What is your favorite Multiplayer game of all time?

The one I hold the most reverence for is Quake 3 Arena, especially the Rocket Arena 3 mod.

But I have to mention Half-Life because there were so many great mods for it. Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, and Action Half-Life to name some. I'd you owned Half-Life, you owned multiple great games in one.

Far Cry 1 demo on the 360 was pretty great. Never played the full game though.
Call of Duty Moden Warfare
Gears of War
Warhawk
Red Dead Redemption
The last of Us Factions
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Battlefield 3
GTAV
Battlefield 4
The Forest
Dying Light
World War Z
Battlefield V
Apex Legends

Thers a few more but I cant really get the names out. I played some multiplayer games on PC through my homes local network with my family, but no where near the amount of time I spent on onsole games. I can only remember F-16 flight simulator, Soldier of Fortune and I think the other was Tom Clancy Rainbow 6.

Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2
Quake 2
Gears of War
Mario Party
Any wrestling game, it's fun when you have 4 people.
Prefer local co-op over multiplayer.

Star Wars Galaxies

I had a ton of fun with it. Back when you could ruin people's fun and not get banned. I ripped off so many people, I ended up with a big bounty on my head from paid bounty hunters.

Can't pick one, so I'll list:

RTS:
  • Age of Empires 2 + Definitive Edition
  • Command & Conquer: Generals
  • Company of Heroes 1
  • Starcraft: Brood War
  • Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne (best Blizzard game)
Shooters:
  • Quake 3 Arena
  • Unreal Tournament GOTY + 2K4 (mod scene was incredible, so were LAN parties)
  • Gears of War 3 & 4
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla
  • Alienation
  • Deep Rock Galactic
  • Risk of Rain 2
Fighting Games:
  • Every Smash Bros
  • Marvel vs Capcom 2
  • Power Stone
  • Soul Calibur 2
Others:
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Every Monster Hunter
  • Core Keeper

Goldeneye on the N64 with friends will never be topped, but I also really enjoyed my years with FFXI and had a surprisingly great time in Warhawk despite not being into that type of game typically.

Mario Kart, Splatoon, and StarCraft would be in my top. Smash Bros. ranks high too.

I also have a soft spot for Battlefield 2 and StarWars: Battlefront.

COD Black ops 1&2, Halo 3 and other PS360 multiplayer games, it's hard to choose actually. MP felt so magical back then. I don't have the same feeling with PS4/PS5 MP games, I mostly play single player games these days.

Siege
Rocket League
Titanfall (MOHAA, COD:UO, COD4, MW2, BO2 all honorable mentions from the Zampella/West CODverse)
Battlefield 2
PUBG
Warcraft 3 / Frozen Throne
Mario Kart Wii

Perhaps my fondest ever gaming memories come from Everquest. This my world for many years, what 22 / 23 years ago and I still occasionally think about it.

Edit: I'll add a second. Chomehounds on the 360. Such a great little community for 6 months and such an underrated mech game.

A lot of the usual suspects have already been mentioned. The Battlefield series is certainly up there for me too. But my absolute favorite would be:

Company of Heroes 1

Felt like playing an actual movie to me back in the day and it honestly still holds up in my eyes.

Golden Axe (Sega Genesis)
Bubble Bobble (Sega Master System)
Streets of Rage
Turtles in Time (SNES)

Are my top ones, still play them often.

Hmm

Mario Kart 8 sure is great
Boomblox for the Wii is also amazing

TL;DR:
  • CS 2
  • DayZ

To be honest, I have to say it's probably Counter-Strike: GO / CS2 – there's no other game I've invested so much time into over the years and still continue to play.
Followed by DayZ – the summer of 2012, when the mod came out and kept evolving week by week – we were a group of more than 10 people who were online every day and basically lived in the game. It was just something completely different from anything else I had experienced in multiplayer gaming up to that point.
Other than that, I have wonderful memories of split-screen games like Mario Kart 64, Halo CE, Resident Evil 5, Gears of War, Army of Two, Kane & Lynch – but that time won't come back, and I won't be able to gather those old friends again to relive it.

Yeah, DayZ mod time was fun! "Anyone friendly in Cherno?" I am happy this game is still popular.

P.S. OP asked what is your favorite multiplayer game not gameS. We all played numerous titles throught history, dont get why people are posting 20 titles in this topic, chose one that you resonated with the most.

Counter-strike 1.6

Went to so many lan tournaments and had a ton of lan parties with friends, so many great memories, what a game!

Hard to choose one favorite because I have such good memories with different games in different eras of my life. Just choosing the highlights, I would have to say:
  • Maybe Mario Kart 64 with my brothers for childhood
  • Definitely Halo 3 in college
  • For the King with a work buddy while living abroad
  • It Takes Two with the wife in my newly married era
DIfferent games for different seasons.
