What's up with Capcom?

I realize there's lots of whinning about capcom in the megaman threads, but let's have a seperate thread for it!
They totally dropped the ball after kicking out inafune... they are steering towards SQUARE levels of incompetence. (Well probably not that bad)

Here's a dramatic list of things that puzzle me with current capcom:

  • What happened to Rival Schools?
  • What happened to Shadow of Rome!?
  • What happened to Cyberbots/Techromancer?
  • What happened to BREATH OF FIRE?
  • What happened to Godhand 2? (oh yeah, you kinda disbanded Clover, asshats)
  • What happened to Powerstone?
  • What happened to Megaman? (except for being cancelled and ran into the ground)
  • What happened to GHOULS AND GHOSTS?
  • What happened to Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest?
  • What happened to Darkstalkers?
  • What happened to Final Fight?
  • What happened to Resident Evil? (except for being outsourced to an incompetent studio)
  • What happened to Ace Attorney and why is it japan only again?

Shadow of Rome was a fucking excellent game and it was obviously set up for a sequel too. The combat in that game was so good, so gorey and so goddamn visceral. I can't believe they haven't followed up on it, with their MT Framework engine it could be great.

Hehe.

Anyway, blame the popularity of shooters and Monster Hunter.
That's basically all they'll do now.

Thet're working on Dragon's Dogma, which could wind up betterthan any of the above games *waits for tons of hate for the opinion*

You're forgetting Devil May Cry outsourced to a shitty studio
More importantly, the fact that that game still EXISTS, and MML3 no longer does. What kind of fucked up logic is that?

Dragon's Dogma could be a fantastic multiplayer game but it has no multiplayer.

Fucking Crapcom.

Interestingly, it's funny that people whine about the lack of new IPs and too many sequels, unless their favorite franchise isn't the one getting a sequel. ;p

Pretty much nothing on your list has anything to do with Inafune's departure.
Someone had mentioned to me one that Inafune was the person that pushed for Clover's closure. I wonder, is there any truth to that? I looked around and couldn't ever find anything, so it's likely just BS.

Inafune also pushed for our "new" Dante look.

Do I care about sales? I care about games.
I don't think the games sell poorly even, they just don't sell "well enough" for the marketing executives. Every company starts to falter when it listens to marketing advisers above creative directors with a proven history.

Dragon's Dogma could be a fantastic multiplayer game but It has no multiplayer.
Wow, really? I thought it was just going to be a medieval Monster Hunter. Interest to 0 now.

I can't believe how much they've fallen after being so awesome. Fuck you Capcom for Ace Attorney Investigations 2 and MML3.

Oh and fuck you for changing Dante and giving DMC to Ninja Theory of all developers.

The real question here is what happened to original IPs.
Dragon's Dogma? Monster Hunter? Dead Rising? Lost Planet? Last Ranker? Beyond the Labyrinth? The list of new Capcom IPs started this generation is long.

Rival Schools, I love this game...

What happened to Resident Evil? (except for being outsourced to an incompetent studio)

Well, Resident Evil Revelations looks like RE´s original games... (more or less, you know)

Was there a change in management or something? Or are they simply trying to release only "profitable" games now?

I'm wondering the same thing and wrote up and article for the site I freelance that is currently in the process of being edited. The whole Legends 3 cancelling sort of was the thing that opened my eyes to just how fall Capcom has fallen and it's too similar to how I feel SquareEnix has been doing this generation.

I blame the lack of structure in the companies once they get too big. SE lead boss bailed once it got big, Infanue hung on but finally caved in as well. They need to stay smaller and more focused, because it seems they spread themselves so thin and then things get lost in the process.

Props to them trying new IP's this generation, but they've been fairly shitty and less lacking of soul like something they thought up last generation.

I hope they can get it together more.

  • What happened to the Haunting Ground/Clock Tower/Onimusha franchises?

Capgod is an adequate moniker, if you think of the cruel and vengeful God of the Old Testament.

Nintendo and Capcom went to the same party together and both got drunk out of their minds, did tons of coke and smack, and effectively lost all semblance of intelligence.

Most of their business decisions make sense, what I don't understand is dmc, I thought dmc4 sold extremely well. Even SE knows to make a sequel to FFXIII when it wasn't really well received but sold extremely well, all they needed to do is build on the same game/engine and improve what they already have.

As far as MML and Clover stuff goes, if the people passionate about those IP (or the talent behind those IP) left the company, why should they produce an empty shell of a sequel? It would be Perfect Dark Zero all over again.

Its sad as they have such hot properties but honestly if there needs to be a dormant period for their classic lines it may as well be now until this realism CG polygon obsession dies down some. Cuz I fail to see the point if they are going bring back gorgeous looking classic games like the ones you listed only do the typical rocket knight like sacrilege. Even SF4 has way too much fugly and uncanny for my tastes. Someday better tools, engines and healthier industry perhaps.

Devil may Cry should be at the top of the list.

Thoes DmC trailers are almost painful to watch.

EDIT:
DMC3 is in the holy trinity of character action games (along with bayo, and NGblack i think)

DMC4 sold well, reviewed well, it wasn't as good as 3, but most of the complaints were directed at the stupid backtracking.

I really have no idea why they rebooted.

That's a reasonable business decision.
I apologize if you're using sarcasm and I can't tell, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen ANY positive reception to what has been seen so far of DmC at all. Meanwhile what was seen of MML3 was received overwhelmingly positively.

Was this an intentional Konami joke?
Whoops, no, it wasn't. I remembered that tri-Ace's new PSP game is being directed by the person behind Suikoden. But then I mixed up Suikoden with Breath of Fire and thought it was a Capcom collaboration. I couldn't remember the name of the PSP game, so that I named tri-Ace's 3DS game instead :lol

Well, cross Beyond the Labyrinth and put Ghost Trick at its place :o The point stands: You can critisize many things Capcom does (or doesn't), but a lack of new IPs isn't one of those.

I'd like to see a new Dino Crisis game (similar to the first two, and not some generic third person shooter piggybacking the IP), and a good Resident Evil game in a similar vein to the PSX era titles.

It bombed hard.
Probably because it wasn't marketed AT ALL. I didn't know of the game's existance until I bought it. And I only bought it because I love the setting and I saw that it was by capcom.
One of the PS2's best games.
