Who's your trusted reviewer for games?

I've always trusted only my own taste. My childhood was a bad influence, there was no internet, and reviews weren't available. All I could rely on was my instincts, and maybe a few photos in a magazine. Mistakes happen, of course, but not often, my gut feeling usually doesn't let me down. I've even forgotten the last time I read a review or watched the video review.

Steam reviews and then watch a video of gameplay.

As much as I like people like Civvie and watch his videos, he likes some shit that I don't. That's totally cool.

Hence why I find something I like, check the aggregate user reviews, and see how it plays before pulling trigger.

I find people who call themselves "professional gaming reviewers" to be a sad joke in the year of our lord 2025.

there are none, at least not really. even the people I generally trust have moments where I disagree strongly with their assesment.

I generally do not trust any review that is a day 1/day 0/pre-release review, as those are often on a time limit for when they need to be published and therefore the reviewers can rarely fully assess the game.

I do not trust fighting game reviews or character action game reviews aside from extremely rare exceptions from 1 or 2 youtubers thst specialize in those.
because I know not a single "mainstream" reviewer has any idea what they're talking about in these genres.

I am relatively old school, i purely source my game reviews from the Delphic Oracle

Here we have a small historical discrepancy. This institute employed the oracle Pythia, who would enter a trance (often narcotic-induced) and receive messages from the god Apollo. For the average person, these messages often made no sense, as they were simply a random jumble of words. Therefore, there were specialized people there who were tasked with deciphering and interpreting these messages. In other words, you essentially chose the ancient equivalent of the IGN as your source of information. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I don't trust any of them anymore from the big publications, too much evidence to sugggest tampering and scripts. I miss the days of EGM and the wild west of reviews. I see more value in general word of mouth.

If I had to pick one, it would be DF Retro and John's reviews of modern retro style games. I appreciate his passion and respect for older style games. His best work is usually when not comparing pixels or framerates.

Honourable mentions to My life in gaming and Gamesack, when talking about similar material. They have the same passion too.

Out of the early reviews, he was the only one to be honest, even if he did skillfully avoided mentioning the word "woke".

-@Karak

-Skill Up

-Gameranx (Especially Jake Baldino).
I do watch ACG, Skill Up, Fextralife, Noisy Pixel, couple Switch channels and a few others.

I used to like Angry Joe when his bit was actually funny but that hasn't been the case for years.

Edit: Aggregated Steam reviews are usually pretty on point for me (if over say a hundred reviews at least).

And yeah, for retro reviews, My Life in Gaming, DF Retro and Gamesack are great and quite fun to watch. Also SegaLordX.

For HappyConsoleGamer, his channel is entertaining but he is always way too excited and positive about pretty much any JRPG, lol.

Myself. Why the fuck would I "trust" or rely on someone else's opinion? Only thing I look for is perhaps performance, but other than that, I buy whatever i feel like. Only idiots buy based on someone's opinion.
