Why doesn't Sega make Shenmue 3?

If I had a nickel for everytime somebody told me Yakuza was like Shenmue...

Suzuki had a great idea, but I think it was probably a little too early for its time. If it would have came out maybe around the middle of the Ps2's life I think it would have had more of a chance.

Being on a system that financially tanked however just doomed it from the start.

The series was incredibly expensive to make, overpromised and subsequently underdelivered on features, and also underperformed in sales. There's no real mystery as to why the series was abandoned even though it did achieve a cult following.

Shenmue under delivered? Did you play it? Honestly?

It lived up to the hype is all Im saying.

Yakuza is like Shenmue 1 because they both take place in Japan and have a few other vague similarities.

That's about it.

I think we should merge this thread with the Jet Set Wii thread, so we can keep all of our Sega doesn't love us talk consolidated.

It really didn't. Whether or not it succeeded as being a fun game is for the user to decide, but the game was supposed to be an epic blending of RPG, fighting, and adventure game mechanics. I liked it, but the first one especially was disappointing as it was clear they were scaling it back quite a bit, confining it to a relatively small area. It was also bogged down with silly plot points (the search for sailors notoriously among them), a lack of progression, and repetitive tasks like having a job as a fork-lift operator. Also, the fighting bits could easily be accomplished with button-mashing.

At the end of the day, I still liked it, but it fell significantly short of its epic ambitions.

a new Shenmue game would be great. it would also be nice if they rereleased the first two games with the ORIGINAL languages along with the new game. people can catch up that way. btw, the English dub was just horrible...

Or they could redub it competently if they were serious about it. For all the reasons you can conjure up for the financial failure of Shenmue, the solution certainly doesn't include "should be subtitled."

very true, they could pump some money into some voice talent for a rerelease. although an optional language option would be nice. the Japanese voices are fantastic.

Shenmue is classic

I have an extra copy of part 1 on DC and 2 on Xbox still in the plastic.

Hey mista wanna rassle?

Oh snap, Shenmue 3 is so going to happen now, look at this brilliant plan:

Mass Mailing SEGA!!! Shenmue!!! said:
The date is almost here, and i've received many replies from all the fans ready to start mailing. Get those toy capsules ready!!! The official start date is Nov. 27th (Dreamcast's Anniversary) all the way thru Dec. 29th (Shenmue's Anniversary). Now I know some will be celebrating the holidays that weekend, but we have a full month for you to do your mailing. I can't wait to see if we finally get a reply out of Sega :)

I am asking all the fans that are able, to participate in this event. The main idea is that all of us that can will be sending in as many Toy Capsules as we can to SoJ (like the ones you buy in the game).
This style of mass mailing was used by fans of the Tv show Jericho. They sent bags of peanuts to the network and succeeded in getting their show put back on the air!

Now being that many of us will be mailing over seas the Toy packs can get a little pricey, a pack of 1lb of capsules from California is about $20. So if all you can send is a letter, that will be good also. For those who do not want to be bothered with doing the mailing yourself, I have set up a Paypal donation button on the main page, and I will personally take care of the mailing. It will be your choice if you want empty capsules with "shenmue" notes in them, or ones with actual toys. You can decide how many capsules too, if you want to send 3 little ones you bought real quick from the capsule machines at walmart, Cool! If you want to send a full box you ordered from Ebay, even better. Or if you just want to click the donate button on the front on the myspace page, thats fine too....

The actual dates we would like to start the mailing is Nov. 27th (Dreamcast's anniversary) and end on Dec. 29th (Shenmue's 9th anniversary). Please include a letter asking for the continuation of the Shenmue series with your toy capsules, and poster printed from the Shenmue Poster Project. If you are only sending a letter, please include a poster with yours as well. Please be polite in you letters as you will be representing the entire Shenmue fan base :) Also, please take pictures of the packages you are sending and email them to ShenmueAm2@gmail.com

For those who would like to check how much it would cost to mail from their Country/city, Check at your local post office, fedex, or UPS store. Here is Sega of Japan's address:

SEGA CORPORATION
1-2-12 Haneda
Ohta-ku
Tokyo 144-8531
Japan

You may send an additional pack to Yu Suzuki at the same address:

Yu Suzuki
AM Plus R&D Division
SEGA Corporation
1-2-12 Haneda,
Ohta-ku, Tokyo 144-8531
JAPAN

With this fail proof plan in motion (it worked for Jericho!), we'll finally get to see the conclusion of this story. On a related note, if that address is correct, it's good to know that the dungeon Yu Suzuki is kept in has access to outside mail.

The problem is that you can't release Shenmue III and expect profit, in order to make this franchise profitable Sega needs IMHO to relaunch the saga from the episode 1.

The end of Shenmue 2 had a
floating
fucking
sword
.

I don't want to play Shenmue 3 and find out how they explain that mystical gobbledygook.

Jump the shark moment right there.

Another week another Shenmue thread.

As great as the first 2 games were, apparently..
-#1 bombed
-#2 bombed
Heck, #2 got released in the US because Microsoft paid for it, after many fans asked for it..and still bombed..so of course they are going to take their time.
2 was going to be the last major Dreamcast release in NA, until Microsoft paid for it to become an Xbox exclusive.

Many people imported it from Europe to the point that some news site claimed that Shenmue II for DC was the most imported game of the story on the United States.

The amount of money they would need to pour into it for it to live up to hype would be too large and still wouldn't sell.

Sega are doing ok right now, I think they like that.

Yakuza doesn't have Gashapon machines, forklifts, arcade games, dojo and Ine-san who gives me 500 yen everyday.

what about a game a of lucky hit?

edit: holy shit. old thread is old

The day Shenmue 3 gets released is the day I can die a happy man. Well, I think so. Shenmue 3 wouldn't finish the story anyway. It would have to at least finish at Shenmue 4 :(

God.

SEGA, why do you hate us :(

They could take the Yakuza 3 engine or just use the Shenmue II Xbox engine and port it to Wii or something. From what I understand, Shenmue III was underway at some point.

They did the same thing with Skies II. Was gonna get a sequel in 2003/2004. Then the PS2 was too hard to port over to and the GC version didn't sell well. Then supposedly development started up again two years ago, but half the team went to work on Valkyria Chronicles and Rieko Kodama and the rest went to work on Seventh Dragon.

The Sega who made Shenmue are dead. The Dreamcast killed them. They were crushed by their own magnificence.

As the company entered its death throes, it suffered the indignity of passing intestinal gas. As the company finally died, the gas developed into a form of sentience, and ripped Sega's skin from its decaying flesh. This fart, a testament to all that is mediocre, all that strives to be average, still exists to this day, clothed in the skin of a dead giant, releasing hollow, soulless, failed remakes and sequels of former glories.

Shenmue must not now, not ever, be used as so many others have. We love it enough, to let it go...

Shenmue was expensive, Shenmue took forever to make, and for the mainstream, Shenmue was extremely boring.

Shenmue's extreme immersion comes at a price: tedium. While making you do the most mundane shit is a great way to immerse a gamer in your world, I know a lot of people who saw the game as mindbogglingly lacking in the fun department. Asking EVERYBODY, waiting around for appointments, getting lost in massive cities (and not in the good way), doing stuff like having to get a job in the game... too tedious for most people.

It's also been at least five or six years since Shenmue 2 came out on the Xbox, and closer to seven since it was on Dreamcast. You know the saying, "strike while the iron is hot"? Shenmue's iron is stone cold by this point, and has been for a very long time.

Also, Yu Suzuki did not leave Sega. That was a misquote from Simon Jeffrey which he quickly cleared up.

I haaaaaaaaaated Shenmue. Shenmue II, however, fixed all (or at least most) of those problems (which allowed me to truly play at my leisure). Shenmue II basically turns Shenmue I into a fucking tutorial by comparison, especially with the greater emphasis on fighting and the improved QTEs.

I just can't understand anyone who likes Shenmue II but not 1, sorry. I mean, I think II is better but it's not like they're THAT different.

Shenmue II removed a lot of the problems from the first game. Want to go somewhere? Someone will walk you there. Don't want to watch them walk you there? You can skip it until you arrive there. Got an appointment? You can fast-forward the clock. Wanna work? Go ahead. You're not being forced to do it.

And then the actual game felt like an adventure. In Shenmue, Ryo was basically going around the neighborhood asking old ladies if they knew the guy that killed his dad. In Shenmue II, he's in a place he's never been, he's meeting people who he's never seen before (like Ren, who is probably the best character in the series), and he's just well, doing more than he ever did in Shenmue I. There are more fights, more QTEs (not that I particularly love those), and it just felt more fully-realized than Shenmue I. It probably doesn't hurt that I played the Euro DC version, which meant I didn't have to listen to the godawful American voices. Also, the game has the best fight in the series (Don Niu) and ends on a pretty fucking crazy note (after all the realistic stuff).

It's just... better.
