Why buy portable?

DCX

DCX
I'm all for new hardware and gadgets with that said, i'm having a hard time justifying getting either a DS or PSP. Keep in mind i don't want to play 8 year old remades/remakes. I would prefer to play original titles. So why buy portable then? Other than 80% of the games being older console games why shell out 130-250 bucks on hardware that maybe will give you 3-5 titles worth while?

DCX

I sit on the couch and play my DS and PSP as much as I sit on my couch and play my PS2/Xbox/GC. Sadly, its emus mostly on PSP.... and lots of GBA games on DS. But still!

WHY HELLO THAR FIRE EMBLEM. YOU SURE DO ROCK! AND THERE'S EVEN TWO COMPLETELY ORIGINAL GAMES AVAILABLE FOR YOU ON THE GBA! IMAGINE THAT! YOUR COUSINS ADVANCE WARS SAY HI TOO BY THE WAY.

Seriously why am I bothering.

I can't tell you how many times at long lines, Doctors officies, at lunch at work, waiting in the car for someone, or just hanging out I've used my DS or PSP. Moreso the PSP since it can do so many different things.

I sometimes work the late shift monitoring the servers and the PSP is a godsend. I've watched movies, played games, and surfed the web on it. :D

There are some games you'd miss out by not owning a GBA at the very least. Like Fire Emblem, or Advance Wars. Some good 2D lovin' right there. Of course, you could always get a Game Boy Player instead.

I play my GBA/DS more than my consoles because the kind of games produced for portables tend to lean toward my particular tastes.

Well, good portable games are generally $20 cheaper than new non-portable games, and quite often more fun. If you want a decent Castlevania game, you're not going to get in on your television any time soon. Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are well worth owning a GBA or DS for... and if you do pick up a DS, you'll be able to play the first "true" Super Mario Bros. game in years sometime soon.

If you'd rather live with EA fodder, by all means avoid portables.

This man proves my point. I think alot of you play your DS alot, but mostly becuase of your bigger GBA lineup and with the PSP emus rule, or UMD or anything that it does. I have a SP and i can't say that "upgrading" to either of these systems is worth it...Nintendogs is game that really interests me. I think if i end up with a DS, it would be for Nintendogs.

I find myself playing handhelds a hell lot more than consoles right now.

I would have thought portability would have been an obvious selling point. Does that mean that people who buy portables can only play them when they don't have access to a home console? Of course not, that'd be idiotic thinking. The appeal of a portable (in and of itself) is that you can play it anywhere, including the comfort of your own home.

Beyond that there is the games of course, but that's down to individual appeal.

Portables will never be able to appeal to me like home consoles do. Home consoles drive this industry, its the most important segment of this market, at e3 i dont give a damn what 3rd parties and 1st parties have instore for PSP or DS its irrelevent. Its all about the latests announcments on PS2, XBox and GC.

However, its a nice form of gaming to complement home consoles and Pro Evo on the go is what i'ev wanted for a long time. But yeah, most of my attention at the moment is on 360, PS3 and Rev

I believe you can go without a portable for a whole generation without missing out on any significant must have gaming experiences.

Because an awesome game is no less awesome for being on a portable than on a console?

That and the vastly increased 2D:3D games ratio.

This is the only sentence that you need to read in this thread. It's not quoted for truth, it is truth.

seriously?

i like portables since i can just whip out a PSP or GBA, play a few minutes of a game, then go back to whatever i'm doing. it's also great if you spend a lot of time out of your living room and don't have much time to play at home

with Portstation Portable out, I find it more attractive since it's possible to have consoles games ported to a handheld that can play pretty close to console counterparts

Problem being, Advance Wars is the significant must have gaming experience this generation. By far.

Either or. You can throw in Fire Emblem, Ninja Five-O, Metroid Fusion, Advance Gaurdian Heroes, Mario Vs Donkey Kong and a ton others for good measure. :)

I put RE4 ahead of Advance Wars but still AW is a must have game period playing through AWDS reminds just how perfect and awesome the game formula is, it's just perfect.

See...I'm not real big on portables either but you have got to be kidding. Like others have said Fire Emblem and Advance Wars Make this statement 100% invalid.

As I grow older, I find that I am getting more and more impatient with gaming systems. Waiting minutes to load a console up just to play 20 to 30 minutes annoys me when I'm in the mood to just get my gaming fix. Portables let me turn it on, play for 10 to 15 minutes, then shut it off and resume my play later on, with minimal waiting time. Like today at home, I've turned on my DS four times to play (and fail grrrr) AWDS in between watching TV, making food, and browsing the net. Multitasking rules!

If you've got a goddamned SP, why are you questioning the viability of fucking portables?
To be honest, it was a gift...i didn't buy it and where i live i don't have public transportation where a portable gaming system would be a godsend. I have the Pacman Collection, which is great for gaming on the go but i have Super Mario World which isn't. I will also state, SP is the first portable i have ever supported...i own a Neo Geo Pocket just for collectible purposes. DS is interesting with the touch screen but some games uses the screen just because. PSP has the horsepower to deliver great games, but man if the focus of the system changed from games to everything else. Worms is a game i would get. Which platform is the question...

I've seen some assinine question before, but this is up there with "why is the sky blue?"

Ever sat in a doctors office? Ever sat at a red light? Ever visit the in-laws? Ever have a family thanksgiving? Ever play shitacular games on your cell-phone and wish for a better alternative? Ever have someone start speaking to you that you absolutly hate? Ever wait at the DMV? Ever wait for the movie to start? Ever have your wife start nagging you about taking out the trash? Ever lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep? Ever have your power get knocked out and need a flashlight? Ever get so bored with TV that you want to barf your guts out when "reality show#8billion" comes on? Ever go on a long trip in a car filled with complete retards? Ever get stranded on the side of the road when your car breaks down waiting for help?

I have, and you know what?

THANK GOD FOR PORTABLE GAMING.

Ok with this thinking, why not have a full fledge gaming system with enough horse power and features to become a gaming system and not considered " Gameboy esqe" Dreamcast on a chip anyone? Why is the portable market geared towards rehashes and puzzle games? It's still marketed to 5-10 year olds and women. PSP is the first system to try to break that mold and really what they have done is enter the PDA/iPod market.

Long bus rides. My dad has actually started buying me PSP games as an incentive, because I'm saving him something on the order of $50 a month on gas alone, let alone depreciation and insurance...

Red light? Are you kidding? You don't play games on your cell phone for fun, you own a cell phone to make calls. Also for all of those examples you mention you can substitute a CD player, or a book. There are alot better things out there to do than firing up a DS while you're bitching about your nagging wife and taking the garbage out... :lol :lol This post is worse than my question.

Before the Gameboy Advance, I wasn't much interested in portable gaming. It was a fun curiosity and the convenience factor was mucho appealing. But the hardware and most (not all) of the games were too crude compared to even simple console titles.

When GBA dumped 16-bit and better-than-16-bit game experiences in a palmtop... woohoo! The magic gestalt was reached for me. Instantly I began playing portables (GBA) a hell of a lot. I began to realize all the ways in which "big games", i.e. consoles, can be highly inconvenient.

DS and PSP - +1000 from me. Both are awesome for my desires and practical concerns, and PSP has impressed me in terms of having essentially PS2 quality stuff anywhere, anytime. Time trials in Wipeout Pure = every night before falling asleep, in bed.

I'm not sure what you're proposing there. The things that draw me to portable gaming have nothing to do with horse powers or features. Just good solid gameplay that I can play for short spurts but an overall long time without loading. I already said that the console experience requires me to take up the TV in my room, which I'm increasingly not liking because I have it on to watch shows. Looking at my GBA and DS library, I don't think I have any game that fits your mold of rehashes and puzzle games (well I have Meteos, but that is by no means a rehash). Just because the portable market has a large proportion of filler trash (not unlike the console market) doesn't mean that I would buy that stuff.

BUY FIRE EMBLEM AND ADVANCE WARS. STOP COMPLAINING. FIRE EMBLEM AND WARS MAKES YOUR "ARGUMENT" NULL AND VOID.

I rarely play my portable outside of my house. Advance Wars, in particular, is a perfect "in between pitches" game when I laze around and watch baseball. Like others, my taste has been well-represented on the GBA and DS. Before I sold my PS2 and Xbox they gathered dust 99% of the time, while my GBA/SP/DS has been used almost every day for years.

My thing with remakes is this. Why give me Mario 1-8, and not a brand new 2D Mario? Why A Link To the Past and not a new Zelda game based on that engine? F-Zero etc....everything is an enhanced port and it leaves you wishes for a new game. Other than laziness why not give us new games.

well a new 2d mario is finally coming and there have been many Gameboy zeldas including the recent Minish Cap, so that kinda fucks your argument

Sega finally gave gamers a good game with Saga, wasn't there a three part RPG also that seemed to little to late?

Thanks for telling me why I purchased my cell-phone, and explaining to me how to use it.

The point of my post is that great enjoyment can be had from a handheld game, during these various instances. Wether or not you recognize that, is your loss.

It's your opinion that there are better things to do. I love my handheld, and guess what? I save my reading for rainy days.

I'm not saying that there isn't any enjoyment to be had from portables, it's the game lineups that bug me. It's the same arguemnt that can be said for Arcades these days. Why go if you can play and have better at home? Well, it's about offering things you CAN'T do at home. Police 911, Mo-Cap Boxing, that fire fighter game...etc.

Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Advance WARS, Advance WARS 2: Black Hole Rising is GBA.

The recently released Advance WARS: Dual Strike is for DS.

All of these games are "fully realised" titles. You're complaining about "complete games" on a portable. I JUST LISTED THEM FOR YOU. Your "point" is moot.

There is plenty more, but Christ on a motherfucking stick you just want to keep whinging about it.

what about stylus gaming and motion-sensor? That's something that's unique to a handheld. You can't play wario ware twisted or kirby canvas curse on consoles. I'm just giving examples, you can say those games suck but they dont.

Stylus gaming CAN be cool...if used right. The motion sensor is cool, i must admit, would be cool if DS had a new Moneky Ball Game. Wi-Fi multiplayer and you have yourself a new DS owner :D

Hark, there is Metroid Fusion, Donkey Kong: King of Swing, and shit, even Scurge Hive. I'm just randomly picking from the large assortment of original titles. Oh, why hello Kirby: Canvas Curse. I see you brought your friend Yoshi's Touch & Go, Wario Ware Twisted, Meteos. as well as Nintendogs.

See what you started? We can all join in.

You're whinging about a "problem" with portable games that clearly does not exist, and then ignore the facts and continue complaining when you're shown that it's wrong. That would be trolling.

In addition the three Fzero games for GBA are brand new, not ports or remakes. OH TEH NOES.
