Why does Zack Snyder Keep getting work?

This is more or less it. If nothing else, he makes superheroes look and move like motherfucking superheroes. Unfortunately, he can't make them feel like superheroes.

If only there were a medium not so dependent on story that allowed for visuals and movement.

An interactive form of entertainment where such an auteur could express themselves with hour upon hour of excess.

I didn't see BvS yet, but I think Man of Steel was a much better movie than GotG, Avengers 2, AntMan, and many of the Marvel stuff, vastly overrated minus some stuff like Iron Man 1 and Winter Soldier.

And Watchmen was phenomenal, even if flawed in many aspects.

On top of this, if he is easy to work with and his movies are profitable, you bet he will still getting work.

Has had more flops than successes.

I thought 300 was a great movie, but the sequel was pretty terrible. I wonder if that's because I was notably older when I first watched the sequel, or if I'm right in thinking that the sequel had far worse pacing, a less interestingly told story, and a generally poorer use of 300-style visual effects.

Haven't seen anything else Snyder's directed save Sucker Punch, which I thought was a fun ride despite being incoherent.

Fake edit: Oh, Snyder only produced the second 300. That probably explains why it feels like somebody else was trying to emulate Snyder's work on 300 and failed.

He wouldn't have. Let Nolan have the creative freedom to do anything he's passionate about and expand his resume and hopefully bring home an Oscar.

I'm not talking about directing all movies, but it would be nice to have a supervisor who has a good vision that fans love. I know Nolan probably wouldn't be interested, but who knows. He has a good relationship with Warner Brothers.

I don't care that he continues to get work. Hollywood is full of middling directors -- whatever. Just keep him the hell way from future DC projects. Jesus.

I liked one third of his movies, hated one third and am indifferent about a third.
Loved Dawn Of The Dead, Watchmen, hated Sucker Punch and 300, didn't care about Man Of Steel and the Owl movie.

Personally, Watchmen is the only Snyder movie I like. I actually like it a lot, probably due to the strong source material. A lot of the imagery in there is also honestly fantastic and memorable, in ways that Man of Steel and BvS just fucking aren't. I feel like visually those two movies really missed the mark for me. Snyder even forgot how to craft good action set pieces in BvS. That car chase scene is the absolute worst.

Dawn of the Dead is eh. 300 is meh. Gahoole is totally okay. And parts of Man of Steel are enjoyable in a brainless sort of way.

Suckerpunch though. Suckerpunch stands as the worst movie I've seen in a movie theater. I had free tickets, so I can't say that it's the worst movie I actually paid for. I'll give it that.

He's a better Michael bay. And after watching watchmen and man of steel, I really feel that he would be a great director if he had a good script and a better, more involved producer. He directs action scenes amazingly well, and visually, his movies are unique.

no he hasn't. Only 2 of his 6 movies (not counting BvS since it just opened) have been disappointments at the box office.

Depends how you look at it, 3 of his 6 movies were commercial flops (Guardians, Sucker Punch and Watchmen) and only 300 was a big commercial hit. Man of Steel did fine considering the very very high budget.
How can anyone say that his movies are profitable if you look at those numbers.

Because he is a visual genius.

Plus he's got links in Hollywood.

That was a really good one VenomBoss you really had me there for a second.

Well because is great at visuals, the guy clearly has talent, the only problem is he need a producer and a good writer that can steer him and tame that talent

People keep saying he's great at visuals and action scenes but the only visual I can remember from BvS is red lighting being thrown on screen constantly.

He's always kind of overdone them.

He needs to dial shit down.

There's a masturbatory level of sheen and gritty micromanaged details on all of his vfx.

I've never seen a Zack Snyder movie I didn't enjoy.

300, Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, and Man of Steel were all pretty fun popcorn flicks.

Haven't seen Batman vs Superman yet though.

This might surprise some people, but a Director's value isn't necessarily in making big box office movies or critical darlings. Very few directors have the experience with large budget movies that have a lot of CGI, and complex production pipelines. You might not love his movies but producing, scheduling, relationships with actors, delivering movies, etc are important skill-sets when it comes to directing.

I can't stand most of Snyder's films, dawn of the dead is the only one I liked really, but the hate hes getting is starting to get over the top. He didn't kill anybody. I actually feel sorry for him and I've slagged him off in BvS threads.

How can you say they aren't unless you are a WB shareholder? Guardians made almost double its budget. Obviously we aren't privy to details, but the point stands just his resume isn't any worse than a lot of high profile directors in Hollywood. Plenty of them have had box office flops or disappointments and still got work. You studios aren't returning calls from Ridley Scott because Exodus didn't perform? The premise of this thread is dumb. It's not hard to figure out how he still gets work.

I dont think Warner Bros know what they are doing. They dont have anyone else, they have no plan, without Snyder they have nothing.

Because we know the exact number the box office did and it's also easy to forget that only 45 to 60% of the box office goes to the studio and marketing deals are almost never included in the budget.
I never said he isn't going to get any work after a few flops or something like that, but if someone says his movies are profitable, that simple isn't true. He has had 3 flops of 6 movies and only 1 movie is a real commercial hit and 2 did fine.
Off course we don't know the exact numbers, but even if Guardians managed to break-even or made a little profit out of streaming services and blu-ray, that doesn't change that much.

I'd say it's been really tame in his DC movies (don't even remember any slow mo in Man of steel)

It didn't have any. He purposefully went for a handheld, "cinema verite" style. For reasons. I think that was a mistake for a mythic, massive character like Superman.

it felt excessive in BvS.
especially when wonder woman joined the fight

Really, I thought outside of the opening titles it was pretty restrained. Nothing like 300 or Watchmen.

Sucker Punch extended cut is easily his best movie.

After seeing some of the scenes in the extended cut version of Sucker Punch I think he might be pretty good at doing a "Chicago" style musical film. I actually kind of liked the "Love is the Drug" musical number in Sucker Punch, even though it didn't really fit the character or movie.

If it managed to break even or make a little profit it's not a flop.

I liked Watchmen a lot

I think his style lends itself really well to comic book movies. But he does seem to be getting worse as time goes on

I think Watchmen is his best work. His style definitely fits comics, but it looks like the scripts he's been getting since Watchmen have been downhill running.

Because he makes good movies? I know there is this thing on GAF right now to really hate on him but I personally love every single movie he's made. If there is a movie in the future that has his name on it, I'll be there day 1 watching it in the cinema.

That scene is just fun, but I get why it was removed. Everything else that was cut only serves to make the movie more coherent (and it's still a giant mess).

I didn't really care for BvS, but I'm kind of dying to see the director's cut. I wouldn't be surprised if key elements of the plot were removed that could have made it better movie.

White straight male keeps getting job no matter what, news at 11. Meanwhile, black and female directors get into directing jail if they have even the smallest of flops.
