Finally beat it today. I'm not sure if I'll go back and attempt the UFO, City of Gold, and Hell levels. That would mean many more months of possibly fruitless playtime. Spelunky is a close second to my favorite rogue-like, The Binding of Isaac.
Doing the Vita daily, doing pretty well for a typical run, buy a helper who not long after whips me, not hitting any enemies but knocks me into spikes :/
I found your problem. lol
Helpers routinely try to murder me with bombs or other weapons so the only time I buy them is when I want sacrifice fodder.
I
In any case, is there any way to kill the shop keeper?
I tried to get into this game, but the fact that it starts you over at the beginning of the game after you die really pisses me off. I don't mind starting over at the beginning of a stage or something. But like I got to the jungle after 2-3 hours of straight play, was really pumped, died and restarted only to find out I'm at the beginning? Fuck that shit.
In any case, is there any way to kill the shop keeper?
haha, if you make it to the jungle a few times and help a dude out by giving him stuff, you get a shortcut tunnel to that area. Takes a few tries though, won't take as long in the future.
You can kill the shopkeeper...but I wouldn't till I was more confident with the game, there is a network of shopkeepers that hunts for you if you annoy one of their own!
How far into the jungle is he? I did see a dude at the exit TO the jungle, is that the dude you're talking about? Because one time I tried to pick him up but he killed me.
That's the guy! He's at the entrance to the start of new areas. I think if you meet him 3 times for each area and give him what he needs, you'll get the tunnel and can start from there straight away.
I'm not sure who you tried to pick up but I think that might be just big dopey looking dude in some of the caves who takes a few hits to go down permanently.
Thanks for the confirmation, I've avoided wasting any more on them although the first few times I tried them they were pretty great. Not worth the risk.
Getting better...consistently end of jungle. Feels good.
-Ran into this before, wanted to go to the shop but pretty sure I'd get in trouble:
^ best to avoid right? no chance of the shopkeeper blaming someone else or letting it go or not upsetting him in that position right?
Yea the guy I picked up wasn't in the transitional area but right before. Looked like a gorilla or something. But I know who you're talking about now. I guess if there's a way to unlock shortcuts to new areas then the game isn't quite as bad as I thought. Because having to replay the entire game every time with no shortcuts would definitely make me not want to return.
Yeah, that was a caveman. Enemies that can be knocked out will start twitching about a second and a half before they wake up, and they'll hurt you if you're still carrying them when they wake up.
You might be able to drop down while whipping to the right. Wouldn't recommend that if you aren't used to whipping arrows though. Or you could drop a damsel or caveman in front of it to take the hit.
That game looks so weird...but I'm going to put myself through it to see how the gameplay holds when it comes out on vita next year I think.
Congrats btw, also how do you mean that you beat it if you haven't done the other levels? Did you do some sort of shortcut that I heard about?
For the daily challenge is the level layout exactly the same for everyone?

I'm overjoyed. After many grueling and soulcrushing hours, I finally did it:

Hardest achievement for me to unlock, and I think it took me approximately 10 - 12+ hours on-and-off since its launch on PC to pull it off. I haven't felt this much euphoria after beating a game in a long, long time... despite all the hardships and tense moments it threw at me. Recorded it for posterity (click the image) if anyone feels like watching it, but I don't want to go through this anymore for a good while.
That wet fur level was one hell of a close shave.

Shameless self-plug to help answer your question. To like this game but the more I try the less I seem to get into it. I have only done the first three stages at which point does this game get addicting?
There are shortcuts, but there's something to keep in mind about those. Using them is effectively handicapping yourself, as whatever you collected naturally doesn't carry over from your previous run which in turn, needless to stay, only serves to make the latter worlds even more difficult than they already are. You're better off jumping into one of those shortcuts to get accustomed to the dangers of the next worlds, only to ace them (or attempt to!) with ample preperations on a bonafide playthrough.Yea the guy I picked up wasn't in the transitional area but right before. I've died over a 1000 times and you know what I (clumsily) discovered only two days ago?You can whip arrows?!
FFS. 600 times I've played this.

You can throw boomerangs DIAGONALLY. Outrageous.
Just started this, it's pretty tough. I hate that ghost though, am i too slow if it shows up?
You have three minutes to "finish" a stage prior to its arrival, but there's usually enough legroom to kite it around and avoid it. The ghost isn't all downsides to the player however, without spoiling anything.Just started this, it's pretty tough. I hate that ghost though, am i too slow if it shows up?
That's painful. I hope it wasn't during the daily challenge too.Waves. Spelunky is perfect, and for my money the best platformer ever made without Mario in its name.
Had a heartbreaking run last night. Had about 70 bombs, a jetpack, the Scepter and several hundred thousand gold heading into the City of Gold. Near the entryway, the Ghost appeared, I tried to shoot it with the Scepter and the orb flew through me and off the map, targeting who knows what. I have played hundreds of hours of Spelunky. I know better. But this is Spelunky.

The correct choice there is to MURDER THAT BASTARD AND TAKE THE BOMBS. As is the case any time you run into a shop. If you don't want to do that, you can either drop a body in front of the arrow trap as mentioned or you can destroy it. You can use a bomb on the next square there to blow up the arrow trap without anything on the shop property exploding but that would be risky. A mattock would be safer. But yeah, probably best to avoid it entirely if you aren't comfortable with getting comfortable murdering those profiteering psychopaths.
edit:
I don't know what it is about whipping arrows, I just cannot get the timing down unless I jump down looking away and hit them with my backswing. But that probably looks a lot more badass anyway, so I'll stick with it.
Something I just found out last night when I was angry at losing my Ankh over something stupid and decided to do everything I could to get myself killed again: If you do both the Worm and UFO levels during the Ice Caves, you get a second 3-4 after the UFO.
My winning playthrough was a straight mines -> jungle -> ice -> pyramid playthrough. I have yet to beat the UFO level or even reach the City of Gold or Hell for that matter. BoI is much more forgiving than Spelunky since there are no 1-hit kills whereas spikes & falls are a constant threat in the latter.
I'd say go for it. The UFO and Hell are the hardest stages in the game, and they're well worth experiencing.

In stark contrast next to Spelunky, Isaac's overall progress is gated to a degree by how many items (or which) you managed to grind out of it. While it's still very much a skill-based game, a lot of it is also dependant on luck initially as well as time investment even if the game is designed around the notion of random drops. It's slightly comparable to what Rogue Legacy does in other words, but admittedly Isaac isn't as obnoxious with this practice and there's loads of content to unlock. Which... the developers are expanding even further with Rebirth.
tl;dr --- You only get to the real meat of the game after having spent a dozen or two hours with The Binding of Isaac. Whether you like that or not is up to you.

Not even lying when I say I rarely bump into that level in normal runs, yet the RNG laughed at me when I was aiming for the achievement.
Ah so I might actually have a chance of winning the game sometime in the next year or so!
Gotten used to the jungle with the help of the shortcut, finally unlocked the ice tavern shortcut too (also using the jungle shortcut), pretty tough but not too long to go maybe, thanks!
Having a bit of fun killing the shopkeeper too (using that whip tip -> grabbing his shotgun), usually end up paying for it later but I'm feeling a bit more confident and the instant free items is pretty awesome.
Also ran into the golden monkey who poops. Brilliant.
I've played 700 times and didn't know you could hop on the surface of water with good timing. You can whip arrows?!

If your goal is to beat the game, you really should start from the beginning each run. Using shortcuts (in addition to not being a legit, full run) just gimps you since you don't get the free items/gold from the easier early levels, and you see fewer shops/crates/altars etc. as well. Regarding that shop in the screenshot you posted, you can probably just drop down into that arrow trap while holding either a damsel or a critter (like the mice in the mines), which will tank the hit for you.
Nothing wrong with using the shortcuts to practice. By the time you come back with bomb paste, a cape, etc. it'll seem so much easier.
