What is the single biggest lie ever to have been told in all of human history?

My vote.

The cause of a HUGE amount of shit. That decision fucked over hundreds of thousands of people and took the lives of a sickeningly large number of innocents. Everyone who supported this should be locked up for life.

Hmmm, I would have to go with the whole idea of Eugenics and racial superiority which lead to the ideas of Hitler and his justification for the Holocaust.

What did he die for?
Mouthing off about destroying the Jerusalem temple?

"Oh yeah, when I said that, I knew I was going to get killed. Then I would die for your sins BTW. All according to Keikaku"

I could imagine a much more glorious sacrifice, in front of hundreds of thousands summoned from all over the world, where Jesus would ascend to the Heavens in a blinding blaze of holy light.

Instead he was on a hill, and died becuase he didn't have freedom of speech. Rather lame, for the whole saving the human race thing...

For what it's worth, I agree with all of those who've chosen this.

GAF related :

My Girlfriend left here (Texas) on the 14th to visit her home town (Tennessee) with her sister for personal reasons. Anyway turns out she never showed up and just found out they found her car 30 miles out of town with the back of the car wrecked and all the windows busted out. Shes not been reported at the hospital and there are no signs of them anywhere.

I have no idea what to do.

My history is rusty not very good so I may be way off with this one,

In order to secure more return voyages, didn't Columbus continually lie to his Spanish funders -- them that were so intent on finding a better route through to the Asian spice-trade -- telling them that he had landed on a remote coast of India?

Oh that wasn't intentional. If he knew he had found a new continent, he would have taken the glory for it.

Also, he didn't discover America. Discounting the obvious fact that the continent was inhabited, Vikings probably came here way before that.

Of course Columbus didn't discover America. :P Discovering the continent's not that big a deal though. I'd be hard-pressed to accept any argument that claimed Columbus wasn't absolutely intrinsic to the amount of attention the new continent received forward from that point in history.

And ooooh, so he wasn't lying - he was just mistaken. Interesting.

"No one saves us but ourselves, no one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path but Buddhas clearly show the way"

buddhism is the biggest load of bullshit in history

As an ex-Buddhist, I wouldn't say it's the biggest, but Western romanticism certainly plays a role in distorting actual Buddhism on the ground.

bullshit is still bullshit, eastern or western buddhism

I know the OP specified one lie told by one specific person, but I immediately thought of the lie used the most throughout history. Most frequent usage, most easily believed by the person hearing it. This bad boy trumps all religiously related lies, political lies, etc., because it cuts across all ideological lines humanity may have. It gets no more primal than this, and interestingly enough, can only be told by one segment of the population: the female segment. That lie is:

"I'm cumming!!!"

I'd say the ancient idea that "glory" and "honor" could be gained by defeating an opposing army or person in battle was/is a pretty bad lie. The problem is it's still prevalent today to an extent.

Probably sounds a bit idealist, but honoring the killing of other people should not be allowed in under any circumstances.

I'd like to know more about your opinions on this, as they haven't been made very articulate or specific. What specifically about Buddhism is bullshit? And when you say "Buddhism," what brand are you referring to? Unlike some religions, Buddhism ranges from polytheistic to monotheistic to simply nontheistic/atheistic. The doctrine ranges from praying for salvation to practicing mindfulness and awareness so that you may live in the moment for the betterment of yourself and environment, etc. Lots of huge, central variations between, say, Soto Zen Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism.
I feel the same way about theistic Buddhism as I do about Christianity or any other religion. Nontheistic Buddhism, though, is a different story. I don't agree with a lot of other things in it, still, but it's better in my mind than certain other religions.
What's your take that makes it "bullshit" and therefore worthy of joining our list?

They were really racists; it wasn't a lie.

Bullshit isn't lie either.

The biggest one is "the earth is flat and the center of the universe"
Yeah, lol, poor ignorant people in that era. The funny thing is that some of the civilizations that were before that actually knew the same thing as us becuase they studied the stars.

Medievals: "fuk no! flat flat flat! dont go to the border or yu will fall" *trollface*

I can't believe people claimed that Amirix's demodding was GAF's biggest lie. Jbaird has been forgotten so quickly.

Obviously it's not as big as all the political scandals and stuff already posted, but my pet "lie on a humongous scale" is physics like Uri Geller who claim to be able to materialize things, read minds, levitate, and other such bullshit. A lot of my family are really into that shit, and it's super frustrating asking why they think people like Geller pointedly avoid scientists, can only perform under specific circumstances (including being unable to perform in front of unbelievers with their "negative vibes") and other obvious proofs of fraudulence just to be countered with "There you go again over analyzing everything."

Looking into psychics' credibility is overanalyzing, but these people spend hundreds on various books, cards, and readings. I'll never understand how people can waste huge portions of their lives and income on something and not care to question how real it is, I have "How am I related to these people?" moments pretty often.

Have you shown them the light of James Randi? If not, see if they would be interested in watching this.

Even after a mod has come and asked for it... it still goes on. There are some amazing people here that will just read a thread title and post.

Why would I have myself in ignore list?

Also, for Amir0x's case, check this thread and this thread (the one which got him demoded, a 3DS thread, ironically).

I personally think that it is a win win situation to everyone, he hated being a mod and we hated him for being one and flaming every thread; I am seeing now that the ammount of responses he gets are much lower and threads aren't derailed as much.

I'm also going to go with Santa...I don't really know how pervasive it is outside North America though. I do know that it's a lie I've pushed down to my own son as "tradition" and he will surely do the same to his own children one day. The funny thing is that to even say that it's a lie to a child would be seen as the highest form of being a douche.

Religion

Yes, sorry it goes against the OP's wishes but fuck me, that is the biggest and most apparent one.
Still don't get how this fits in the thread.

Everyone involved in religion is lying?

The Iraqi WMDs seem like a particularly influential lie, but I wonder how big a deal it will be when all is said and done. Going further back, I'll nominate the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The Soviets'- or Stalin, to be more precise, since there were warnings from within his own government- total trust of Hitler really set them up for a huge beating early in the war. That trust also, no doubt, fostered the feelings of hatred for the Nazis that motivated the USSR to fight such a disastrous, no holds bar war. I would imagine many of the record breaking lives lost in that front could be attributed to a lack of preparedness on Stalin's part to deal with the German blitzkrieg.
