What the H have BMW done with the new 4 series?

Their current design team is legitimately terrible, the new Z4 looks awful as well. You know you've fucked up when Toyota, creator of the most boring cars on the road, out styled them 10x over on the same chasis (Supra).

The current model, for comparison

Of all the BMWs posted in this topic, I like this one the most, and I actually like the look of the car in general too. Kinda meh on BMW otherwise most of the time so hey.
Might be the angle of the photo though now that I think about it. The back looks a little short upon closer examination. Great photo, at the very least.

They're scared to change the styling too much because they want their automobiles to be instantly recognizable as BMWs but they're also out of ideas while still trying to maintain the iconic look.

BMWs are broken all the time and need to go to the shop frequently. Maybe these hideous grilles are meant as access hatches for mechanics to climb into your engine.

They stuck a massive grills on all the new models for the Chinese market, they love massive grills on "luxury" car brands... apparently.

And yes it looks like complete and utter shit.

I actually like it. They're pushing a futuristic aesthetic, almost cyberpunk and some brutal lines.

That's part of the problem though. The front doesn't match the rest of the car and it looks like two completely different teams designed the front and the rest of the car.

Here is a video by Frank Stephenson who has designed many of the most iconic cars in recent years talking about it.

They look like Lexus/Toyota from the last 5-10 years now; over-designed details and random edges on an overall bland body shape.

Honestly dont know why people hated that design on the Lexus, I didnt mind it at all.

On the other hand I expected opening this thread that the new BMW design was gonna be the same sort of thing controversial but overblown; nope that thing is just horrendous.

If I had to watch a video of Schmee introducing it I'd forcefully vomit my innards out

Holy shiiiiiiiteeee that's ugly. Glad I got myself a Mazda 6 a week ago.
Wait so you were in the market for a luxury car like a BMW 4 series but bought a Mazda 6?

These look horrid. Well the front looks horrid, the rest of it looks great. These have a very American design IMO.

It looks aight in natura, saw several so far. Not a massive fan but it's not as bad as most pictures show.

...hate me...
It’s pushing the envelope. I can’t say I’m huge fan but I appreciate the going out of the comfort zone. Read somewhere that the engineers wanted that even larger for all the sensors and shit.

Ask again in 3-4 years and way more people will like it.

BMW is a little more prevalent here and I can say that they tend to grow on you. First a solid furrowing of brows, after a few weeks you start to see it.

I'm sticking with my baby E82. Not my car in this pic but looks almost identical to mine (I have black apex wheels instead). The only other BMW I'd get is an M3, but that's a little too pricey for me.

Everything about the cars looks good apart from the grille (which fortunately looks less like a Hitler tache when the car has a registration plate on it).

From the back and side the cars are pretty sexy. I like the headlights as well. Overall it's not a disaster but takes some getting used to. When I first saw the pics of them head on without a registration plate I thought they were hideous though.

I never liked the BMW coupes and sedans. I thought about getting a X3 a year or two ago but decided against it.

So I've kind of change my mind and actually have started to really like the new grille, at least on the M cars. Might put down a deposit this weekend...
