I was always curios why some people seemed to he so proud to not have a cellphone. I remember in the late 90's, only the rich had one and that it was associated with being. 'yuppie' so I can understand it then, but now?
By no means am I saying it's an essential piece of tech, but personal communication technology was always going to be worked towards. The way of the future. Why are people so proud to say, " I didn't get a cell phone for the longest time!"? It's not like holding out on anything tech is something to boast about. You only sound like crotchetty old men complaining about now vs the good ol days. It's not a status symbol anymore. I liken it to home computers. Back in the day, you were kind of fancy pants if you had a computer. You were kind of like at an advantage if you had one. But today you're at a disadvantage I you don't.
I know that it sucks sometimes to be reachable 24/7 and that's not how a cellphone has to be used, but people still use it as the lamest excuse ever to not get one. I think the adoption of the cellphone is so central to the way we communicate today.
I don't necessarily agree with it, but the cellphone is a very important device that has changed how we go about dong day to day things. I think one of the he's examples is just when you go out with someone. You can now do so without getting lost "ok you go there, I go here, call when you want to meet up again".
I can undersatand people disgusted at the overstated importance if the device, but that doesn't mean you have to be disgusted at owning one.
The survey is kind of dumb, because the technologies aren't really related and is loaded anyway. You may as well have the survey ask what would you rather give up: entertainment, communication, or entertainment AND communication. Furthermore it's not entirely clear what they mean. Giving up tv mean giving up video games and movies?
That said I don't have a tv.
