Why am I facing 75 years in prison? (Trump inauguration protesters)

That violence and destruction... good lord. That is at least a decade in jail. There were literal broken windows.

Good job, police!

That article completely fails to mention the violent rampage that occurred that destroyed stores, cars were set on fire, a lot of people got rocks thrown at them, and six cops were injured. Is 75 years penalty harsh for inciting and participating in riots? Maybe. Was everyone charged involved in the violence? Probably not, but thats what trials are for.

Everyone involved was NOT peaceful. There was plenty of violence and damage. You can see pictures and stuff here:

Sure, but the problem seems to be that they are threatening these ridiculous times to bully peaceful protesters also. If someone was arrested and they have proof they were destroying things, of course that should be punished.

I am so glad people are just dogpiling my first comment instead of reading the entire thread where I later say this is not ok but also not fascist. Typical black and white, no middle ground allowed thinking.

I'm out of there before the cops have time to react and arrest anyone.
It's not a protest any longer, it's a riot.

Haha. Dude seriously. The article literally says that they encircled these people. Once you're in the middle of that kind of shit, it's really hard to get out. Have you ever been at a public (standing) concert or found yourself in a mosh pit? Multiply that several times. Even if you want out, you might well be stuck.

Oh come on. The entire point of the article is that police were indiscriminately arresting people. Everybody knows there were rioters that day. The fact that people are just brushing this off is scary.

I remember watching on inauguration day wall to wall news coverage. It didn't look that crowded at the area where things were set on fire and windows smashed and the cops waited a while before moving in.

Nope, I would have been so far away from there the second the first window was smashed.

"oh wait, it's that kind of protest? Nope. I'm out."

It'd be great if while you were on your way out you were arrested and charged 75 years.

Or you know, getting even a year for smashing a window.

I don't think the author's definition of civil disobedience and the generally-accepted definition match.

I highly doubt they would, given these people were protesting the legal transfer of power to a democratically elected president.

This made me laugh. Thank you.

If the cops were firing rubber bullets, tear gas and concussion grenades how much of the damage on them? And I'm really questioning who started this. This was that incident where the police lost their shit because some of the protesters weren't following their routes wasn't it?

Let's not pretend it was all sign holding and slogan chanting on inauguration day 2017.

Thank you for being a voice of reason

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

This is EXACTLY why you have second amendment rights: to rise up against a state that no longer serves the people.

BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

This worship of property is so fucking pathetic. Who gives a fuck about some windows?

But every thread about protests has been utterly ridiculous so why should this one be any different.

You're glossing over the fact that journalists were treated like this as well.

Yes, punish the people who broke laws. But when you can't identify those people, you don't mass charge everyone.

Yeah you're right. Shoot the cops doing their jobs, then shoot the MPs, fuck It just shoot everyone. Justice can only be found at the business end of a rifle.

Do you know who you sound like right now?

Responsible business owners for one, especially if they had nothing to do with what's happening. Not talking about this one instance per se, but it's beyond ridiculous to smash windows of your town's local businesses during a riot when that business wasn't part of the problem

You don't understand shit about how those rights work then.

You realize you will be up against the wall long before anyone in the state.

Let's not pretend that randomly destroying unrelated property does anything to further, or legitimize the cause.
On topic: It's probably impossible to know exactly who were involved with what, but facing substantial jail time over this is ridiculous but it does not surprise me.

I'm not sure how things will look in the next couple of days here in Hamburg during G20, but I'm sure no one will face 10 years jail time, not even with a riot.

Quite a few people from Texas? Trump? Trump supporters? The NRA? Too many options, enlighten me, please!

It's a fairly recent law, actually, that Obama signed and supported: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_..._obama_is_a_quiet_attack_on_free_speech_.html

Pres. Obama is a con man. It's not surprising that he played his most fervent supporters yet again.

Homeowners, minority victims of fraud, his own people's civil liberties, and the list goes on. His people claim the country is going down the tubes. Yet Pres. Obama is living the life and is making bank since leaving office. His actions should be unacceptable and publicly shamed but his people put up with virtually anything their team does.

Not for real. As the article dictates, its a scare tactic and after the lawyers are done they'll probably only get a couple years, decade max.

You wouldn't make it a week in the pen let alone a couple years but apparently that sentence is light work

When Obama was president, republicans were screaming "2nd amendment!" and we were decrying them as gross. Now that the other team is in the white house its suddenly ok? Be better.

As is usual, both sides are kinda right and wrong.

No, they won't be getting 75 years, but the fact our justice system is based around plea bargains and excessive initial charges for the purpose of pleading down is horrible.

This was a riot and lots of damage was done. Were the people arrested guarantied to be apart of the violence? No, but that goes back to point one with how broken our system is with prosecutors threatening people with life sentences with the intent to plea down.

This is more on the side of an obvious broken justice system if anything else though.

Yeah, this article really kind of sucks.

Great to know that many liberals care more about a couple windows than the futures of 200 people

There's a whole other side of this story that is absent here. Or rather a lot of information left out.

yeah i'm sure the other side will explain away getting a couple of years at best for just being at the scene of a riot while they got tear grenades and concussion grenades fired at them by the police (who skirt murder all the time) for breaking windows while someone who's deadset on killing people got put in to office

The normalisation of getting 1,2, 10...75 years of prison for rioting is disturbing.

This is how fascist states rise.

When the "I don't want any trouble" folks lay low and stick their heads in the sand until someone frees them while minorities and people not falling in line get detained or killed.

Great to know that many liberals care more about a couple windows than the futures of 200 people

Corporations and Windows first!

Nobody claimed that, so ...

Oh please. It is heavily implied by many.

There is a strong violence/riot defense force here on gaf. When directly asked they say they are against violence, but when it occurs they don't condemn it and spew some BS about how all change involves violence... as if that justifies anything.

These protestors are some of the most courageous ones resisting Trump.

Resistance without teeth behind it is just noise that politicians can pander to or ignore without consequences.

Rule of law is not always just and fighting back against injustice should always be commended even if it goes against the law.

Yes well, if only they used these "teeth" against actual Trump properties or associates maybe...

But no, they broke shit belonging to innocent bystanders... Yeah...That's really furthering the movement and getting people to agree with you... Hurting people that had nothing to do with the target of your ire.

And don't say smashing the window at Starbucks doesn't hurt minimum wage guy/gal who isn't going to be working for a few days while Starbucks corporate gets on the phone with insurance to fix their store...

I'm glad there are people like you defending the right of the state to sentence people to 75 years in prison over being at the scene of a riot they may or may not have participated in.

Also no. Did anyone actually read the article? Same thing happened in NY. ACLU fought it there, and now they're fighting it here too. All of these people still have court cases and trials. If this was Orwellian they would've just shot them in the streets. Its not though, so the best Trump's cronies can do is scare them with a big sentence that will get heavily pared down. Fuck me for not thinking the sky's falling I guess.

Edit: reading Fuchsdh's post, seems they weren't arrested for peaceful protest, they were arrested for smashing shit and fighting cops. I thought it was fishy that he whined about the women's march as ineffective.
You could dig in your heels in response to those calling you out, as it looks like you made your line in sand pretty clearly. Or you could recognize the injustice and very public rhetoric Trump and the GOP have leveled against protesters.

Why don't you burn your belongings in protest of capitalism/taxes/etc then, if it's so pathetic to want to protect the things you own?
