I know someone will say it.

But NIN version of Hurt is better.

Just about every cover on Nirvanas Unplugged album is awesome. I would say they are at least comparable to the originals.

But if you listen to Cobain who nails it, the music side of it is inferior.

Honestly, I'm with you. Cash's cover, while also great. I prefer the original.

Right?

The Cash version is fantastic. And with the music video with his wife, and he is at a decaying museum of his legacy, and close to death.

And it is all decrepit and awful.. It is an amazing moment.

No hate for either version. But Crown of Shit is better then crown of thorns. And Cash elevated the song in a different way.

It was not a tiny 30 something bitching about life. It was a well torn bad ass, watching his kingdom crumbling.

But still the NIN version is better. Cash had an amazing career, but he did not write Hurt.

That is an example of a great cover that completely transforms the meaning of the song without changing the lyrics.
One is a nice little song about how it is good to have friends, the cover is a song about needing friends to just survive.

Because I noticed we have several Garbage fans in another thread :messenger_sunglasses:

I like her voice better for this song.

Iron Maiden vs Cradle of Filth

Hallowed Be Thy Name

I like Maiden a lot more than CoF in general, as anyone with an ear does.
I just really lke CoF's take on this song. It's not that different, I just find the tempo and vocal style more suited to theme of the song.

Came here to post this. I like the COF version much more, tbh... I can remember when I was drinking with two friends, one of them I just knew that night and we went to my house to take a break from the streets... I just started showing her that version and ended up staying till morning listening to more COF because she loved them.

Good old times :')

Wicked Game.

Chris Isaak:

HIM

I prefer the HIM cover.

Not a bad cover -never heard it before, but I really love the original, so I'd stick with that one.

I'll go back to the 80's since I'm an 80's child:

I'll take the Laura Branigan remake, and although her cover doesn't mix things up too much, I still prefer it. Plus, Vice City. :p

80's win again. Definitive proof that the 80's cannot be topped.

Come on, now. Machine Head did the ultimate 'Hallowed be thy Name' cover. :messenger_horns:

Wicked Game.

Chris Isaak:

The story behind that song is great, and it makes it even more crushingly romantic. Chris Isaak found himself falling in love with a woman. Upon telling her that he wanted to date, she told him that she found him attractive, but also said that she was just interested in a physical relationship. He turned her down, and that song was the result.

I do like Garbage, and that is a pretty good cover, but I still think I like The Sundays version the most.

If you enjoy the song, I'd definitely recommend their music, especially their first and third albums.

I like Eric Clapton's cover of Knocking on Heaven's Door more than the original.

The copy is never better than the original.
Original artist had to both compose and record a song, while artist who makes a remade version only has to record it. And, since it's usually a popular song, it feeds of the popularity that original artist gained.

Therefore, remade songs are nothing to brag about.

Lots of covers are better than the originals. You have a bunch of people in this very thread stating that they think cover versions are better.

The notion that something can't be improved upon is absurd.

Fugees

What do you think the original or fugees one?

That's tough one. I like the arrangement of the Flack version and the production and singing of Fugees.
Going to go with Flack. The singing wasn't as strong but not so bad as to ruin it.

Yeah I absolutely agree. I always thought the fugees one is the original, or rather I never knew they covered the song and I thought it was absolutely great. Then I was looking for it on Spotify and only found the flack version and that’s when I learned that the fugees only covered the song and so I was/am listening only to the flack version and now I like it more than the fugees one.

This is going to be a pretty deep cut, but something I was surprised by.

Young MJ's version of Stevie Wonder's "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day" is better.

I remember hearing on the radio how one day Roberta Flack heard the cover done by the Fugees when she was in a store, it was the first time she had heard it and she thought it was actually her singing with type of remix. If the original singer can't even tell it is not her singing...well that's a pretty good cover.

Here's two more:

Everybody wants to rule the world

Portia Doubleday owns it. It annoys me how happy and upbeat the original comes across given the lyrics used.
