All will be purchased at launch, that much is promised. However, my uses of them will have very different levels of usage.
I'll start with my most anticipated on down.
Xbox 360.
With the original Xbox, it was the last system I bought. Now, it is my favorite console by far, of this generation. I love the PC minded attitude they have brought to gaming. I was raised on PC gaming as well, so I can appreciate seeing development teams like Bioware and Epic try their hands on a console. They can gain a wider fanbase than was PC gaming limits you from. As I look at this launch, it's crazy how much money I will have spent on it when November rolls around. I'm 25 years old, my gaming tastes have either changed or expanded. I can still buy a Donkey Konga or an Animal Crossing and have a fucking blast, but this is the also the first generation that I've come to love a realistic racing game. (Thanks Forza) I generally don't buy games anymore if they aren't online playable games. I love the spirit of competition and, quite frankly, I'm too old for the all night Goldeneye type nights my friends and I used to have. XBL is a fuckin godsend for me. Don't have any friends around, XBL will save the day. I'm married with 2 little girls. Therefore, I need gamers from all around to play games with. Not just that. Their consoles cater to the American gamer, game wise. My favorite genres are sports, RPGs, and racers. Look at the 360 launch lineup. All 3 genres are locked in pretty good.
You might say, RPG's? The PS3 will have those in spades. Well, let me correct that. Exclude turn-based RPG's from the equation. With the exception of Final Fantasy games, since their stories are normally worth finishing their games for. Grandia as well since I love their fighting engine. So, what is that? 3 RPG's for the system? Square will come with at least 2 FF games. Pretty good, but I can live without them if I needed to. I'd rather play a KOTOR or Neverwinter Nights over a FF game any day though. Along with the system's capabilities. I don't know about you, but I've spent many a day, cleaning, or doing other chores around the house with the music on my xbox playing on random. The VGA adapter thing is genius as well. Now, the controller. Controller S is the best controller ever made, this new one 1ups it. Your controller is supposed to be an extension of you when you play your games. Of all the systems, only the Controller S really accomplishes that feat for me. So, all in all, The power and capabilities, plus Microsoft's money and will to make this work = My favorite console for next generation.
Revolution
I've gotten used to the fact that they have reconcilied with not competing on a power level. I went into this generation thinking that the Gamecube would be there when the Nintendo games came out. I was never disappointed because I knew what to expect. Games like RE4, Super Monkey Ball made it sweeter. I expect the same from them next time out. Besides, they own the greatest franchise in history, The Legend of Zelda. So a +1 from me everytime out. They are pretty much the only guaranteed purchase for me every new generation.
Playstation 3
There is a litany of reasons of why this will probably be my least used system, but I'll be as fair as I can be in describing the reasons as to why.
#1 - The controller. I've never like the Dual Shock and I never will. Sorry, but looking at the newer controller gives my hand premature handcramps. I will never buy Killzone 2, 3, 4, whatever or I-8 because of the placement of the analog sticks. I won't bother with them. Main games to bring out competition will be for naught since I don't feel like fighting the controller.
#2 - The games. If you have noticed, the best sellers don't come from Japan. If you sense what I'm getting at, there will be a lot less exclusive games for systems, unless someone decides to start dropping moneyhats and I wouldn't bet against Microsoft winning most of the bouts. Turn based RPG love really died out with Chrono Trigger. So, that 'advantage' is nonexistant to me. Others might say, what about MGS and Tekken. Love the former, nto a fan of the latter. Then I counter. Splinter Cell and Virtua Fighter. The former, I know will be on the 360, the latter, if reports are true, are X360 exclusive. It took a while for me to come to this, but God of War is the best game on the system. If they can replicate this level of greatness, I'm there with a pre-order the moment the SKU hits stores, but that is the only must-have I see on the horizon in my eyes on this system.
#3 Online plan, or lackthereof. I've stated that I'm the only male here, so......unless they drop some party games ala Mario Party for me and the family, the only boomerang controller that enters my house will be the one that comes with the system. Contrary to what J. Allard has said, this is not the HD era, this is the broandband area. More people will come to game online this generation than last generation. Whose online services are better and more organized? Microsoft's. You can say, Sony hasn't gone into full detail about their's. True, but that is a telling fact in itself. First off, anybody with a brain should know you aren't going to beat them(Chairman Bill's company) at their own game. I don't care who they bring. Unless Christ is coding for them, look for a great disparity.
#4 Extras. The dual monitor thing is cool, but is it feasible? Blu-ray? Not a movie watcher, doesn't faze me. Hard Drive? Means they aren't thinking about online. Probably due to the fact that up until now, the developers make decisions based on Japan, and not the rest of the world. That, in itself is mind-boggling to me since most of their profits come from Europe and the Americas. Microsoft understands that and have adjusted their gameplan accordingly.
