What's it with mums not wanting their sons to put on too much muscle?

My son started lifting too early and really fucked up his shoulder (growth plate injury) because he wasn't done growing and his muscles were getting bigger than they should have been.

Again anecdotal evidence, but probably not a bad idea to be careful if you are still growing.

Depending on how old you are, lifting weights and doing weight training can mess you up. Plus parents can use it as an excuse to say that oh you spend to much time training and not enough time on homework. Started doing weights at 17 but was able to balance work, weights, and social life completely. Homework in the morning, weights miday, free time then party time. Motto of life

This post started all NeoGAF and by the end it became BBforums.

Too much.
Waaaay too much.

I wish I knew. When I had my pulmonary embolism my mom tried to blame it on supplements. My doctor laughed at her, it was kinda amusing.

Hahaha. Ok.

yeah my mom also frowns upon me taking a protein shake lol it's cute,

they kinda know there are "prohibited substances" but they can't tell one from the other.

Guys really like muscles, huh? (Anecdotal musing)

Maybe she just really doesn't like the look. Not an uncommon opinion to have among women.
Tathanen probably has the right of it, though. Haha.

EDIT to add: Consuming nothing but protein shakes and boiled chicken would also raise any mother's alarm bells, I think. :)

My mother says the same, but it's because she thinks the rice, chicken, and eggs I eat are bad for you if you eat them everyday, and can cause health issues later down the road.

There is a definite feeling amongst some that working out = vanity or insecurity = lack of confidence = you can guess.

There is an opinion amongst many women that going to the gym is a sign of weakness/insecurity, which isn't attractive.

Is a muscular person more healthy than a lean one? I've seen videos of those hunter-gatherers tribes and they're skinny.

I usually hear it was an excuse that some folks tell themselves to not get active at the gym. "Don't want to get too huge" as if one week will go by and *poof* MY GOD, THE GAINS.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. :|

I've started getting more active at the gym and the most my parents said when I mentioned it was "you sure you want to spend the money on a membership?" I've been at it for a few months now and it hasn't really come up again.

It's a comment based on ignorance, the same ignorance that dissuades some women from working out because they think they'll suddenly become Schwarzenegger.

And also, when you start succeeding, people get envious of it and will try to bring you down with snide comments and jokes. Don't listen to any of them.

This sounds like one of those things people make a big issue out of as an excuse to feel persecuted. It's OK, really, you don't have to be told not to do something in order to enjoy doing it. Just do it for you.

I don't listen to my mom. I'm fit, muscular, squat and deadlift 2 plate +.

My brother listens to my mom. He is obese. I argue with my mom on a weekly basis on how she's destroying him. She is from her side doing her best, cooks healthy, but then serves it up with the most sugary desserts and encourages a lot of bread. When I get her to stop its only temporary. Fortunately my bro is getting a hold of himself and started saying no, going to the gym etc.

She's just trying to let you know she thinks your fine as you are. Her saying she doesn't want you to put on too much muscle is a lot more likely to not be taken as patronising "mom prsise" than if she was to say something like "I love you just how you are, you're my perfect special little man, don't ever change".

My mom said the same to me at one point. It's probably cuz she thinks it's a bit dangerous to lift too much.

In terms of the broader topic of "too much muscle", you likely won't reach that stage for years, and you'll have to work your ass off. But there is a medium zone that people prefer, not too shredded or big. Everyone has their own tastes, though.

Why are you using a drugged up pro bodybuilder, who has probably more than a decade of training and obvious site enhancements and PED use?

He's also dehydrated in that pic since he's either competing or doing a photoshoot.

I don't think my mom gives a shit (haven't seen her in a few months), but the middle aged lady at the grocery store register did.

I was buying a bunch of food one day, and it was like:

Peanut butter...chicken...oats...

Then she stopped and looked at the cereal I was buying. It read "good source of protein" on the package. She looked me up and down, then asked in a sweet little hushed tone "are you trying to make your body bigger?". Slightly embarrassed, I replied "yeah, a little, haha".

"My son is trying to make his body bigger". She sighed. "I think he's fine just the way he is". She continued to scan the items on the belt.

Musli #1 natural body power...eggs...brown rice...
