What killed the console games industry?

I just looked over at some of my older magazines. What amazed me was when I saw the two biggest EGM issues ever: in the end of 1995, the Playstation issue, and the Holiday Extravaganza issue. And damn, they were more then 450 pages! Filled like books, with intelligent articles, and tons of content!

I now look at recent issues, and I am really sad: it's now nearly 25% of the same amount of pages, less and less intelligent features, bigger fonts, and fewer games.

What the hell did happened to the Console Games industry?

Was it the release of Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2? Cheapie games like Syphon Filter and the shitty Driver games? Cheap Console games like the D3 Simple Series? The rise of a PC game that would attract console, more mature gamers, like Half Life? Look at what 2004 gave us as for Console RPGs: Star Ocean 3, and what else?

It will always survives, but it just is not the same as it was before.

Exactly, my point is not the console gaming is dead. It's just how DUMB the other thread about PC gaming being dead is. The same applies to both sides of the coin because while the software itself has not declined, the magazines are all pretty fucked up now. But that's no indication that any form of gaming is "dead", even though there's an overall lack in originality and well smaller mags. Hell, blame the internet for the mags getting smaller. :D
