Which one to play first, Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker?

This is for a friend, who I'm lending my Gamecube to. I let him borrow the bonus disc that came with Wind Waker as well, and he asked whether he should play OOT first or just go for Wind Waker. I really couldn't answer, because I've never played OOT myself. He doesn't have much time, but then he worries that playing WW first will make OOT look worse than it is in his eyes.

I'd play OoT first.

Not that it really matters -- the story in WW doesn't involve anything from OoT.

Considering Ocarina of Time is about events that lead into Wind Waker, have him start with OoT. Graphics aren't a factor.

Not specifically, but the little clues from what the world of OoT used to be in WW is very nice.

I personally thought WW was the better title, so you should play TOoT first. I found playing WW then trying to go back to TOoT was too hard. It seemed too unpolished.

get him to play OOT first just so he can see how far the graphics have come. TWW is a beautiful game to look at, but would be even more appreciated after playing OOT.

start with OoT. There is definitley a connection between them as Tri said. (he is the zelda master afterall)

Mine was when
you walk into the room in the castle with the stained glass portraits of the sages or whatever.

I have a different question. If I liked OoT but didn't like MM that much, will I like WW?
It depends upon your reasons for not liking MM.

MM is in a way a 'black sheep' of the Zelda series, similar to how Adventure of Link is also. It didn't really take an entirely new approach to the gameplay, but the overall atmosphere and story isn't anything like you'd find in previous Zeldas. It's also probably the darkest of the series.

Wind Waker is far from that. It continues the classic 'Zelda + Ganon + Triforce' story that began in Ocarina of Time, and it does so in a light-hearted manner.

Of course, the events in MM are covered in Wind Waker, and they eventually provide explanation for certain situations. (Such as the Triforce of Courage quest). So if you want to pretty much cover the entire current Zelda story, you'd need to play all three. Ocarina of Time, to Majora's Mask, to Wind Waker.

And let's not forget the awesomeness of the opening cinema thing either.

I gotta finish my Wind Waker second quest sometime. With Zelda games I always seem to play 1.5 times through.

Well, I'm not a Zelda fan, and I know everyone here will disagree with my opinion, but when I played OoT and MM (which are the only two Zelda games I've played to completion), I felt that on several occasions it wasn't clear what the puzzle or task is supposed to be, which led to frustration and/or boredom.

This wasn't so bad in OoT (although one incident nearly ruined the experience for me), but in MM I occasionally felt like I didn't know what I'm supposed to do (as opposed to not knowing how to do it).

If time is an issue, just play Wind Waker. It's the same type of gameplay, but with more up-to-date presentation and an easier/shorter - meaning more enjoyable for someone with time constraints - experience.

If you play WW first, the controls and especially graphics will probably feel underwhelming in Ocarina of time afterwards. :P

Yeah, that's probably because in Majora's Mask they ditched the 'hint' system that was in Ocarina of Time. And since Majora's Mask was meant to be the sequel to OoT, they were probably going for a higher level of difficulty. (Similar to MP1 --> MP2) There's also the fact that MM had a different director than OoT, so that's also why there were various gameplay differences between the two.

What was this incident in OoT that you speak of?

Haha, OK. In the fire dungeon, there was this room with a steel mesh floor, and lava would come spewing ever 10 second or so. I needed t to jump from one ledge to another to reach the door, but when I tried it, Link fell, and it was clear that it was too high from him to reach.

So I spent the next 3 days searching every nook and cranny in the dungeon trying to find an item or way to get past that room. When I didn't find anything (I must've searched every room 3 or 4 times), I started searching throughout the overworld. I finally went to the water dungeon, but since I was missing essential items that I would've gotten from completing the fire temple (I didn't know this at the time), I got stuck there, too. I got so frustrated and felt so lost that I finally gave up on the game. I didn't have internet access at the time, and my brother and friend were way behind me.

So, a couple of days later my brother tells me that he finished the fire temple. When I ask him how he got past that room, he tells me he simply jumped from that ledge to the other. I go and try it myself, and sure enough it works. I try it again, and play close attention, and it does look like Link's hand isn't able to reach the ledge, but at the last second it magically does. I was so mad. Mad at myself for not having retried jumping, despite it looking impossible, and mad that such a glitch exists.

:lol :lol

I know exactly the spot you're talking about. IIRC, the first time I went through the Fire Temple I didn't even attempt to jump to that ledge because it indeed did look too high. I think I spent quite a number of hours trying to find some sort of block that would fall from the ceiling so I could actually reach the ledge. Out of frustration I just tried jumping to the ledge and yeah, magically Link could reach it.

It was a really odd point in the game.

I'm playing The Ocarina Of Time right now, and I had forgotten how brilliant this game can be.

A little off topic, but there was a website kicking around that had the stories to all the Legend Of Zelda games ever made. Does any one have the URL?

You can pretty much find manual summaries at any random Zelda fan site.

Or I could just tell you. :lol

Google is my friend.

On another sidenote, OoT really brings me back and helps me remember why I love the series. I have a feeling that over my Christmas break, it's going to be all Zelda, all the time.

IAWTP. OoT can be really tough to get into if you play something as clean and smooth as TWW. Plus, there's more to appreciate in Celda once you've played the N64 Zelda titles.

No! You have to start from Zelda 1 on the NES! Otherwise you won't respect the Zelda Timeline!!!!

/sarcasm off

Even if that was an attempt to be funny, the Zelda timeline doesn't begin with Zelda 1. ;)

I know there is a story path, but much like the Mario games its pretty basic. I honestly would reccomend you start with...

SNES / GBA - Link to the Past

N64 - OoT + Majora's Mask (One of my least favorite Zelda's but not bad).

GCUBE - WW

I would say the NES ones, but if you new to the series those might be major turn offs for the modern gamer. But DONT sell your GCUBE, the new Zelda looks mighty impressive every time I see it. I just hope there is less sneaking around and stuff added in the WW and more run into dungeon and kill everything with your sword.

Yes! That part had me so frustrated when I was originally playing it. "There's no way Link could jump there, so why even try??" I kept looking for someway to shoot arrows and drop down there... :lol :lol
