Why do you wear the mask?

Please don't turn this into a mask shitfight.
I'm genuinely interested in the personal reason why people wear them.

Mods, sorry if this poll or thread is against the rules. I legitimately checked the covid threads for any rules around mask discussion and couldn't see anything.
If this is no good, or it gets out of hand, please lock it.
Doh! Please move to off-topic if possible...

Before myself and my family and friends were double jabbed, it was a very low effort way to decrease the chance of any of us getting ill. I had a renewed motivation when people I know that are my age (early 30s) got stuck with long covid and ended up in hospital with it. Definitely didn’t want that for me or mine.

I dont wear them now as they are. It mandated here anymore but if some asked me to wear one when in their store or house I would out of respect.

I did wear them to help do my part and because they were mandated.

If the numbers jumped here again I'd voluntarily wear one again too.

I have gotten both shots.

Shouldn't this be in off topic also?

I'm vaccinated but still wear a mask because COVID has risen here exponentially (Orlando, FL) and I know a vaccinated person locally who has had a severe illness due to the Delta variant.

I kind of wear it more for the anonymity than its actual designed function.

It's like a jacket I use it when I think it's necessary. And take it off if it's uncomfortable.

I only wear masks if Im forced to by a store. Im vaxxed too.

Every country and city is different, but it better get to a point wear masks are not required anymore when the infection rate drops to a certain number. It doesn't make sense to keep doing it if almost everyone is vaxxed and the only people left are people who dont want to get vaxxed.

Thats on them. If 10% of the people dont want to get vaxxed, the other 90% who are shouldnt need to wear masks forever to cover your ass.

Think of it like car insurance. Its the law and most people get it. But for the ones who dont and want to risk it never getting into a crash, thats on them. It shouldnt hold up the insured people from driving and it doesn't.

Mask wearing doesn't even make sense anyway. So kids at school have to wear masks in the hallway, but in class when they are bunched up in a room, masks come off. Fans have to wear masks in the snack bar area of a stadium. But when they get to their seats sitting among fans like sardines in tight seats, mask can come off. Retarded.

I only wear them in the stores, because I don't want to waste time with security or the store employees (even if more and more of them don't give a crap about them). I've stopped wearing them outside even when they were still mandatory and fortunately the cops in my city pretended like they didn't see it.

Its got to a point security doesnt give a shit. They know it too. They are like everyone else and had it.

I was at the Jays game and youre supposed to wear masks in the snack bar hallways, but some reason can take them off at your crowded seat. How does that make sense?

Half the people didnt have their masks on buying food or walking around the concourse level. No stadium employees gave a shit. We did it ourselves standing at the railings (when we were too tired and squooshed in the seats). The staff guy standing at each aisle didnt give a shit. And no other workers seeing anyone do it cared either.

In the beginning, happy to play along and I look awesome in a bandana/shemog. As time wore on, they were shown to be less and less effective than they thought…. Then I got vaccinated.

So now, no.

Because it's mandatory around here and it's not really that big of an inconvenience.
I also work in direct contact with my customers, so if wearing a mask makes some of them feel more comfortable than that's a good enough reason for now.

Honestly, even before the pandemic, I wore masks to prevent transmitting germs and to protect the people around me. The same reason for now except it is also mandatory.
I kinda wish that healthy people can be mask-free outdoors. But, hey, I’m no expert in that regard.

If thats the case, you'll be wearing a mask forever because many people dont want to be vaxxed. So if you want to ensure their safety, you'll have to wear a mask all the time for the rest of your life.

cause it helps prevent transmission and not only are you protecting yourself but others.

i don't have time for people who are too paranoid or think that their fucking human rights are being broken. all that is asked of you is that you wear a piece of cloth over your mouth/nose. yes you can breathe with it on. i have asthma and need inhalers/steroids to help me breathe. a piece of cloth doesn't make it any worse.

if you're in a situation where it's mandatory just put it on and stop your bitching. get your vaccine too! that's way more important. i know that's optional but seriously unless you're advised not to get it for health reasons (from a doctor and not karen on facebook) then you really should get it. i hope to see more "not vaccinated = no entry" or even better "no vaccine = no job". people who straight up refuse to get it are simply not educated well enough or are tinfoil hat paranoid. if that's you then i don't want anything to do with you. you think covid is fake or a conspiracy then i'd love to see you work at my job. you try working in a hospital ward and watch people die and not even get to say goodbye to their family (maybe through a window or a phone/zoom call).

where i am masks are only required in enclosed public spaces but even then i will still wear mine to help protect myself/others.

You said a mask can't be worn safely outside of a controlled, sterile environment. I'd love to see the microbiological evidence of this.

Well if you;
- wash your hands for 20 seconds or more with soap or hand gel
- dry your hands with a unused towel or paper towel
- throw said towel away
- pull out your sterile baggy containing you new unused n95 mask
- remove your n95 mask from your baggy, touching only by the ear loops,
- Place the mask over your face and over your ears
- Do your shopping without touching your mask at all
- pay for your goods
- Leave store
- Remove mask, place in the baggy, dispose of in a biohazard bin - masks are single use only!
- wash hands thoroughly with soap or hand gel

Then you might be fine, but if you

- pull out the same mask you've been wearing for weeks between washes, from your arse pocket, that you've been farting through all day
- Put it over your face, adjust it
- Go do your shopping
- Pull mask down for a gulp of air, several times
- pay for your good, handing your contaminated cash from your contaminated hand to the cashier, contaminating their hands..
- Leave the store, take off your mask and shove it back in your arse pocket and fart.

Then you are wasting your time.

Which one are you ??

Also - Masks do not protect you as a wearer.

While I kinda agree with this in theory, in practice it's different. I've been guilty of using my masks like a barbarian, doing pretty much everything you've described, and I know a lot of people who've done the same. We do however wear the masks religiously in all public places ever since they became mandatory, and none of us had a cold or any other kind of respiratory illness in the last year and a half, so the mitigation clearly is working to some degree. By now we're all also double vaccinated, but that's besides the point.

I will continue to wear the masks for as long as they are needed, and probably continue to do so during normal flu/cold seasons. They don't bother me even a little bit.

Because there are people around me who have compromised immune systems, or other reasons why they cannot be vaccinated, so I'm happy to put on a mask if it might help protect them a little more.

This is because putting a mask on is incredibly easy, simple, completely safe, reasonable, and causes me no issues whatsoever. If anything, they're a great way to avoid all sorts of other infections other than just covid.

EDIT: only two Bane related gags so far in this thread?

LAZY, Gaf. VERY LAZY.

My fantasy is that my girlfriend was actually a young high school girl.
I wear them mostly for other people's peace of mind. I'm vaccinated, but my gf isn't so I don't want to catch covid and spread it to her. But I am of the belief that the mask is better at reducing me spreading covid to other people than catching covid from them. But if we all do it then I guess it does help stop me getting covid.

Not vaccinated, so it's to protect myself and others around me. We also have mask mandates here, but I'll still wear it after getting vaccinated. I started wearing a mask daily in Bangkok before the pandemic, and it was due to poor air quality. Now, I live in a beach town with clean air, but I'm so used to wearing it all the time, that I'll keep it up. Plus, it will help others to feel comfortable when I'm around them, as no one is going to know if I'm vaccinated or not.

There's a shortage of vaccines, so we still have no idea when we can get a shot, much less 2. Thailand handled the pandemic so well last year, but since they started opening back up this year, it's been an absolute shitshow. 20,000 new cases today. That's massive, given the population, and the fact that we've had rolling lockdowns throughout the year.

The lack of non-COVID ailments has definitely been noticeable. Used to be guaranteed a bout or 2 with the flu each year. There's just less transmission of diseases period, when everyone is wearing a mask. Really underrated benefit.

I only wore a mask when it was required. Since I'm fully vaccinated and no place I go requires one anymore, I haven't worn a mask in about two months (and very few people I see wear one either).

I'm fully vaccinated and here in Canada masks are not mandatory but I still wear one whenever I go into any store to mainly prevent any spreading and even though you can be vaxxed you can still get it just not as bad. I honestly don't see the issue wearing one to go into a store or something like that it won't hurt you to wear one for 10-20 minutes if it helps possibly prevent spread. The virus is no joke and the only way it's gonna eventually end is if everyone prevent spreading as much as possible.

Because the business I need to go in requires it. I've had the moderna shots, and I'm pretty sure I've had the covid at least once, maybe twice.

Regulations mandating the use of masks indoors. Before it was easy, you were wearing them all the time everywhere. Now it’s a pain - go out, take them off, you go into the building, you put them back on, etc.

I wanted to enter banks masked without a fuzz, now they force me to wear masks to get in, and they are expected to. Totally dominated and following my desires, by sheer synchronicity they are made to obey and grant my wish. Totally worth it.

This is the nature of physical law, that governs human nature and behavior, humans cannot disobey physical law. If FATE, superdeterminism, dictates something is to happen, it will happen no choice no vote no argument can stop.

I wear it because wearing masks is normal in Japan.

This is one of the things that kills me when I read so much about people moaning about their freedoms, and how mask wearing is some sort of assault on democracy. If any of these people ever ventured out of their own country, and their own heads, they'd see that very many free societies regularly wear masks for a variety of reasons, and have done for many years. Eminently sensible in a world full of pollutants and infectious disease. I'm going to use covid as a good starting point to wearing a mask in environments where I'd generally like to avoid inhaling unpleasant stuff.

Locally I've heard of at least two deaths from covid of vaccinated people and one hospitalized for severe complications. They may protect, but it seems some can still get it and get severe complications or die from it. High vitamin D probably still needed to help against complications

we need expensive battery powered ones with proper filtration in and out. Also replaceable high end filters

Mostly just because it was required and because I got used to it. I think I wore a mask everywhere for like a month after I got the vaccine simply because it felt weird not wearing one.
I wear it because wearing masks is normal in Japan.
I also really liked wearing a mask when I was in Japan since I felt like everyone was staring at me since I was a foreigner.
