what next for First Person shooters ?

I feel Halo 2/Half Life 2 have taken the genre as far as it can go in its current form, I ask what now ?

Nothing. Half-Life 2 did it all. There will be no innovation until virtual reality or unless we're actually invaded by aliens in real-life, and all we have to defend ourselves is a crowbar. It'd be the ultimate adventure!

Since almost all shooters involve dead people, sense of smell is not something I really want in my games.

IT SMELLS SO RE-OMG *VOMIT!*

Bots.

Since Halo 2 doesn't support bots, I'm guessing no other game in the history of console videogames has either. Oh wait... some have.. there's Duke Nukem 64 of all things.. and of course Perfect Dark...

~looks at Perfect Dark and it's bot assortment~ ~looks at Halo 2~ ~laughs maniacally~

~looks at Perfect Dark and it's shitty framerate~ ~looks at Halo 2~ ~cries~

Halo 2's framrate isn't anything special, but Perfect Dark's was utterly atrocious.

Yeah, you're right. I mean, though, PD's is pretty bad, but it's far from unplayable, unless you go full 4 player split-screen and 8 bots. Then it's real bad. But I could still stand 4 player split screen with 4 bots. Still workable for me and my friends. Maybe even 5 or 6 bots...

I really don't understand why Halo and especially Halo 2 don't have bots. It boggles the mind.

Pfft, I've played PD with 4 players and max bots lots of times. It kinda sucks, but it's doable.

Oh yeah, I remembered another FPS that is going to rock...

Area 51

... I was very impressed with how great the demo of it was (from the OXM demo disk).

Well, I think I'd like a FPS that has less linearity but not less story. I'd like for FPS to become more epic in scale (perhaps you're a solider in war that spans planets). I'd like for more vehicle or ship usage in FPS (especially if they are as well executed as HL2 is) that allows you to travel to these other planets to engage in battles.

Basically I'd just like FPSes with more epic scale (storywise and gameplay wise).... I'd like to see an FPS in a LOTR like scale (spefically talking the scale here, not the time period).

I think Half-Life 2 does enough. Just give me more games like it. I really like how I can interact with everything. It's great. Well, I wish I could pick up dead bodies and lob them, but I guess I will have to wait for Half-Life 3 for that.

I think the next step would be to take "First Person" to the next level. I mean, if you go by the perspective you see in those games, my arms and the guns would be hanging out of my forehead. I want to see them come up with a true first person angle that really makes me feel like I'm there running around in those worlds blasting away at enemies. There's been a few things that are kinda cool, like letting me look down and see my legs(Arx Fatalis, Halo 2 etc.), but it's just not the same perspective you see in reality. I'm not really asking for 100% realism, but I'd just like them to try to emulate the human eye's perspective a bit more instead of the same old straight ahead only type of view.

They also like people have said, need to set games in more original places. Like how about another fps set in the ghetto, something like Kingpin, but something more modern and serious.......and actually features black voice actors!

i have a fear halflife2 is going to do what halflife1 did for fps.

does anyone remeber how long we were waiting for a halflife killer on the pc? remeber how red faction was suppose to be it and how it failed miserably. it wasn't until the ww2 fps's that we started getting good single player action again. of course we still had ut and quake3 which kicked much ass but those don't count.

Um...you can. You'll need the upgraded grav gun for that though

FEAR (time manipulation and enhanced environment interactivity when compared to HL2; might have some Killzone-esque "you inhabit an actual body and aren't just a camera on a stick" effects considering the flying kick etc.)

STALKER (free-roaming [one of the biggest things HL2 supposedly lacks according to critics], non-linearity, Fallout style gameplay elements, Doom 3 lighting in a real world environment instead of small corridors, etc.)

I think we may see some (r)evolutionary FPS titles on the DS once some genre experts set their teeth into it as well, but don't ask me what...

There still isn't any FPS out there that gives you that truly epic feeling of being in a war among literally THOUSANDS of troops. I assume that this would be done next-gen......

UC2 looks to be a step in a relatively new direction...at least, for multiplayer FPS games. Breakdown and Riddick represent this sort of crossbreeding of genres on the singleplayer side, too. As for future direction in the genre, I'd say that the kind of hybrid design mentioned above is the next big plateau.

Sounds like something a studio like Rockstar or DICE would attempt. While all the other mainstream devs are busy trying to push graphical boundaries someone is bound to push the envelope in areas closer to what you're describing. I'd love to be able to play a full-scale WWI shooter.

Star Wars Battlefront got close. At least, I felt like I was in a war with a hundred or so.

IAWTP. HL2 did it in terms of games. I might actually try to explore the outside world now. :P And it's not like we were expecting FEAR and Stalker to be better than HL2 anyways. So: Nothing on the horizon on any platform, real world outside your door. :)

So slower weapon reloading times than Killzone? Then the enemy bring out the machine gun in trench warfare, the game offers mini-games with the hundreds of other soldiers huddling in the trenches? And to break the monotony of cowering in fear of a single machine gun while in the trenches, covered in your own filth because you're afraid to even sit up, you hear a screeching sound and the gas attack begins. Does the "scramble for your gas mask or choke to death" become a mini-game too? So after an hour or so, the enemy eventually run out of ammo for their machine gun and the mad scramble to take the enemy's position happens. Enemy retreats to their seconary position (another trench) and you're basically where you started from, except a hundreds yards further than you were before!

WW1 FPS would own!

I'm tired of the FPS games that are based on past real-world conflict. It seems, to me, that there is little to gain by dropping in that sort of gameplay in these settings anymore. I'm kinda hoping that Brothers in Arms is the last one for a while...then, these talented studios can free up their imagination on original worlds and settings, where they don't have to tether the gameplay possibilities to realistic design. (Just started playing HL2 on my shit computer)

Planetside. The game kind of sucked, but about twice a night you'd find an epic EPIC battle involving hundreds of players, armor and aircraft. They'd ususally last about 15 minutes, and were almost worth the putting up with the rest of the game for.

F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

man, I hate those dots...

and Quake4 and Doom3 Missionpack...

There is enough coming.

And next next-generation will be much better physics, normal mapping on everything, Unreal 3 Engine and more objects at once.
