Go into any era thread and mention to them you post on GAF regularly and they will rip you apart, and will try to look for ways to ban you. The difference is we know you post there here and sure we five you shit about you and harass you but mostly it's for shits and giggles. That's the difference between the two sites.

This is the post that pushed me to GAF predominantly. All i had responded was to someone that posted what forums to do visit and I said ERA, Reddit and GAF and I got dog piled.

I think i remember posting in that thread too. While some question it i wasn't dogpiled over it. I seen plenty of posters post on both sites and they are just fine as long as you are not stirring up drama. Someone this week even tried pulling a gotcha on me calling me out telling me to stop posting here and he got rightfully banned over it.

*shrug* I don't know, but i just don't buy that posting here leads to a ban in Era.

Neogaf is better except for the only thing matter

The gaming disscusion itself

Barely anyone interested to talk there

The only gaming news that can gain traffic is the usual PS5 vs Xbox X thread or any related PS5 vs Xbox X clone thread

The "all white people are racist" thread embodies the issue with Era. There's plenty of cool, rational, people on that forum, but they're either too afraid of getting banned to oppose the wacky rhetoric imposed there, or they've already been banned for doing so.

I chill out in the PC and NHL Era Discords. It's a great group of people, many of which who were disbarred from Era. Plenty of rational critique of the site as well. Plus, we got a Ban Puncher Ban Puncher .

Yeah, that “Are all white people racist?” thread was one of those times I really began to question why I was visiting the site. So toxic.

There’s also a crazy amount of suicide threads there.. the entire place is pretty damn depressing.
There is an obsession over discussing racism over there. It’s an important topic for sure but I end up rolling my eyes when I see topics like the “all white people racist” thread. I won’t even go into any of those topics less I be banned like I was for a month for “dismissing racism” when I in fact stated that racism certainly played a part in what was being discussed. Their recent thread praising Vladimir Lenin seems to be the final reason I won’t be visiting anymore. At least the mods had the sense to close it after a couple pages.

If you're a 'cool and rational person' I have to ask why you would willingly associate with the psychos on that forum. Not you specifically.

Most just want to talk about video games, and other niche interests online. Era has an active userbase. More active than GAF's, unfortunately.

With forums like these being a dying breed, it's nice to have access to a large group of fellow nerds to discuss these things with.

You'd be surprised what you'd put up with when there's a lack of alternatives.

Yep. I gave up and had my account deleted there months ago as I couldn't take it anymore. I do miss the gaming side as the OTs and community threads were 95% free of most of time (at least for the games I cared about) and that's pretty slow here. Game-specific sub-Reddits are a nice substitute, though some can be too full of kids, memes etc.

But it is what it is. I'm getting old and don't need to waste so much time sharing my thoughts about games with strangers online anyway. :D Better to just lurk for news and chime in here and there.

The gap is closing over time, at least.

Definitely. I think the mod team starting to crack down on the fanboy, console warring non-sense a while back is helping. And hopefully all these tflop wars and other stuff I couldn't care less about will drop off once the next gen consoles are out a few months and the warring will just be in sales data threads.

I like Barrett!

See, no one cares if I like Barrett. That's why this is a superior forum speaking as a lurker of both.

RE is better for game news and activity but that's the only pro. Their endless bitching and whining is tiresome. Vile fucking place.

As much as I enjoy social media I think asking a random person (including journalists) what they think without doing any reading is a part of what drives the hyper partisan tribalism on forums about issues like that. Like no shit what the average person thinks is ignorant. The “wisdom of crowds” doesn’t really work out too well when no one does any reading at all. It‘s all half baked lowest common denominator interpretation of ideas from a 100 level course filtered through partisan posturing.

It’s important to get across that we are all fucking idiots because the hyper partisan move and the media that supports it relies on the illusion that we in-the-know are the smart ones and those other people are misguided. Maybe discussing topics like that in an arena not designed to facilitate knowledge is a bad idea. We will anyway but should always keep in mind that it’s a clusterfuck. In the long run some knowledge works its way into common understanding yet any idiot could learn it in an hour or two from reading an expert source without wading through the weaponized low value interpretations of those topics that carry on for years because people confuse social repetition with knowledge.

Exactly. It's like George Carlin said--think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half the population are stupider than that. Social media, forums, etc. compound that as everyone (and I have been and can still be guilty of it myself) thinks they have to have a strong, bold opinion on everything. No one stays in their lanes about things they are actual informed about. So many people are seeking attention, upvotes, likes and circle jerk communities where they want to feel like they belong. And sadly, it's often dumb to stay in your lane if your expertise in a very specific area as it's just info that can be used to help doxx you when something you say causes some loser to get butthurt.

I've largely taken to just staying away from serious conversations online, especially super politically charged things, and stick to game threads and random topics. Even many of those get stupidly heated for no reason due to fanboys and people in general just having to view people with different opinions, preferences, lifestyles etc. as the enemy, their oppressor etc. Best we can do is be smart about what we choose to engage with.

The entire point of ResetEra is for the mods to literally enforce their own opinions in every thread or political discussion and then just ban each person that disagrees with them making them feel superior and in the right. LITERALLY. This is literally what happens everyday.

Even though I lean more left than right politically, and I think Trump and those who believe in him are fucking fools; GAF is somehow better in almost every single way.

There's no point posting on Era, because your options are limited to parroting the post above yours, or getting banned. They're also a hypocritical bunch, picking and choosing when to enforce rules. The whole way the site was started never sat right with me either.

GAF has uniform rules, good leadership, and threads filled with multiple viewpoints. The political section is a good idea, and moderation seems transparent.

Eras only strength is jow active it is. I'll occasionally check to see if there's any news that hasn't made its way here, but that rarely entails going past the first post in a thread.

Yep. 100%. It just isn’t worth it and I honestly rarely have a viewpoint that I care to share in threads like that anyways. I just don’t care.

Yeh, this is where I’m at these days too. It’s just not worth it to get in an argument with someone online over that kind of stuff. Nothing productive ever really comes from it. No one changes their mind. People just get more intrenched and no one concedes anything to each other. I’ll sometimes drop in a thread to ask someone ”why do you think this” about something I disagree on and I’ve had a couple constructive conversations where I’ve learned some stuff and expanded my perspective. So I think focusing on what you can learn from others is the best approach with that. But just calling someone I’ll never meet an idiot and trying to force them to think exactly what I think is a pretty meaningless exercise.

I’ve been trying to spend less time on the politics board recently because of this. People are absolutely free to talk about whatever they like but for me it feels like the level of conversation there has gone downhill recently. More and more it feels like people are just trying to antagonise each other and it gets weirdly aggressive.

I’ll probably break and end up posting about serious stuff at points. But for now I’ll just try and stick to chatting shit about fun stuff.

Just like Era most of neogaf is just fine actually. The problems however are centered mainly around the politics section here and the Etc section there. The bias and the favoritism that is shown around certain posters here is no different in my eyes than the same thing that happens over at Era. Certain members are allowed to bend and stretch rules to the breaking point and even beyond with little to no punishment despite the rules that are posted. Insults, dogpiling, racism, bigotry, harassment, and people taking an argument from one thread and continuing it in another thread despite a change in topic. I can't even count how many times I have been called a cunt, retard, disingenuous piece of shit etc etc these past few months . And as far as I know not a single person has been even warned for it. All of these things as I understand it are against the rules of Gaf and on Era as well and yet it happens all the time in both places. And neither place really does much about it. If it gets REALLY out of hand you might have a mod come in and tell people to get back on topic or stop insulting people or maybe even you will pop in and tell certain people to stop derailing threads or whatnot, but that's about it. The rules for better or worse are adjustable it seems rather than concrete. It just depends on who is doing the breaking. Once again I reiterate that this is mainly in the politics section here. I have not really seen this type of behavior or favoritism extended to the gaming section, community section, or off topic. Though to be fair I don't frequent those as much here as I do on Era.

I raised my concerns about this issue about the rules being applied evenly quite awhile ago. So this really isn't anything new from me though.

Don’t be a disingenuous piece of shit cunt retard and you won’t be called one

Restera
- Tons of people and content
- Heavily policed. Make sure to conform to moderator rules and views
- Basically China

GAF
- A lot less action
- You can speak you're mind, as long s you don't troll or go overboard with insults
- Smaller democratic country

Resetera is China. High population of mindless drones controlled by thought police and the threat of unpersoning.

GAF is Australia. Low population freethinking trashfire of shitposts and banter.

Posting from my phone at the moment so I'm having trouble tracking down all the examples I had in mind, but here are a few.

I know damn well if I went into a thread calling other members "punk ass bitches" "cunts", or "pieces of shit" that I would at the very least catch a warning for it. But that's the kind of bias I'm talking about.

Because it's me and people don't like me it's considered okay apparently to break the rules. But just so long as it's directed at me. And that is fair no matter how you look at it. The rules should be enforced evenly regardless of who is doing the talking. And that's is where Gaf and Era trip themselves up in my opinion. That's what I mean by both having a plethora of issues.
But when they called you that they weren’t lying. You know yourself deep down that you’re pathetic no matter what the image you try so hard to show. You think if you were straightforward you’ll find all those people treating you the same just for the fuck of it? Try again. Lets test what you claim right now shall we? You’re a cunt. Now say it back lets see who gets banned yeah?

Excuse me? Don’t call me that. I try so hard to act like a good guy but since I’m an idiot I forget about that and expose myself. Then I whine like a fucking bitch when EVERYONE treats me like shit. Fucking lizard
