What is going on on Giant Bomb right now?

Basically, a minority group got angry because they don't get represented in the games industry so they took Twitter to vent their frustration about not being hired and insulted people like the little kids they are, then a bunch of other dumb kids from both Giant Bomb and Game Informer went to twitter to attack those people. Then the crew got angry.

IMO, everyone needs to shut up and enjoy video games.

Both Dan and Jason are great, learn to embrace change. If you're in a minority group, learn to not take everything personal for fucks sake, the crew doesn't hate you, they just picked who they thought was the best for the position. If you're from Giant Bomb/Game Informer, calm down and stop being an asshole to others.

Everyone forget about this and move on.

Amen to this.

I can only speak to what I'm most familiar with. I'm not going to make claims about Spain, for example, since I'm not familiar with labor laws, hiring practices, or minority representation there.
Right, but you're making broad claims. I don't live in the US and what happens there does not apply to my situation.

The white male does not dominate China, as an example. If a white male runs into racism in China I feel as if you would brush it away without taking into consideration the different environment.

I really can't wrap my head around why people have chosen now to be upset about this. Why don't we lash out against every other media outlet who hires white dudes? Why is a tiny division of CBSi suddenly the target of all this dissent?

Gotta start somewhere. Just because you like this thing doesn't mean it's immune from criticism,

God, this is like the worst excuse that pops up in every single thread like this. "Why are these people targeting THIS thing? Why not all THOSE things over THERE away from THIS thing I like?"

You're right, why did people choose NOW to be upset about this? Why not next week? Or next year? Or even never? Maybe never is best for you and your schedule?

Maybe one of the worst things about this, is that any women or minority that possibly joins giant bomb in the future might wonder if it was just a result of this mess.

Also, if Giant Bomb hires a woman or minority people will just hate on them and say they are doing it for fear of repercussions or backlash from the community.

They are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

It makes a kind of sense. Even ignoring the reputation that Giant Bomb has for being more sensible and socially aware than most sites, the fact of the matter is that a group of white men are the faces of one of the most popular gaming websites on the internet, and when two slots for hirings opened up, they hired two more white men. And every aspect of those hirings that could be defended can also be strictly criticized.

If they say, "we felt they were the best person for the jobs" - then how can we be sure they were proactive, that they really hunted down the best hires? There are plenty of writers out there who aren't white or male, and they might do as good a job as these two, or maybe even better.

They didn't hire "writers".

At the same time, it might do nothing and conflict with the crew there, and not in "discussion" sort of way. We don't know, but saying having someone of a race of gender automatically improves the sight is shortsighted.

Trying to use their own logic against them is something a man would do. How dare you?

In what universe could Anita Sarkessan be described as an EXTREMIST? Her videos and points are always the most basic baby level feminism there is said in the nicest way possible.

Maybe extremist is the wrong word? I don't think it is. She's not violent or anything, she's just really loud and stubborn.

Holy cow. All of this insane hate because they hired people who happened to be white males? This is one of the craziest, most bizarre outbursts I've ever seen (regarding the tweets that have been shown in here).

Ah, the "fingers in ears lalala what's the problem I don't see the problem" approach, right?

Makes you really think about how much attention and admiration Giant Bomb gets, it's pretty cool in a way to see a site with a such a small team generate this much discussion.

How is this giantbombs responsibility? They're a small website who hires the most qualified staff. They hired Patrick because of his amazing articles at G4 and especially the breaking news about Infinity Ward going to shit. Not because he was white. It should be up to the bigger websites to become more diverse where they can spread their wings a bit and also train interns. There would have been 5000 white guys who applied and were tossed in the trash.

No one is asking Giant Bomb to take up the sword for a lone fight against this issue. However, if people had the same "oh well, that's just how shit is" mentality that you seem to possess, nothing would ever change. It's an incredibly lazy thing to say, and honestly just sounds like you're telling people to "deal with it".

You're just splitting hairs now. Of course one term does not cover different cultures universally and I never said that it did.

I still don't know what situation you're referring to or taking context from. Do you have an example or are you just creating one for the sake of an argument?

This very one? How do you think CBS is going to change their diversity policy if this escalates even further?

The issue is that this particular criticism makes NO SENSE when lobbied at Giant Bomb. People are picking the worst possible target to make a very real point, and devaluing the argument as a whole.

Guessing some members of the GB community lashing out at people complaining about GB hiring white males.

I don't get the problem, they could fill an office full of white males, not everything has to reflect the make up of society.

So to shut up the whiners there should be a white guy, black guy, Hispanic guy and a couple of women?

Best person for the job, hiring people to suit other people's agendas is nonsense .... fair play to Giantbomb for not giving into this kind of thing.

What's hilarious is that we're discussing the wrong issue completely. Dan and Jason getting hired has nothing to do with them being two white males. It's an irrelevant point.

The issue here is that Giantbomb hired two people who have been in the industry for many years. Instead of bringing someone new into the industry instead the trend of just trading the same old guard around from company to company continues which furthers the inclusive nature of the industry. It's the same problem across pretty much all industry.

Wasn't drew originally an intern? And now is a core member of the team and in front of the camera.

GB don't have any requirement to hire a 'new' person any more than they have a responsibility to hire a woman or non-white person.

I'm still waiting to see the alternatives people could offer up that aren't white guys to join GB and be a good fit for their video content. People have an easy time shitting on their decision but not offering any alternatives.

I'm not splitting hairs at all. You're basically saying that white males cannot be discriminated against because they are the majority when that is not true for much of the world.

You're equating the United States to the world.

I always see GB as a group of friends first that have a hobby in common and they bring that all together to entertain people. I am sure when they hire they are looking for people that fit into that group. You kinda have to have the same feel from all the people, else the site seems divided and messy. They are fine having different opinions but their work ethos has to be the same, else it falls to bits.

As long as they write and contribute to what makes GB GB , then it should not matter who they are.

I think the responses to that have been uninformed at best (or at least not stating what they know). It's the response those responses that I would classify as "All of this insane hate...".

This very one? How do you think CBS is going to change their diversity policy if this escalates even further?

That's not up to me or you. What CBS does in response to this is out of our hands. They're adults and can likely make decisions outside of the din of scandal and so forth.

I'm not really sure why a potential change to a diversity policy has you worried.

Didn't know Leigh Alexander hated everything Giant Bomb this much, but maybe she still gets hate? But her articles are always highlighted in Patrick Klepek's Worth Reading...

Leigh pretty regularly bitches about Giant Bomb on Patrick's facebook posts.

Ignorance is not an excuse.

And here's the point where I have to point out privilege like a Tumblr activist.

I mean really, you grew up completely disconnected from civil rights struggles? Come on now.

Did I say that "I" did, animlboogy? I said "not everyone." No jumping to conclusions please.

Either way, the hard attitude of "it's not my job to educate you" adopted by you two isn't going to gain your cause many new followers. It will do the opposite, and make people think you are just intolerant radicals or something who tell people to fuck off even when they feel they are asking an honest question.

I never equated the United States to the world. Show me where I did exactly what you described. No implications or misunderstandings. Actual words please.

This might actually be the most telling post in this thread.

No, everyone does NOT just need to shut up and enjoy video games. That's just proclaiming ignorance and saying "Everything is just fine for me! And if it's fine for me, it's fine for everyone!" I would hate to live in that world, where nothing gets questioned or new goals are made. In fact, the "Everyone just shut up" mentality is what is actively hurting the games industry right now. If everyone followed that, it would continue being a racist, sexist hellhole. Instead, we have threads where the majority call out Ubisoft for being FUCKING DUMB with their excuse of why you can't play as a girl in Assassin's Creed Unity. That's called progress, and it's something that needs to happen.

Second, you say to "learn to embrace change" but how are the new hires change exactly? It's more of the same. Unless by "embrace change" you mean "don't change anything at all." Because it seems like that's what you mean.

I posted basically this in the other thread as well.

Giant Bomb was not in a position to take chances on hiring people new to the industry.
Ryan died last year, and Vinny just left for NY, that left GB down to Brad and Jeff, and poor Drew pulling double duty. The suffered significantly with the lose of Ryan, and with Vinny leaving, it would be been dire. GB is a personality driven website, where most of the content is video and audio, they need people experienced with this, and people that are fun, and have great chemistry with the rest of the crew.

They specifically needed people to help fill the void that Ryan and Vinny left.

Dan just so happens to be good friends with Jeff, a super funny dude, and he has loads of experience doing exactly what GB does, making quality video content for GameInformer.
Jason is his friend, and his video producer that helped him with his video content.

The two of them together are basically a dream hire, the absolute best people they could have hired.

Maybe sometime down the line when they are in a better position, they can take some chances on hiring some new people and train them, but right now was not that time.

and?

I'd like to hear a woman on the podcast once in a while, diversity is nice.

I have to say I wouldn't .... most times I have heard gaming podcasts with women guests they have always been poor.

Diversity for the sake of it is wrong and not always a gurauntee of adding quality, doing things so a box can be ticked is poor recruitment policy.

Essentially people are saying that the two new hires don't deserve to be their because of their gender and skin color.

Some, like me, are simply saying GB would be a more interesting and possibly valueable site given more diversity, thats all.

It reminds me of the hub-bub around the LAPD when it was mandated that they had to diversify. That worked out amazingly well, btw.

This is exactly why they have to stay to secretive about the hiring process. I was surprised to hear them even announce they were looking to hire. Honestly it would take a special kind of woman to be able to fit into their group. Im sure their are tons of women that could fit that position but they just either havent met that person yet or the timing wasn't right at the time. Its not like they are being sexist lol.

But for their forum members to start taking to offensive really must piss the GB guys off alot and I dont blame them.

Gotta start somewhere. Just because you like this thing doesn't mean it's immune from criticism,

I think you're getting too worked up over a legitimate question. No one should be immune from criticism, ever, but when it happens it ought to be dissected and discussed if you want the conversation to go anywhere.

Wasn't Leigh Alexander on GB's E3 livestream a few years back? I figured she'd be cool with then or something.

Did they have a falling out or something?
