Having followed / read about past live reactions to Investor Briefings, allow me to share the usual Reaction Cycle

1. Way too much hype before the briefings
2. The briefing starts, there are people liveblogging or twetting directly from the event
3. Since live blogs and tweets can't report accurately enough what's going on, infos are shared incomplete or with some misunderstandings. Not the journalist's fault, it's due to the necessity of following everything happening
4. This brings to chaos, mayhem, Doomed for reasons and over-analysis about stuff without enough details to get the whole picture
5. The Japanese transcription is posted: Google Translate becomes the weapon for the freedom from the shackles represented by languages' barrier. Or users who knows Japanese well enough to translate (oh, hi, Cheesemeister :) ) Still people following earlier, incomplete details
6. English transcription posted. No misunderstandings anymore, just crows and owned everywhere.
7. The cycle repeats itself every time a Quarter Investors' Briefing happens.

I like your optimism but I'm skeptical Nintendo is willing to release a lot of games throughout the year. I hope if HH and console are one and the same Nintendo becomes a lot less worried about releasing too many games in a brief period of time and maybe chills on not releasing games in January or July. Because I'm concerned they don't recognize well enough that their games are going to sell really well for the most part regardless and that if they are consolidating HH and console development it is going to feel like we are getting a lot fewer games if they are as concerned about releasing too many games close together as they have seemed to be in the past. If every game just says NX on it (for example), I don't think they need to be worried about gamss getting lost in the shuffle if they each represented a unique or singular experience with moderate to significant wide appeal. For example LBW and 3DW released on the same day. If both were playable on the same system I'd be concerned Nintendo wouldn't have done that. So I really just want to make sure consolidation doesn't mean significantly fewer games overall across HH and console.

As someone prone to hype over very little what's especially funny about maintenance hype is that I don't think almost ever has it resulted in anything concrete.

This is the thing, though. Even with those games I don't believe Wii U would have been significantly more of a success. We didn't get a console Pokémon (but as I think others will attest I suspect any upcoming NX mainline Pokémon game will be akin to a handheld game even if playable on console, because TPC has always focused on mainline Pokémon games being handheld experiences) and we don't have a new Zelda yet. Nor did we get an AC, though as with Pokémon above I think that's more of a handheld franchise (or it's become one over time).

That's not to say Pokémon or AC wouldn't sell well to those with an NX console also, just to say I'm not convinced they'll be playable on the NX console and further...even if a mainline Pokémon game was ported to Wii U and AC had a mainline entry and Zelda came out a bit earlier in the system's time on the market...I still believed many of the same issues would have plagued Wii U and even if it had sold a bit better, I don't think it would have sold exceptionally better. I think the presence and success of MK8, Smash and Splatoon prove that amazing entries of popular Nintendo games alone will not sell a system if the marketing, central gimmick, price, message, and name are confusing customers or not reaching or resonating with customers. NX will need a good gimmick (even playability across HH and console) and could really use third party support and as low a price as possible.
Nintendo since the N64 days have struggled with providing enough content for both their console and handheld. The only reason they delayed games in the past due to conflicting schedules was simply them trying to spread the game releases out so that it wouldn't be 6 months for a new release. If they can keep momentum up and release high selling games at a consistent schedule NX can do a lot better than Nintendo's current situation, imo. If you went by your example with LBW and 3DW, I'd say they more than likely would've released LBW in October and then 3DW still have the November slot. Nintendo is large enough that they have been releasing about a game per month between their handheld and console division.

Good points. My meaning was buzz among the hardcore.

I do not think it will have much third party support and I think Nintendo knows this which is why I have high hopes on the first party games.
Wasn't NX just recently rated one of the top 10 most anticipated products in Japan?

Being serious now. They'll talk about miitomo, smartphone games, sales numbers and upcoming Wii U and 3DS software. Then they'll do Nintendo account stuff and when it'll launch worldwide. Then you'll get a small tidbit about the NX which will be announced formally at an event in the spring time (March or April) and to please look forward to it.

In a few hours, we will hear about and see footage of Metroid Prime 4 for the NX. We will also see how it's compatible with NX-VR. Finally, we'll learn that NX also doubles as a Keurig.

I expect nothing except for confirmation that NX is also a Keurig

Yeah, that's usually how it goes. The Annual Meeting of Shareholders brings equally crazy reactions.

Wonder if we get any info on the QOL in the meeting. Probably gets a mention along with NX
Me too. I actually hope we do. But for the remainder of the year I guess all of Nintendos resources are spent on MX, mobile and current systems.

Aww ok

So last two were WSJ and the Survey stuffs (which shouldnt be taken as anything but qualifies in the rumor category)

It was WSJ quoting someone who saw a game running. More reliable.

The survey was nothing but speculation by GfK. Reliability in the lol area

It would be really cool if at the investors meeting we would get to see the final system in the same way as the SNES was unveiled all the way back in 1988, like this:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/smokehouse/Video gaming/SNESprotype2.jpg

Just the CEO and Miyamoto at a wooden table, casually showing off the new system.

Man, all this NX news is getting me feel like I'm 8 year old again :)

The really good old days. Man you get hyped just by reading the article. "The amazing Super Nintendo" The coolest thing is that it wasn't hyperbole at all, the SNES was amazing indeed! Hoping NX can have some of that...

Aww yeah, sure was.

Here's the complete EGM article from July/August 1989, based on the late 1988 reveal.

SNES graphics were life-like? Hmmm...they were/are gorgeous but life-like seems like a strange way to describe them. Neat read though.

Baten Kaitos is real dead unless some other developer decides to try their hand at it.

Honne's side of Monolithsoft is an asset house now. While that's a tragedy, it's probably the only reason games for the Wii U came out at all.

Why is the hype for Nintendo things so strong? I don't see this happening with Sony or Microsoft with such intensity.

Because they are the OGs in this game. Because they're mostly innovators in this game. Because of all the great nostalgic 80's and 90's games attached to our memories.

Believe me if Sega was still around we'd be as hyped for them as we are for Nintendo. It's like watching Optimus Prime vs Megatron.

PS and Xbox are great and all and maybe 10-20 years from now kids from this age will be hyped for PS and Xbox as we are for Nintendo for their nostalgic childhood memories.

You're generally sure that Microsoft and Sony are going to make safe, competent systems that deliver the traditional types of games people like.

Nintendo's a wild card. Who knows what the fuck they'll do. They're the friend with whom you share a ton of memories but you have to keep one eye on them at a party while chatting up someone else because they might just bite into a beer can and jump off the patio.

That's just the magazine-speak of the time. The real meat of the article was the detailed specifications.

Here EGM's next main report on SFC from two issues later, November '89, which was more about the software side of things and third party support.

I'm sure it would be a joint collaboration between monolith, Namco and a smaller EAD team.

I am more and more confident that nx in 2016 will just be a portable console released in japan, with a home console to follow next year, with both portable and home released in 2017 in the west.
And probably also the shared environment between the two will just be like ps environment where various games will be multi across the two systems with no particular integration of any sort, apart the hw be similar due to a non existent generational leap between the wii u and the next console, like the wii did with the gc
This will allow them to have portable (with a normal power leap from the 3ds) and the home very near in terms of power and development assets

Sounds plausible, people seem to forget that Nintendo adheres to their own timeframes and pace and not what fans and gamers want/expect.

Well, we do know the home console will be more powerful, thanks to Matt. But yeah, we can't assume that it's gonna be "much" more powerful. Then again, we do have comments that they didn't intentionally design an underpowered console this time, so I'm optimistic.

I had a dream last night that I got a hands on with the NX case design. It looked pretty much like a Wii U, but then I flipped it over, and behold! On the underside was a huge cutout like the Gamecube had for its expansion ports. This was obviously for the handheld NX. A true hybrid!

I'm not sure about Animal Crossing in the first 12 months because most of the AC team just completed AC:HHD, AC:AF and Splatoon. Pokemon may or may not make it as well. However I could see them releasing these within the first 12 months:

SMM NX- I don't think it'd be too difficult for them to get SMM on NX.

I'd expect other titles especially since they've been collaborating a lot with 3rd parties to develop titles.

Excellent post, thank you. I'm wondering though how SMM will come to NX. I'm assuming the default controller may potentially not have a screen in it. Are we anticipating a SMM sequel using a drag and drop method for those with a default screen-less controller?

Yeah... But you know it will happen again late february early march, when they will be about to launch the MyNintendo stuff and a large maintenance will be announced.

Haha. It definitely will. You're right. And that will be a rare instance a maintenance leads to something. I want to say the last time this happened was when folders and Wii mode-on-GamePad were implemented.

Nintendo since the N64 days have struggled with providing enough content for both their console and handheld. The only reason they delayed games in the past due to conflicting schedules was simply them trying to spread the game releases out so that it wouldn't be 6 months for a new release. I hope you're right. I do see your point but then when I see Nintendo traditionally avoiding January and June releases for handheld or console I start to wonder if they will be overly cautious about "flooding" the market with what end up being usually non-frontloaded evergreen sellers regardless. So I hope we get at least 1.5 games per month. Just to give the last three years as examples (counting retail games only):

2013 - 9 Wii U games, 11 3DS games
2014 - 8 Wii U games, 8 3DS games
2015 - 9 Wii U games, 10 3DS games

I excluded games that only came to one region (questionable practice, I know, sorry, but just for consistency's sake) as well as leaving eShop off the list because I'm hoping and tihkning we will still get a good complement of eShop games regardless of retail. You can see there are 20, 16 and 19 games respectively. If we get this many still I'll be thrilled. I think 18 retail releases is totally reasonable. I don't want it to go down to 12 just because there's only one system per se.

Wonder if we get any info on the QOL in the meeting. Probably gets a mention along with NX

Me too. I actually hope we do. But for the remainder of the year I guess all of Nintendos resources are spent on MX, mobile and current systems.

I'm hoping for this also. I don't think the "health division" at Nintendo will be working on products for NX. By this I mean the QoL & Wii Fit team. I assume they are still chugging along on QoL and that NX will not be focused on this kind of product. If they go for a new blue or even turquoise ocean I don't think it will be under the same health-oriented auspices now that QoL is its own thing.

Don't forget "other journalists quote bad translations of comments out of context as 100% fact, blast comments over the Internet in articles (that are copied by other shittier sites)". This will especially happen if there's a thread.

It's a moderately conservative prediction, but one I can't rule out. It wouldn't be much of a Revolution though if cross-play was only implemented similarly to what PS3/V already did ages ago. Dolphins want to visit the famous Cafe in Atlantis. @_@

I am surprised you expect the NX HH to only release in JP this year, though. I think that would be a missed opportunity for Nintendo as regional launches are more and more outdated AFAIK and the holiday season is much more important for sales in the West than it is for JP. Also, as I posted previously in the thread, Nintendo hasn't released a new system (excluding upgrades like N3DS) in only one region in a year for at least 15 years.

If that Nintendo patent for the clickable scroll wheels becomes a reality with NX, I could see those inputs being beneficial and useful for a game like SMM.

- Quickly scroll through different tiles and sprites
- Use the wheels to quickly lay down duplicate tiles/sprites. One wheel would lay down assets vertically, while the other wheel lays them down horizontally(sorta like an Etch-A-Sketch).

Speaking of the bolded, I would love an Etch-A-Sketch game/app where the scroll wheels act as the knobs. You could even shake the controller to erase your drawings. Add in different backgrounds and colors @ $4.99 for the whole package and I'd buy it in an instant.

Yeah, I guess I didn't come to SNES from pre-SNES but rather it was my first console experience. I imagine the perspective would be different from someone coming into SNES from previous hardware and having an interest in pushing the medium. For me SNES graphics were just what games looked like as a kid. Very cool, but clearly games.

Thinking about it, it is sort of strange because the first time I thought games "looked like real-life" was early PS2. From where I stand now that seems like a totally crazy perception.

Better than mine. I dreamt I found an NX dev kit which was basically a large GameBoy SP (Without controls) and the controls were on this thing (SCD) that looked like a cross between an NES controller and a REALLY wide cartridge. It slotted in the bottom and stuck out the sides.

It's ok. I had a dream I saw the dev kit and opened it up to see what parts it had instead of looking at a spec sheet lol. I remember losing my shit that it was more powerful than the PS4 and had high cpu clock speeds. Then I woke up.
