Hey hey, Sseth here. Do you like video games? Do you like when video games are viewed? What about reviewed?

Today we're discussing your go to trustworthy reviewer in any format. I typically trust the reviews of Civvie 11 for shooters and Sseth for random crap.

I was listening to DF about Metroid Prime 4 a week or so ago, and I hated how he was speaking like he was writing erotica as a game review instead of just talking about the mechanics of the game. I can visually see what it looks like. I don't need word porn to describe the graphics.

Post a link for discovery of YouTube channels, articles, or whoever on whatever website you don't think is crappy. If you like some guy/gal on IGN, post that. Don't be shy. We won't bite.

Steam Reviews for me. I do look at Opencritic too just to get an idea of overall critical reception, but generally you can't trust reviewers or "journalists" anymore.

I just discovered Civvie recently and have plowed through most of his content. Yahtzee is about the only reviewer I watch these days for modern games.

Don't really have any. Mainly use aggregated Steam reviews, skim a few for details, and then watch footage of the game being played moment to moment on youtube.

Best format an individual came up with to sell me on a game though still was Totalbiscuit's "WTF IS" is segments. More of an impressions video that is 20-40 minutes, going over the structure of the game, showing raw footage of it being played, and covering technical/performance aspects that paid journos stopping doing in the late 2000s. I haven't seen anyone else riff on that format that I'm aware of.

Post social media, it's mostly untrustworthy people.

For a "normie"/popular site, Gametrailers used to do very balanced reviews back in the day...

Lately I've been watching Noisy Pixel ones since they're chill, balanced and the dudes seem to still love games/gaming so...

I don't have one really. I just check random reviews to get an idea and see if I hear anything I specifically hate games doing.

I'll watch gameplay footage without commentary for games I think I'm interested in.

If there's a game that people keep on mentioning, then it's probably addictive if not very good.

For older games there's plenty of channels that do retrospective overviews, but I don't trust reviews of anything newer than 10+ years.

He's also good but...I get bored out of G'damned mind by his format.Dont know if it's his way of speaking, sections and/or the gameplay shown, plus, he harps on for way too long IMO...

At least he's honest and the reviews are also balanced, unlike the 99% of YT grifters out there

Pretty sure he's been caught lying about his completion rate. I know another poster here posted about it in the past. Something to do with his Steam Account saying he earned achievements that weren't available at the time he played the game, or something like that.

I'm easily sold on games. All it really takes is one long post on GAF absolutely glazing a game and i'll probably buy it. Even in genres I hate like fighting games, I will still give it a chance if someone produces a tome on why it's worth my time.

I usually take a chance on anything that remotely looks good to my tastes. Sometimes I get pleasantly surprised like Hi Fi Rush , shinobi , and even ninja gaiden 4 was a lot of fun.

Sometimes it doesn't pan out like avowed, death stranding, and FF 16, but I usually still can get enough out of a game to make it to the end.

I think avowed was the only " newish " game that I stopped playing all together and fairly quick.

This isn't very helpful for anyone who likes new games, since it's not a heavily trafficked site any more.
But it's a gold mine of honest and accurate reviews for most games of the 8th gen and earlier, which is most of what I play.

I'll occasionally look at SkillUp's reviews just out of curiosity. But it's never me seeking his opinion and allowing it to affect my own.

Much like I did ever since the GameTrailer days, I just look for raw gameplay footage and chalk up my own opinion. Gotten a lot easier with YouTube since then of course, lol. Or just looking at someone streaming it.

Havent listened to reviews for a while. I do agree that DF especially John talks like he is about to go on his knees and blow Nintendo and Sony devs. like dude its just a game, calm down.

I did like Greg kasavin's reviews. he was cool but i was like 15 back then. Doubt i would still listen to his reviews.

I can't think of anyone I trust overall. I will trust specific reviewers about specific aspects of a game, when I know our tastes align. For instance, I trust Skill Up's opinions about story, because I've seen over time that he and I have similar tastes in that area. Otoh, I've also seen that we have very different taste when it comes to combat, so I won't pay much attention to his opinions on that aspect.
