Can't really tell for sure tbh, if it's by hours played then it's 100% Counter-Strike (With hundreds of hours in every game apart from CZ).
But I have equally very fond memories of many multiplayer games, the ones that come to mind imediately are CS Source, COD MW2, BFBC2 and Aion.
In the early 2000's I had internet but it was quite shit so I was always more into singleplayer games.

It's Mario Kart

I could say Bomberman 64 back in the day, and I actually still do sometimes with my friends, but Mario Kart is the franchise that comes a game and people just goes in. CoD guys, Fifa guys, whatever. They all eventually go to Mario Kart

favorite, or most played?

It's tough, Perfect Dark, Mario party on the n64, TS2, SSX tricky PS2, Halo Xbox, Warhawk and Motorstorm PS3, Gears and Graw 360, PS4 Xone Destiny and Siege and GR Wildlands. PS5 XSX.... nothing, cause modern MP is lame.

PC: CS and all it's variants, CnC RA2, Civ 4 and 5 (don't love 6 and 7 sounds bad).

Mods: Elden ring Seamless co-op is amazing

That's all that comes to mind, there's plenty more in older gen

Really tough choice.

On one hand, there's MGO 2 which was so much better than it had any right to be. Some of those modes were amazing, like the sneaking or snake vs. everyone. I easily spent hundreds of hours in this game and would evangelize it to anyone willing to listen.

But more recently was Deathverse, the Let It Die spinoff. I loved that game and I was playing non-stop from basically the time it went live til when they admitted the game sucked and no one likes it and turned it off. I liked it, dammit! I was also disappointed again when they scrapped their tentative plans to rework and re-release it. Has any game cracked the melee-multiplayer niche, really? I guess maybe For Honor?

Most of my favorites were already mentioned like Ultima Online, BF:BC2, Twisted Metal, Smash, Splatoon, Warhawk, Mario Party, etc.

I'll give a shout to a few others not mentioned yet:

I had no interest in this game, but randomly gave it a chance and ended up sinking 400 hours into it before I finally forced myself to quit.

Tetris-99-NES-Maximus-Cup.jpg

Tetris is already addictive as a solo experience, but the attack system in 99 really adds to the intensity.

Nintendo has quietly been adding tracks, modes, events, and customizations to this one since it came out. A racing game with 99 racers shouldn't work, but it does.

Rocket League for sure, nothing else is reasonably close for online play for me.

Mario Party / Kart for local multiplayer. Smash Bros. back in the day but nobody I hang around with is good enough at it anymore. Not that I'm a pro or anything but it's not exactly pick up and play like Party / Kart are.

The old school batch from COD 4 to Black Ops 2.

Everything changed when it went next gen 2013… the feel of the maps, guns, movement.

These were the only games I played, once upon a time, was even 9th in the world on 1942 at one point (The girls loved it)

I personally don't think multiplayer games have ever really come close since, to me.

Tight gameplay, no modern pizazz, zero nonsense, no ADHD gameplay. Just pure fun.

Cant' decide between these 5:

Halo 1
Quake III
Heroes of Might & Magic III (hot seat)
Final Fantasy XI
Neverwinter Nights (the BioWare game)

Top Bottom
