lol at both the derail and saying nirvana didn't have a major effect on the music landscape. just lol.
Of what exactly?O the irony.

But that's the thing, they didn't change anything. Bands like Sonic Youth and R.E.M. and Dinosaur Jr. were all doing the same thing they were doing, except better, it's just that Nirvana got to the major labels first. Seriously, this is like saying Green Day's Dookie changed everything, even though punk and more specifically pop-punk had been around and doing well for years.
Sorry for derailing a RIP Whitney Houston thread, but when being called dumb by some Nirvana apologist who himself doesn't quite know his music history...
Ummmm, I'm sorry but Jennifer Hudson? You guys are HAPPY that Jennifer Hudson is going to be anywhere NEAR that tribute??? This is a travesty.
I know some of Pop-GAF is going to point out that my personal fave is Christina Aguilera, and she's very guilty of yelling and over-singing. But hell, at least Christina has a very masterful lower and mid register (truly the best in the game right now) to compensate for her occasional screaming.
Jennifer Hudson doesn't even have that! J-Hud is the Queen of scream, she has no control, her lower register is garbage, and she will ruin a Whitney Houston tribute. ;_;
surprised he lasted as long as he did carrying on like that.aeiko

Heh.

Jesus Christ. This is some batch of juniors.Bands like Sonic Youth and R.E.M. and Dinosaur Jr. were all doing the same thing they were doing, except better, it's just that Nirvana got to the major labels first.

hah I missed that... All that music history cred flushed down the toilet.Wow. Have you heard those bands? REM and DJr were nothing like Nirvana, and Sonic Youth were on a whole different level of genius, which limited their mainstream influence.
Oh wow. This is quite shocking.A quick glance over at CNN shows that her bodyguard found her and nothing beyond that.
This type of angina is caused by the coronary artery spasming and smashing itself shit. Imagine kinking a garden hose.

They were all alternative bands that were getting attention several years prior to Nirvana breaking through. Hell, one could add Jane's Addiction to that.Wow. Have you heard those bands? Nirvana and Nevermind didn't change anything, they were just another fad that the recording industry latched onto and milked for all they were worth to help sign other grunge bands. The same thing happened when bands like Van Halen and Motley Crue kickstarted the hair metal scene(the scene that grunge ushered out) a decade before, the same thing that happened when Green Day hit it big(bands like Bad Religion, Pennywise, and NOFX were all pressured by big labels to sign), the same thing happened when Korn and Limp Bizkit briefly made nu-metal cool, and the same thing happened when The White Stripes ushered in garage rock revival and we got several bands with "The" names(The Vines, The Strokes...).
That's all the recording industry is, and that's all Nirvana really was.

this is...a joke post?
?
Beyonce, Adele, Florence, and Mariah all have stronger mid-belts (F4 - B4 range) than Christina does these days, and Lady Gaga might be stronger as well.
Isn't that called a heart attack?
and IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

next you'll be telling me you haven't heard of The Pixies. They were all alternative bands that were getting attention several years prior to Nirvana breaking through. Hell, one could add Jane's Addiction to that.

How the fuck did a debate about Nirvana wind up in this thread?
Jesus Christ. This is some batch of juniors.
And I love how you can't even back yourself up.It just gets better and better.

dude how old is that? she's fat in that video and hasn't been for a couple years now.
-_-

And yes I've heard of The Pixies, they are another one of those bands that were doing everything Nirvana was doing but better that I was talking about.

This tragedy illustrates show biz's destructive influence on the weak. Her parents tried their damnest to protect her from he dark side of stardom, but apparently that wasn't enough. Let's not blame Bobby -- Whitney did this to Whitney.
I was making the point that the video is not recent. AND she's killed plenty of performances in her career. Posting one video of a woman for whom we can post 20 videos of destroying songs is silly. If there is one current singer who I expect could do a good job that's under 50, I'd be Jennifer Hudson. I'm glad she agreed. He was referring to what she was doing *vocally* and not what she looked like.Nevermind that Christina does the identical thing and just happens to have a better tone doing it!
Has she stopped belting with a high larynx, then? I haven't listened to her in a few years.
RIP

i thought we were blaming showbiz? huh.RIP

sometimes singers have a down day. Jennifer has been fucking sensational much more often than mediocre.
someone decided they'd object to someone innocuously commenting that Whitney was the 90s with "not so fast: nirvana.jpg".

Edit: Fuck you eznark!!
This is no time for fuck you's, this is a time for celebration friend. We might find out how the skiing trip ended!
But I'm talking about J-Hud right now, and she definitely doesn't have the type of control over her mid-belts that Christina does.
And not to derail, but I'll give you Beyonce, Florence and Mariah...not so sure about Lady Gaga and Adele
And your point is? Nevermind the fact that you are wrong(they signed to Warner in 1988, and already had popular mainstream songs like "The One I Love"; also their most popular song "Losing my Religion" was released several months before Nevermind), that doesn't somehow make them a lesser band than Nirvana, just because they weren't quite as big.Yeah. REM wasn't on a major label or anything in 1991.

The best live version. The studio doesn't hold a candle for me.
