What game were you expecting Destiny to be?

Borderlands without the over the top humor, with Halo style combat, and a more "open" approach to multiplayer. It delivers on those things except multiplayer, which is killed by their insistence on shutting down voice chat in most cases. The only other thing missing for me, and it's a huge thing, is building a world that I care about. They put you in a world that looks really interesting, but they tell you nothing about it other than "there are bad guys, you should kill them". Even if the lore is bad, I'd rather it be there just so I'd have that extra pull to keep going.

I was completely disinterested until the Alpha. Everything they showed (or rather, talked about) before then just seemed really dull and full of shit. They never discussed the competitive multiplayer and I figured it would be half assed.

Playing the Alpha I saw the dull mission structure, but enjoyed it nonetheless. I was sold with the PVP though. Absolutely fantastic gunplay, powers, traversal, and overall sense of momentum.

I think the majority of people disappointed with the game are those who were sold on the initial marketing before the Alpha/Beta.

I was expecting a social element.

Prox voice, more emotes, crucible chat, player trading, passenger mounts, story matchmaking etc are ALL missing from Destiny.

Exactly the game I'm playing.

Yup. Played the beta was a little bit disappointed in the AI and how some areas would sound alarms and make you go back in 5 seconds because you were not intended to go that way. I've yet to experience later in the full game. The AI seems better now too but they can still get pretty stupid if you just go back to a previous area they lose track of where you are even if you are in plain sight.

But overall my friends and I are addicted to the game and love it.

Orginally, it seemed to be a more open world type game, or at least vast areas to explore, based off their comments when demoing it about going far off into the distance. After the alpha, it seemed like a highly polished co-op shooter with more enclosed, yet large levels.

E3: wide open missions where you ended up at a central hub with firefights/pvp ect.

Watching IGN: Super linear borderlands, kinda depressing they kill a boss then 10secs later takes u to a screen asking u to end matchmaking.

I honestly thought it was going to be like Halo but with some more open world aspects. I didn't think it was going to be as mission based as it is - with constantly respawning enemies. Honestly I'm just trying to sell my copy ASAP. I don't know why I always get caught up in the hype and blind buy games like this. Pretty mad at myself.

I expected a world like shown in the E3 2013 demo where the dude said if you see it you can go to it. I tried going to a section that was on a island that had a set of rocks getting to it. I died when I landed on the first rock because it said I was out of bounds. I was also expecting a regular shooter before the beta, not firefight the game.

From the beta I figured the whole game would pretty much be like that.... But before then, I thought there would be much more interesting exploration, more areas, weapon types, and a traditional "AAA" story like they had said.

Its exactly what I expected it to be, because it's really just a more of what we saw in the beta.

It surprising to me that despite the alpha and beta and their millions of dowloads, we're still seeing so many people saying that the game wasn't what they expected. Its been clear for months what Destiny was, and I'm not sure how so many gamers and press people totally missed all that.

Though I guess it is yet another great example of how powerful hype is when selling a game.

I was just expecting Borderlands with realistic graphics and Halo style shooting mechanics, with randoms popping up in some parts of the game.

So pretty much what we got, though the story and story presentation are disappointing coming from Bungie. Otherwise I'm loving the game.

On the main game:

I expected a slick, thoroughly modern co-op fps, with rpg elements, and a science fiction based rationale for why the player is going to be killing shit for 20 hours.

I was hoping that the story would be really good, and the universe as deep as Mass Effect's. I was also hoping there would be interesting weaponry and armour a la borderlands. Since it has neither of those things, I think I'm done with it even though I still have about 25% of the story missions remaining.

On the PvP side:

I expected a rock solid, finely tuned and balanced skill based game that ignored the CoDification trends from 2007 onward.

What we got was an unbalanced, gear-as-perk system that isn't very interesting or new.

Pretty much Guild Wars 2 + Mass Effect + Halo. I ended up getting a watered down Halo + Borderlands

Pretty much this.. Although I do like it, I'm having a great time and the potential is there, it's just falls short.. I was hoping that this game will hold me over until the division but I guess I'm gonna have to find a new game or two before that gets done.. but I digress..

I give it 7.

Haven't played it, but based on impressions, I was expecting a really strong narrative and compelling myth and good storytelling for a FPS.

That's what they were promising and hyping.

I thought it would be a semi open world shooter you can play with friends, well at least thats what I got from playing the alpha and beta

Is anyone playing this solo? Is it any fun?

The first time I heard about this game I hoped it would end up being like Borderlands. But it's not.

Also, I was hoping for a lot more player customization options....

Most importantly, I wanted a cool story. I like the setting, but there is just fucking nothing in the game in this regard. Nothing at all. This has been the biggest disappointment for me so far.

My sentiments exactly. I played through Borderlands 2 a couple of months ago, and the amount of story and customization and characters in that game puts Destiny to absoltue shame.

A serious in tone sci-fi FPS with the BL2 amounts of story/characters/customization would have been fantastic.

I expected it to be like the Alpha/Beta but more....

And it was,

I have 2 other really close RL friends who both play with me on PS4... its exactly what we want... to play together shooting shit getting awesome loots on stunning locales...

Im LVL 21 and havent even touched crucible yet.

I thought it would be more Skyrim-esque in design but after the Alpha I realized that it is much more about focused encounters that are tightly designed to be fun with friends.

Destiny really delivers on being a fun co-operative/competitive shooter. It's not about having a really deep story or huge areas to explore. There are other games that do those things.

Story, world, and lore is by far the most disappointing thing. Lack of variety in missions is a real bummer, too.

Everything else is about what I expected. Good, solid loot based shooter.

I thought it was going to be a little bit of everything. I would spend some time on the story and then the rest of the time I would be grabbing loot, grinding, and doing public events. I thought a big part of the game would be doing tasks with friends.

It's what I expected. Part of those expectations were for expansions and a story that evolves over the next few years.

A good, Halo-like shooter with a few RPG and Exploration elements thrown in. I'll be honest, I'm quite pleased with the game but my expectations where in check. I never imagined it to be any more than what it really turned out being. Massive loot? I got Diablo 3 for that. Full scale MMO? I'm subscribed to FFXIV.

I really do like this game for what it is. It's not perfect, but a lot of it's ideas are definitely solid and are a good foundation for further improvement into something even greater. After so much CoD and Battlefied, I'm really digging the style. Only thing that threw me off was the way the aiming felt when I first started.

I expected hands down easily the game of the year and while I am having fun with it I doubt it will finish in my top ten.

The story is a fizzer so far and the mission design is quite bland.I was expecting an epic story with great side missions that seem to have no point.

I would give it between a 7.5 and 8.25 based on my few days with it but right now I wonder where the 500M was spent.

I expected more life (both npcs and humans), a more open world of interactions, and more scale to the worlds.

I expected pvp to occurr in the main story mode somehow..

I expected what it would have been had they designed it with only the ps4 and xb1 in mind.

They game is more last gen then current. (the game runs well on ps3s 256mb of RAM for crying out loud)

Something with more exploration, more missions, more areas from the start (not DLC), and more story/lore in game- something to make you care about things.

I expected it to be exactly what it is. The media were clear and even Bungie were open. It was the consumers and social media who over hyped.

You'd think no one had heard of a new franchise before.

I expected Bungie were going to take what made Borderlands, Halo, and PSO awesome and mix them into some awesome-sauce. Instead what I got was a pale imitation of all three of those games with all the fun/life/personality squeezed out of them.

I expected a campaign comparable to a Halo game, tuned for solo play but also a fun-multiplier when played in co-op.

I had hoped the world would open up like a Skyrim light, with plenty to find through exploration including rare items, back-story and missions. Instead, I find piles of helium here and there and then - woah, a chest in the distance set precariously upon on a cliffside. I jump jet over there, pop it open and what do I find? Yay, more Helium.

I expected a ton of threads about it on GAF. It came with my white PS4, it's kind of fun. No expectations prior to.

A very fun and addicting game with a good story and lots of cool activities.

I got a fun game (not very) which I get bored after about 2-3 hours with a story that is shitty presentented to me in a kinda dead world.

I expected nothing and I'm still underwhelmed. Parts of it are neat though. I just still don't get why this has to be always online.

Theres not enough content or things to do for it to get away with that. I'm guessing that'll change over time but so far I'm content with how mundane it is

More MMO-ish considering how much they put it up.

I expected a Halo meets an MMO with a dash of diablo/borderlands for loot.

Unfortunately the only thing MMO about this game is the crappy story...
