characters and setting, good story, less bloat than previous entries but still too much. I will add that it had a lot of moral ambiguity (there are some key points where you get to choose whether to kill or show mercy, etc); I was looking at a Veilguard discussion on another site last week too (a game where your dialogue choices are agreeing in 3 different tones), and the difference between the two games was striking. AC Shadows handled it the right way. Moral ambiguity is good!

On to Baldur's Gate 3. This is the 3rd time I've started it, but this is going to be the one that sticks.

Playing SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered now. During the Squaresoft Renaissance, I played this game hardcore when I was a Sophomore in High School. The hand-drawn visuals are SOOO good remastered. The battle system was VERY obtuse for me, despite my love for SaGa Frontier 1. The weapon durability puts a big damper on things and having an item limit too (although you have storage), although I know it's related to the lore of the game too. Starting playing it and I felt like I was a kid again. Good QOL changes too.

Finally started a game properly. Indiana Jones and the great circle.

First off, surprising to me that the FSR4 was working right out of the menu on linux. Last I checked maybe last week, that wasn't a thing. At first, I thought fsr3/quality/4k was just better than I thought for some games. But I got suspicious after a few hours and set it to performance. Yup, that's definitely not fsr3. Looks pretty damn good!

On the subject of graphics, the environments are just amazing. Blowing me away all day (I played all day). That's good because a lot of what you do is just putz around in them.

Funny, I just played robocop and I couldn't think of a genre that would properly describe it. Well, this is another game like that! The composition is very close. Combat is de-emphasized. There are puzzles, but only enough to consider them kinda sparse. Most of it is a faithful revisit into the world of the movie. I'm liking it!

Just had a "tense" re-match with Bowser Jnr, on Mario Power Tennis for the Cube (playing on the Wii) it's got some fun "Power up" features, and still holds up to this day! Though I lost again on the rematch, maybe I need to choose a better character than Luigi...

Playing Borderlands 1 on Switch 2. First area. Feels like I've played a lot, but I've read that the first area is only 10-15%. The 30fps feels jarring but portability is a big plus.

The pacing in BL1 is really strange, and it depends how many sidequests you end up doing. Lot of samey areas too.

Finished Chapter 12 of Rebirth, I don't understand how they filled this one just like Remake with filler chapters (namely chapters 10-11), which makes difficult to continue the game. But I'm near the end (I believe) so that's good.

Chapter 11 where you play as Cait Sith was trash I understand, but what was the problem with chapter 10?
