What game has your favorite beach landing/invasion level?

There are few wartime scenarios that lend themselves to setpiece game design better than beach landing invasions in the style of D-Day cinematography popularized (some might say perfected) by Saving Private Ryan's opening 20 minutes. Fighting to not only survive but also encroach and conquer against seemingly insurmountable odds makes for thrilling game design opportunities as well as room for memorable scripted sequences that immerse you further into the chaos of combat.

I'd like to discuss games that managed to pull off the "beach landing" archetypal mission design with aplomb in this thread.

While I'm sure many of you will understandably nominate the likes of Silent Cartographer from Halo 1 or one of a handful of D-Day missions from the better entries in the Medal of Honor series, I'm going to use this OP to highlight the opening mission from Killzone 2.

Killzone 2 (Mission 1 - Corinth River)

I just revisited the opening missions of Killzone 2 this afternoon and was reminded of how superb they were. The buildup to the invasion of Helghan is short but effective, and you really get the sense that these soldiers are thrust into overwhelming odds that they didn't quite expect and forced to adapt and survive. Sure, the cast of characters is a bit generic and not always likable, but they are characterized well here and you really feel like you're descending into a hellish war with your close-knit band of military grunts. The ISA invasion of Helghan is presented in that heavy, gritty type of militaristic sci-fi that evokes memories of Starship Troopers, and I like that.

But now I'm rambling on. Check out the video links below to get a sense of why I'm nominating Corinth River as my all-time favorite beach landing segment in gaming. The entire mission is great, not just the initial landing and beach securing sequence. Few games before or since Killzone 2 have been able to convey such a believably chaotic, violent, and tense warzone sensation. All in this first mission you're introduced to KZ2's strengths one after another. The superb Helghast AI that is legitimately threatening at all times. Gunplay that feels weighty and impactful with enemies and the environment both reacting realistically to every gunshot. A natural implementation of cover mechanics without it slowing down the gameplay to a fault. Top-class sound design and mixing. And of course it's all presented with a level of visual flair unmatched at the time and still very impressive to this day.

Halo: CE for me. Riding the Pelicans while the main theme kicks in as Covenant are firing on you was pretty epic.

Yeah this is definitely the best, the various WW2 normandy levels are amazing as well but mostly for the emotional impact of the real life event while the Halo level is genuinely a joy to actually play and transitions perfectly in to one of the earliest 'open world' style fps levels ever made (and still the best).

Looking forward to COD WWII for their version of the Normandy landings

Yeah this really needs an update to match current technology. Regardless of how the game plays, there is little doubt that it will look fantastic compared to previous WW2 era games.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Multiplayer Demo, Beach.

It's fantastic. I played it for years after the game came out and still found matches.

Definitely the beginning of Silent Cartographer (Halo CE). There's just something about its seemingly purposeful evocation of the D-Day landings that just makes it feel awesome. Even Bungie themselves couldn't top it when they tried it again during the beginning of Long Night of Solace.

There should be more tampons in gaming
Killzone 2 is the best in my mind and it still passes for current gen. in those gifs.

Don't know if this counts but:

Planetside.

Had multiple transport ships loaded up w/ fighter escorts. A few minutes of travel. Everything quiet then BHAM. Taking fire, escorts engaging with AA rockets from the ground and we see our forces fighting on a beach trying to push towards a bridge.

We land and our ship gets destroyed soon after. But there we are. Fighting.

What I loved about it was it wasn't really scripted. It just happened. One of the best nights of gaming I ever experienced.

I mean...it's gotta be Conker, right?

That was the one that first came to my mind and I got mad at my brain.

I recall Medal of Honor: Allied Assault blowing my mind when I played it back then.

I had a really good time more recently with Wolfenstein: The New Order. I think the feel of shooting in the game is fantastic and there were plenty of little areas to wander off the main path in the trenches. I guess it mostly bypasses the beach side of the invasion since that's the most linear section but I still think it has enough elements to count.

Call of Duty 2's Pointe Du Hoc. A more unique take on D-Day landing taking place elsewhere outside of the typical Omaha Beach setting.

I'm at work so can't post pictures, but my favourite has to be the siege at the start of The Witcher 2.

Going up the siege tower with Foltest, then charging onto the walls... fantastic and something I missed from 3.

As of now, it's Call of Duty 2's Pointe Du Hoc. Personally, I was disappointed in the lack of a beach invasion for the Battle of Gallipoli in BF1 MP. I would think that could have been an amazing operation mode. Looking forward to CoD: WW2 D-Day mission/ MP map.

Two other games that deserve a mention.

Mass Effect 1: the whole sequence after you find the conduit is a giant linear invasion set piece.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Chapter 8 spoilers.
Its an invasion but you are on the defensive, while being massively outnumbered. Luckily you arent outgunned. So the player Skells up and kicks ass.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault. RTCW beach was nice and it's from my all time favourite multiplayer game - but in terms of grand battles and direction it can't compare to MoH.

I know everybody else has said it, but Halo CE purely for the fact of you didn't need anyone to tell you your objective. No waypoint or anything, it was a feet drop onto the beach into "Shit, Aliens! Let's kill these fuckers!" I didn't need to feel any emotion other than "Let's kick ass" it was a thrill for the first time.

Allied Assault for me. That level was unforgettable for me, haven't played it in a long time but I still think about it sometimes.
